Mercedes-AMG has doubled down on its electric future with fresh details about a high-performance electric SUV lineup, including a dramatic coupe-style variant.
The confirmation came last week in comments to Autocar, as the performance brand reinforced its belief that electric SUVs with extreme power still have a strong global audience.
The move comes as SUVs continue to dominate Mercedes-Benz sales worldwide and as AMG prepares its most ambitious EV program yet, targeting a 2027 launch window.
AMG commits to electric SUVs with extreme power
SUVs now make up more than half of the company’s global sales volume, and AMG sees no reason to step away from that momentum. Instead, the brand plans to push deeper into the segment with fully electric models designed from the ground up for performance.
According to Autocar, the upcoming AMG electric SUV is expected to deliver power outputs in the four-figure range, placing it among the most powerful road-going SUVs ever developed.
AMG has already been spotted testing a bespoke electric SUV, signaling that development is well underway. This will not be a lightly modified Mercedes EV. It will be built on the dedicated AMG.EA platform, engineered specifically for high-performance electric vehicles carrying the AMG badge.
The platform is intended to support high output, rapid charging, and repeatable performance, all key expectations from AMG customers.
Coupe-style variant confirmed as third EV model
Alongside the standard SUV, the luxury car company will also introduce a coupe-shaped version as the third model in its electric lineup. AMG CEO Michael Schiebe confirmed the plan, stating the brand “will double down on SUVs”.
The decision reflects customer demand and mirrors AMG’s existing strategy in its gasoline lineup, where the GLE 63 S is offered in both standard SUV and coupe forms.
The electric SUV coupe is expected to be unveiled in the second half of 2027. It will sit alongside a Porsche Cayenne-sized electric SUV due earlier, and a production version of the GT XX concept.
Together, these vehicles will form the core of AMG’s first dedicated EV family, aimed at buyers who want electric performance without sacrificing size or presence.
Shared platform and tri-motor electric drivetrain
All of these upcoming AMG EVs will ride on the same AMG.EA platform. The electric SUV and its coupe sibling will share technology with the production version of the GT XX concept, which is set to debut later this year as a replacement for the current GT 4-Door Coupe and as AMG’s first fully electric car.
Power will come from a tri-motor setup, with one motor driving the front axle and two motors mounted at the rear. The system will use cylindrical battery cells with direct cooling and an 800-volt electrical architecture designed for fast charging and sustained high performance.
In the GT XX prototype, this configuration produced up to 1,341 horsepower. While the SUV versions may not match that exact figure, AMG is clearly targeting output levels far beyond typical electric SUVs.
New leadership as AMG enters critical EV phase
The announcement of the electric SUV coupe comes during a leadership transition at Mercedes-AMG. Michael Schiebe, who has led the brand since March 2023, is set to take over as head of Mercedes-Benz’s Top End Vehicle Group.
That division oversees high-end models, including Mercedes-Maybach and the G-Class. Schiebe will be succeeded by Stefan Weckbach, who assumes the role on July 1.
Despite the change, AMG’s direction appears firmly set. With electric vehicles showing no signs of disappearing and SUVs continuing to dominate global demand, Mercedes-AMG is positioning itself to lead the high-performance electric SUV segment.
