BMW Australia has confirmed a series of technical upgrades and portfolio revisions for the 2026 X1 and X2 model ranges.

The update is headlined by the introduction of the X1 xDrive25e, a new entry point for the brand’s plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) line-up, which previously started with the X3 30e xDrive and spanned all the way up to high-performance models like the M5 and XM.
These updated variants and new models are scheduled to arrive in the Australian market in mid-2026.
The revisions include powertrain enhancements, higher standard specifications, and a simplified range structure across both model lines.
The X1 xDrive25e features a powertrain combining a three-cylinder combustion engine with an electric motor and a 14.2kWh high-voltage battery.
This configuration delivers a combined power output of 180kW and a total torque of 477Nm.
The electric motor alone contributes 80kW to the system, enabling an electric-only driving range of 78 to 86 kilometres under WLTP testing.
Charging is supported by an 11kW AC system as standard, allowing a full battery charge in one hour and 45 minutes using single- or three-phase power.
Petrol engines in the X1 and X2 ranges will transition to the EU6e emissions configuration to align with the upcoming Australian WLTP testing standards.
As part of this shift, the three-cylinder engines in both model ranges will now feature 48-volt mild-hybrid systems for the first time.
Due to the inclusion of petrol particulate filters required for these regulations, the X1 M35i and X2 M35i models will see a 12kW reduction in power output.
The fully electric iX1 xDrive30 and iX2 xDrive30 will be equipped with new silicon carbide (SiC) inverters.
These units are designed to enhance performance, power density, and overall battery range for the dual-motor electric models.
BMW is simplifying its compact SUV portfolio by removing the entry-level electric X1 eDrive20 and X2 eDrive20 variants.
The petrol-powered X1 sDrive18i has also been replaced by the sDrive20i, which gains the 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
Standard specification levels have been increased for the new X1 and X2 petrol models to coincide with the technical updates.
