The long-anticipated Convoy hybrid cargo bike trailer and e-bike conversion system finally looks set to launch this summer.

The Convoy CO.1 is an already German Design Award-winning idea that converts any bicycle into a cargo bike, or at least a bike with a cargo trailer, where inside the trailing wheel is a pedal-assist system. The system attaches tool-free via patent-pending twin locking axle clamps.

The reasons for doing things this way are quite appealing and, unlike many other kits, the modification remains a separate entity, so you’re theoretically less likely to void any original warranties on your bike. This is a notable downside to 99% of the e-bike conversion kits on the market, whereby direct modification is not part of the original equipment maker’s terms of use. Thus, very often, a motor modification means invalidating the original bike’s warranty.

Of course, the major upside is that the 14kg Convoy device is designed to carry up to 50kg of cargo, so in gaining an adaptable trailer, you can fit all manner of accessories to cater for carrying the weekly shop, among other things. Convoy says that the 520mm long rack system would even host a pair of child seats.

The Convoy is designed to be universally compatible with all bicycles from a 26-inch wheel through to a 29-inch. The capability of the Convoy is not limited to cargo carriage either; it also features a bright rear light, plus a digital app companion that lets you register the device as yours, then activate a digital lock within the motor for added security when you are away from the bike.

From the built-in 357Wh battery, you can achieve a 30km assisted range, with power delivered across three assist settings. Convoy says that it has a patent-pending active rear wheel steering that reduces wobble, ensuring predictable handling.

For those who prefer not to have a pedal-assist, but still love the trailer design, Convoy will also bring to market the simplified CO.3 standard hub model.

The Convoy CO.1 e-bike conversion is expected to retail at £1,999 or €2,299.
