While the federal electric vehicles credits are gone and some EV sales have predictably dropped, a number of US states still have their own incentives. At the same time, the number of new public EV chargers is steadily expanding.
Some people might be focusing too much on a decline in the sales of some EVs in the US and overreacting to that data point. The current expansion of public EV charging is an important data point as well.
The new public chargers at Walmart locations are very fast — 400 kW — not Level 2 chargers that require hours of charging. Level 2 chargers are just fine in some situations, but for long-distance travel EV drivers typically want to charge in less than one hour.
Adding fast chargers at Walmart locations can draw EV drivers from out of town and in town who want a quick charge while they shop and perhaps have a beverage, a bite, or a biobreak. EV drivers tend to have some cash so providing charging opportunities for them at retail stores makes sense.
The new fast chargers are planned for about 78 Walmart locations, locations that will soon be providing a great service to EV drivers. You may notice some of the locations are in charging deserts or near charging deserts. Adding new fast chargers particularly matters in these areas.
