At the end of January, Honolulu Police Department’s District 8 covering West Oahu reported 14 e-dirt bikes were confiscated and 20 citations were issued to adults and juveniles for violations that involved illegal operation and roadway use, according to a news release.

“These enforcement efforts are centered on safety,” said District 8 Captain Marino Carreira in the release. “Many electric dirt bikes are not street-legal and can reach dangerously high speeds, creating serious risks for riders, pedestrians, and motorists. We urge families and riders to understand the law and choose compliant e-bikes that meet state requirements and can be properly registered.”

Multiple enforcement operations in the Ewa and Kapolei areas were carried out as part of HPD’s traffic safety initiative aimed at reducing crashes and injuries.

“Your safety is our priority,” reiterated Assistant Chief Brian Lynch to Spectrum News Hawaii. “HPD officers are carrying out islandwide enforcement operations to keep our streets free from illegal e-bike and e-dirt bike activity.” Lynch says the enforcement operations are occurring on an ongoing basis across Oahu.
