
NHK tends to convey an overly optimistic view on the Japanese car industry's EV prowess. Today, they think Daihatsu – which hasn't been present in Europe for 13…thirteen…years will be able to set standards for light and affordable EVs on the continent. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of more kei cars here and the Dacia Hipster is hinting at the same trend. But falling asleep after the seismic LEAF and with a current BEV sales share of 2% in Japan, as well as outsourcing new EVs to Changan (Mazda) or Dongfeng and GM (Honda), the Japanese car industry doesn't look to be in any position to define the EV market – neither for private transport, nor commercial services.
