Tesla has made some interesting tweaks to its Model Y in China, including the introduction of a larger 2K screen as the carmaker attempts to keep up with Chinese-made EVs.

The Model Y remains a popular choice in China and is available in four trims, including the Model Y L.

Now, Tesla has introduced some new changes across the range of Model Y variants, including the base RWD.

The company has also announced some new financing options that could help tempt buyers following the introduction of China’s new five percent purchase tax on new EVs.

What’s new on the Tesla Model Y in China?

Last year was a bit of a bumpy ride for Tesla.

The carmaker faced tough competition from rivals, including BYD, which overtook Tesla to become the world’s biggest-selling EV maker

Tesla saw sales drop by 28 percent in Europe in 2025, but in China, it fared a bit better.

Sales jumped to an all-time high in December, with an increase of more than 13 percent over the same period in 2024.

The boost in sales was bolstered by a flurry of new purchases before the Chinese government withdrew part of an EV tax incentive, much like we saw in the US earlier in 2025.

But in a bid to hold on to its surge in sales, Tesla has made some upgrades to its Model Y.

The car’s 15.4-inch 1080p panel has been upgraded to a 16-inch 2K resolution center display.

The larger display was already in the larger Model Y L, but now it has been introduced across the entire Model Y range.

The carmaker has also ditched the grey headliner in all of its Model Y variants, replacing it with a standard black option that makes the interior look a lot sleeker.

The pricing for the Model Y remains unchanged, but the company has announced some new financing options following the introduction of a tax on new EVs in China.

It’s offering a seven-year low-interest financing package across all of its Chinese-built lineup, as well as a five-year 0 percent financing option for the Model Y L.

Will the Model Y L be coming to the US?

Tesla launched the spacious six-seater Model Y L in China last summer, and it was an immediate hit.

The larger EV pulled in an eye-popping 40,000 orders in a single day.

But despite its success, Elon Musk has said the Model Y L might never come to the American market

On X back in August, one Tesla fan asked when the new variant might be landing in the US.

“This variant of the Model Y doesn’t start production in the US until the end of next year,” Musk responded

“Might not ever, given the advent of self-driving in America.”
