Boynton Beach, FL., February 7, 2026—The Boynton Beach Police Department proposed an E-Bike ordinance at the Boynton Beach City Commission meeting on February 3. The proposed ordinance addresses the use of e-bikes on sidewalks, drawing from ordinances in Key West and Jupiter. The ordinance aims to keep e-bikes off sidewalks and only allow their use on roadways and bike lanes. There is a great potential for lawsuits due to accidents involving e-bikes on sidewalks. Furthermore, riders of e-bikes need to be educated regarding putting lights on their bikes and wearing helmets to avoid potential accidents.
The proposed ordinance is for safety reasons and will allow pedestrians to freely walk on the sidewalks without the fear of a motorized bike colliding into them. Some people travel at high rates of speed on E-bikes. Plus, the use of E-bikes is increasing so to avoid potential accidents, a proposed ordinance makes sense. E-bikes are generally limited to going 28 mph and anything going over that is not considered an E-bike. Some of these bikes weigh as much as 70 pounds. So , they can cause considerable damage if they hit a pedestrian on the sidewalk.
The commission will decide in the future what to do if the proposed E-bike ordinance is moved forward.
