In an effort to alleviate youth unemployment and promote the adoption of clean transport within Kenya’s informal sector, Username Sacco has introduced a new credit facility aimed at accelerating the transition to clean transport in the informal mobility sector.

Named the ‘Boda Boda Tuk-Tuk Express Loan,’ the facility offers affordable financing for electric motorcycles and tuk-tuks, enabling young riders and small business operators to acquire income-generating assets at a reasonable cost.

Speaking during the launch, Username Sacco CEO Sarah Wahogo highlighted that the product directly addresses the country’s unemployment issue—currently at 7.23 percent—which disproportionately affects young people.

She emphasized that the shift to electric mobility allows riders to enhance their earnings by saving on fuel costs while contributing to environmental sustainability.

“By facilitating access to electric boda bodas and tuk-tuks, we are enabling young people to acquire income-generating assets more affordably,” Ms. Wahogo stated. “This product empowers riders to earn more sustainably while contributing to a cleaner and more cost-efficient transport ecosystem.” she stated

Under the arrangement, the Sacco will finance electric motorbikes for urban boda boda operations and electric tuk-tuks for both passenger transport and SME logistics.

These units promise lower running costs, longer range per battery swap, and reduced emissions compared to petrol-powered options.

According to Ms. Mercy Gakonyo, Head of Sacco at Username Properties, the facility is designed to promote dignity, productivity, sustainability, and financial inclusion in the transport sector.

“This loan is a game changer,” she remarked. “We are offering flexible repayment periods of up to 24 months for electric motorbikes .” she said
