A teenage rider has been seriously injured following a collision involving an electric motorcycle in Melbourne’s inner west.

Police say the crash occurred about 1:55pm on Monday, 9 February, in Altona North, when a 17-year-old unlicensed rider collided with a vehicle that was turning in front of him.

It is alleged the teenager was overtaking stationary traffic on the left at the time of the crash.

The rider was fully ejected from the electric motorcycle and sustained serious injuries, including two suspected broken legs and a dislocated shoulder. He was treated by emergency services at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Westgate Highway Patrol attended the collision and later established that the teenager had been cautioned the previous evening for riding the same electric motorcycle on public roads.

Police have issued a reminder to the community that electric vehicles exceeding certain specifications are classified as motorcycles under Victorian road laws and must comply with registration and licensing requirements.

Members of the public are urged to check current regulations before purchasing or operating electric bikes or electric motorcycles on public roads.

The rider will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
