The new Tesla Model 3 Standard replaces the Rear-Wheel Drive as the most affordable version, but for the best value for money a used Model 3 is still a better option.
This is the new Tesla Model 3 Standard, and it’s now the cheapest car which Tesla sells in the UK. At £37,990, it’s £2,000 cheaper than the old Rear-Wheel Drive version and around £13,000 less than a BMW i4.
It’s great value for money, but if you’re looking for a real bargain then you just can’t beat a second-hand car. Here’s why you should consider a used Tesla Model 3 instead of the new Standard version.
Why should you consider a used Tesla Model 3?
Let’s cut to the chase, the main benefit of a used car is the price you’ll pay. A brand new Tesla Model 3 Standard will set you back £37,990, but we’ve found a 2024 Model 3 Premium with just 9,500 miles on the clock for £28,800*.

So that’s a £9,000 saving over a new one, and it has more features than the Model 3 Standard as well. You get full leather seats, multi-coloured ambient lighting and more premium-feeling interior trims.
It has up to 344 miles of range, and if you are tackling a particularly long trip then you’ll have full access to Tesla’s excellent Supercharger network. The Autopilot suite of driver assistance systems will also take the strain out of those massive journeys.
Why we like the Tesla Model 3
There’s a lot to like about the Tesla Model 3, starting with the way it drives. Even if you go for the most basic version, it’ll still be fast enough to pin you back in your seat. It’s also surprisingly good fun to drive on a twisty road.

You also get loads of technology, and it’s all very easy to use. Everything is centred around the massive touchscreen, which has bright, clear graphics and logical menus. The total lack of physical buttons may not be to everyone’s liking, but it’s not the end of the world when the screen is this good.
Rear legroom is really generous for a car this size – it’s much more spacious than a BMW i4. The 594-litre boot is also among the largest in this class. The Model 3 is properly practical.
Used Tesla Model 3 alternatives
The Model 3 is a great electric car, but it won’t suit everyone. Here are three alternatives you could consider for similar money, and each of these cars has a different advantage over the Tesla.
BMW i4 – the premium choice
The Model 3’s interior is decent, but it just can’t match the BMW i4 in terms of quality. The BMW is also even more fun to drive, but it is a bit pricey compared to the Model 3.
Polestar 2 – the stylish one
If you’re after something which turns heads, the Polestar 2 is a better option. The sleek Scandinavian styling stands out compared to the generic-looking Tesla, but it’s not quite as practical.
BYD Seal – the left-field choice
The BYD Seal is a quick, comfortable and high-tech electric car which you can pick up for even less than a Tesla Model 3, but the touchscreen is much more fiddly to use.
