The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is the same RAV4 Prime as last year, but now with a new name. It features a larger battery than the RAV4 Hybrid and allows you to drive about 42 miles using electric-only power. After the power battery runs out, it switches over to driving like a regular gas-powered hybrid vehicle. For those with short commutes and the ability to frequently charge up the battery, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid can make a lot of sense.

See All PHEV InsightsEdmunds spotlight: Power doesn’t always equal performance
When the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid arrived in 2021 (as the RAV4 Prime), Toyota made a big deal about its power and acceleration. With 302 horsepower and an estimated 0-60 mph time of only 5.7 seconds, it was the quickest vehicle in Toyota’s stable aside from the GR Supra sport coupe. While there’s something to be said for confident acceleration, it’s only a part of the performance recipe and the RAV4 Plug-in tends to come up short elsewhere. Handling is the biggest drawback, with noticeable body roll in moderate cornering and overly sensitive driver aids that tend to diminish confidence and sure-footedness. You can read our test team’s Expert Rating below for more information.
Competitors to consider
If you’re shopping for a plug-in hybrid SUV, we also suggest you check out the Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid and Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid. While their electric-only range estimates are shorter than the plug-in RAV4’s, they do have roomy interiors and lower starting prices. You might also consider the Toyota Prius Prime. Yes, it’s not a SUV but it is considerably less expensive and gets even better fuel economy.
We drove the 2025 Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
How does the Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid drive? The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid gets up to speed much better than its standard or hybrid siblings. In Edmunds’ testing, it reached 60 mph in an impressively quick 5.9 seconds. The regular RAV4, for example, needs a comparatively unhurried 8.9 seconds. The RAV4 Plug-in is also smooth and easy to drive in typical commuting conditions, with a comfortable yet composed ride.
Unfortunately, Toyota failed to back up the muscular powertrain with any sort of dynamic athleticism. Handling is pretty abysmal, with prevalent body roll and vague steering that makes it hard to feel truly confident when making emergency maneuvers. Another demerit comes from the brakes. The RAV4 Plug-in’s pedal feel is overly soft. Panic-stopping performance in our testing was below average for a small SUV.
Visibility is very good, though there are no advanced camera systems to help you out. The RAV4 comes standard with the expected driver assistance technologies and they are well executed, though newer systems (including those in the upcoming 2026 RAV4) perform better.

View interior photosHow comfortable is the Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid? The RAV4’s back seat can accommodate a tall passenger behind a tall driver, with plenty of headroom, lots of toe room and a welcome recline feature. Fitting a car seat is easy in terms of space and LATCH positioning; you’ll find the lower and upper anchors easy to locate and attach to. There’s enough space for forward-facing seats, but the front passenger may need to scoot the seat up to allow for a rear-facing infant seat.
The driver’s seat has enough adjustments to allow you to easily find a comfortable seating position, but the front passenger seat has fewer adjustments, which might lead to a few complaints on long trips. The available synthetic leather upholstery (Toyota’s SofTex) breathes well and is helped on hot days by the available seat ventilation. The rear seats are also praiseworthy for the better-than-average thigh support.
Road and wind noise is abated to pleasant levels, though the gasoline engine sounds unrefined when you’re aggressively accelerating. Otherwise, it’s pleasantly muted.
In terms of controls, the RAV4’s physical climate controls couldn’t be easier to use, and other basic functions are all easy to find and operate.

How’s the tech? The SE trim comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen and the XSE gets a 10.5-inch unit. Both effectively run the same easy-to-use infotainment interface that’s shared with most other Toyotas. The touchscreen is responsive. Inputting a destination in the available navigation system can be done with a digital keyboard or using voice commands. The maps are clear too. Controls for the radio and other settings are easy to find, and few menus require more than a few taps to access.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but only the XSE trim has wireless device charging.

How’s storage and cargo? The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid takes a small hit when it comes to cargo capacity, accommodating 33.5 cubic feet as opposed to the standard RAV4’s 37.6 cubic feet. Still, there’s plenty of space for all your luggage, and you can fold the rear seats down with minimal effort. Interior storage is helped by some extra shelves cut into the dash, an available wireless charging pad, and a good-size center armrest bin.

Is the Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid a good value? The RAV4’s cabin is very well built, with nice layered materials and tactile touches such as rubberized grip surfaces on the interior door pulls and the radio and climate knobs.
The Plug-in Hybrid’s price is about $10,000 higher than the comparable RAV4 Hybrid trim levels. Your ability to recoup that premium depends on your electricity rates, how often you recharge, and how much you utilize the all-electric range. Admittedly, that’s tough math to do. It’s a lot easier to tell that the RAV4 PHEV costs a few thousand more than its Hyundai and Kia rivals.
The warranty for hybrid components is extended past Toyota’s usual coverage. Two years of free scheduled maintenance is also included. This is good coverage.

How’s the fuel economy? On our standardized evaluation route, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid easily logged 48 miles of electric-only propulsion (6 miles better than the EPA’s 42-mile estimate). That’s enough to cover most people’s average commute and daily driving. Once the gas engine kicks in, the RAV4 Plug-in is estimated to return 38 mpg, which is similar to the RAV4 Hybrid. You can also likely drive nearly 600 miles with a full tank of gas and fully charged battery.

All-electric range is the main appeal of the RAV4 Plug-in. Not only can it significantly help reduce your use of gas if you can frequently charge the battery, but it gets up to highway speeds quickly too.

I have previously owned 5 plug-in cars from different manufacturers, starting with the Prius plug-in in 2011. I loved the Prius for its reliability but it didn’t have enough space. The RAV4 solved my problem. It is roomy but also super maneuverable. It drives like a sports car, parks like a compact car, and fits enough groceries as a minivan. The only downside is it doesn’t fit 9 … people, but that’s not why I bought it.
