The Ford Ranger PHEV, or Ranger Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, is going to be a best seller. That might not be what you want to hear, or even what you expect, but tax talks and the hybrids edge out the diesels. So, if you’re going to buy one of these new hybrid pick-ups you’re going to need to know the dimensions of the Ford Ranger PHEV.

In simple terms, the Ranger PHEV dimensions are much the same as the regular diesel models, but we’re breaking this out into a whole fresh article because we think that the size of Ford Ranger PHEV will become a bit lost in all the mess of other range models.

So this is the guide to the Ranger PHEV dimensions, but it is also the guide for the Ford Ranger PHEV XLT, Range PHEV Wildtrak dimensions, the Ranger PHEV Platinum dimensions and the Ranger PHEV MS-RT dimensions. That’s because all those models share the same basics.

Ok – the MS-RT is a little different, and we may have to pull that out seperately another day, but we’re talking fractions here or there, and let’s face it, if you’re buying a pick-up with a bodykit you’re probably not going to be all that worried about the real world practicalities of the thing.

In this guide we will explain how the PHEV compares with the standard Ranger in length, width, height, load bed size, and ground clearance. Our aim is to help readers understand whether the Ranger PHEV meets their needs – the short answer is yes it probably does.

If you’re interested in the Ranger PHEV, don’t forget to read our Ford Ranger PHEV review, which covers the launch model and the whole range, and there’s a seperate review of the most popular Ford Ranger PHEV Wildtrak trim.

Ford Ranger dimensions overview

The Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid introduces electric power to the UK’s best-selling pickup truck, but without compromising its practicality. Despite adding more tech under the skin, the overall size and proportions remain pretty close to the standard Ranger double cab. That means the same useful load space, comfortable interior and the benefit of an electric-only driving range of up to 28 miles. Oh, and the tax. Did we mention the tax?

Speaking of tax, don’t forget there’s an advice page on the pick-up truck double cab taxes.

Let’s take a quick look at the dimensions of the Ford Ranger PHEV before we dive into the exact size of this pick-up.

The Ranger has a length of 5.35m, a maximum width of 2.2m and a height of 1.9m. That’s the basics, but you’re probably going to want to know a bit more.

Ford Ranger PHEV length

The overall length of the Ford Ranger PHEV prety much the same as the standard double cab model. Importantly the rear is the one that is the same, and that’s a good thing, because it means that it is completely compatibile with existing Ranger accessories like tonneau covers, canopies and hardtops.

The Ranger PHEV actually a slightly smaller length of 5,350mm, rather than 5,370mm. That makes is 2cm smaller. But it is and is based on the same 3,270mm wheelbase and has a front overhang of 865mm and rear overhang of 1,215mm.

Ford Ranger PHEV width

Width is somehting that doesn’t change model-to-model in the Ranger portfolio, so the Ford Ranger PHEV width is exactly the same with the mirrors extended as the diesel model, with a maximum of 2,208mm.

The PHEV’s door mirrors can be folded to make parking in tighter spaces easier, and they really do fold in nicely, trimming nearly 20cm off the total width of the car, making it just a fraction over 2m. The body with itself is smaller still at 1,920mm.

Ford Ranger PHEV height

The height of the Ranger PHEV is very similar to that of the conventional Ranger, in fact, there’s just 1mm in it. We’re guessing that’s a weight thing. The Ranger PHEV is heavier than a standard diesel pick-up because of the higher kerbweight and increased gross vehicle weight to allow it to have batteries but still carry over one tonne of payload.

That hasn’t affected its overall height though, and the suspension remains unfazed by the weight, dropping just 1mm by our reckoning, and measurements.

Of course, it is important to note that this figure can vary slightly depending on the model and tyre choice.

There’s also the small matter of optional accessories such as roof rails. That’s particularly imporant to note if you have a Ranger PHEV Stormtrak, as the overall height of the Stormtrak is higher because it got standard roof bars, with pop-up rails to support the cleve sliding sports hoop bar, which can turn it into a carrier for wood, pipes, surfboards, you name it.

Ford Ranger PHEV load bed dimensions

Here’s where the big change occurs. We say big… we’re not talking life changing, but the Ford Ranger PHEV does come with a disadvantage. A 3cm disadvantage if you want to get all geeky. That’s because the load bed floor has been raised by 31mm to make room for the High Voltage Battery, so although technically it is reduced, it’s really very small.

What that means is the majority of the load bed is 31mm higher, however, it tapers down to the regular load height in the last 20cm of the load bed. That means the loading height is still the same, and that there’s also a sort of ramp as you go up to the main height.

The result is that the bed height is slightly reduced at 498mm, compared to the diesel model’s 529mm.

here is no reduction in bed length or width, though, so it remains as practical as ever. The overall PHEV load bed length is 1,638mm, with a slight reduction higher up because of the roller shutter which makes it 1,471mm. The width is 1,224mm between the wheel arches and 1560mm overall.

The load area is large enough to take a full Euro pallet between the wheel arches. The tailgate can also hold a massive 750kg – but we’ll cover more on that in our payloads guide.

Ford Ranger PHEV ground clearance

Ground clearance is important for any pickup truck used off road, and the Ranger PHEV gets the same capability as its diesel counterparts. The underfloor battery pack is protected and does not affect approach, departure, or breakover angles and the ground clearance is broadly the same.

The Ranger XLT PHEV has a slightly lower ground clearance of 215mm, while the Wiltrak and Stormtrak have an ground clearance of 226mm as hybrids.

Compare that to the diesels, and you’ll see that both Wildtrak and XLT have a 237mm ground clearance.

Wading depth, though, is unchanged for all models whether it is hybrid or ICE diesel, at 800mm.
