THE END OF GAS! China’s New 824 Wh/kg Battery Is A Total Game Changer
We’ve been saying for a long time now that electric cars are going to have a lot of range when they get solid state batteries. And this true sort of some of the latest solid state batteries which we’re going to see in cars they say within the next 18 months have an energy density of around 400 watt hours per kilo meaning about double what you normally get today. So let’s say you get an EV today. Maybe it has 600 km of range. With the new batteries it might have around 1,000 km of range which is awesome. But that’s actually pretty bad in comparison to these new batteries which Chinese battery company We Lion, one of the biggest battery companies in China, have revealed apparently their batteries have an energy density of 824 W hours per kilo. Meaning if you got a battery today, for example, let’s compare my Xping G6 with an 87 kWh battery. Um, I have 570 km of range in that car. Yeah, my range in that car would be a lot more. I’m going to tell you around about what I think it would be with these new batteries. Hello, my friends. Welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans. You’re watching the Electric Viking. China’s solid state battery company we lion um its chairman Yu Hyen has revealed a breakthrough in solid state battery technology announcing the company has achieved an industry-leading energy density of 824 watt hours per kilogram very specific number isn’t it in laboratory tests with a target exceeding 1,000 W hours per kilogram guys imagine if in 2035 in 10 years from now, there are electric cars with batteries with 824W hours of per kilogram of energy density. Um, that would mean that cars with 600 m or more of range would be pretty common place. Our laboratory tests have demonstrated solid state batteries with energy densities reaching 824 W hours per kilogram and we expect to break the 1,00 per kilogram barrier in the long term said you. Despite the technical breakthrough, you acknowledged that cost factors, particularly expensive raw materials in sulfidebased electrolyte systems remain the primary obstacle to mass commercialization of these batteries. But we could see them in more expensive luxury cars or supercars more more quickly. Initially, these batteries will be deployed in price insensitive applications where safety is paramount, said you. And that’s what I’ve been saying now for years. That’s where these batteries going to come first. Yeah, supercars, expensive luxury cars. He specifically highlighted humanoid robots though as a promising early application field for the technology. Founded in 2016, We Lion New Energy emerged from the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Physics as an industry academia collaboration. The company has deep connections to China’s battery research elite, says KUS China. Its founding team includes Professor Chen Lee Kuan, widely known as the father of Chinese lithium batteries, and notably the doctoral adviser to Robin Zen, founder of CL, the world’s largest battery manufacturer. I’ve I’ve actually uh met the father of Chinese lithium batteries, Professor Chenuan. I’ve met him a few times and um he’s kind of a very comical old guy. Not sure what to make of him to be honest, but anyway, moving on. The company has built a track record in advanced battery development. In 2023, We Lion supplied Neo with 150 kWh semi-olidstate battery packs, enabling them to get 1,44 km of range on a single charge in their electric SUV. We Lion has established production in Beijing, uh, Yang Shu, and two other locations. So they have four different production locations in China with a current annual production capacity of 28 gwatt hours and they plan to increase that production to over 100 gatt hours. The company’s Shenzhen facility serves as a testing ground for solid state batteries with full scale production targeted for around 2027. Now, Car News China has kindly provided us with all this information in this video and they say that according to recent regulatory filings with the China Securities Regulatory Commission, We Lion New Energy is now undergoing IPO guidance with Citicur. So, CITIC Securities preparing to list on China’s growth enterprise market. If successful, it would become the first pure plane solid state battery company to go public in China. So I mean is this company legit? While Weine New Energy has previously gotten investments through multiple rounds, its investors include uh major capital firms like Sequoia and Hillhouse. Uh Huawei, Jile, Xiaomi and Neo. Yeah, some of the biggest players in China and even even in the world have invested in this company. So they are very much legit. When will we see these 824watth per kilogram energy density batteries? Well, I’ve got no idea. My guess might be 2028, 2029 in expensive cars. I’m talking, you know, vehicles that are more than $100,000 US. So, these kinds of batteries will be around mass- prodduced by 2035. Not necessarily from one particular company. I think from multiple companies. There are multiple battery companies around the world working on energy densities of 800 watt hours per kilogram in solidstate batteries and it is unquestionably going to happen. The question is not will it happen. The question is when will it happen? Now when it does when these batteries can be mass-produced at a price that people can actually afford. Well at that point there is going to be zero reason to want a diesel or gasoline powered vehicle. they just won’t be in any way a logical decision. I think people will completely move away from them and eventually look back and say, “Remember those internal combustion vehicles? That kind of like the horse and cart.
