The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid compact SUV returns for 2026 with a new series-parallel powertrain in place of the previous plug-in system. Simply put, the new system enables the SUV to travel in electric-only, engine-only, or combination mode, depending on power demand. The idea is to max out on fuel efficiency without sacrificing capability.
This feat is accomplished by a newly developed 2.5-liter Subaru boxer engine teamed with an electric motor generator and electric traction motor. They produce 194 horsepower and have an EPA rating of 36 mpg across the board.
In case you haven’t already picked up on it, the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid doesn’t require any external charging. My kind of hybrid.
There are two trim levels: Sport Hybrid and Limited Hybrid. My tester was a Limited Hybrid model.
With three different modes interacting automatically, the new Crosstrek Hybrid powertrain might raise concerns from doubters about uneven performance. No worries. The system is smooth as can be, going about its business imperceptibly. In fact, Crosstrek’s ride is nice and smooth overall, taking rough pavement and bumps without jarring its occupants in the least.
And then there’s the other side of Crosstrek’s personality that exists specifically for tackling rugged terrain, plus Subaru’s famed all-wheel drive system working wonders on and off roads in all kinds of weather. It makes big sense that small Subaru SUVs are a favorite among Pacific Northwesterners.
All 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid models are equipped with the latest version of the brand’s EyeSight driver-assistance technology. It operates more smoothly and quickly and under a greater range of conditions than prior versions. The improvements are due to a wider field of view, updated control software, and the addition of an electric brake booster.
The new EyeSight version can identify cyclists and pedestrians at intersections sooner and, when necessary, alert the driver and apply braking to avoid collisions.
Other active safety features are available for the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid, including reverse automatic braking and blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
Two new exclusive exterior colors, Sand Dune Pearl and Citron Yellow Pearl, are available for the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. They complement the 18-inch dark gray alloy wheels that are also exclusive to the Crosstrek Hybrid.
