INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana University Police Department is stepping up efforts to combat e-bike and scooter theft on campus by using “bait bikes.”
According to a Tuesday news release issued by IUPD, these bikes will be GPS-enabled and have enhanced security system footage and community reports.
During the fall semester, IUPD recovered seven bikes and made four arrests at IU Bloomington. At IU Indianapolis, police recovered two bikes and made four arrests.
Theft and burglary prevention tips
Lock up. This includes doors and windows in your residence hall or office, as well as your vehicle. Use a sturdy U-style bike lock or bike locker to secure your bicycle or scooter.
Don’t share your house or car keys with anyone you don’t fully trust.
Hide valuables or money out of plain view so criminals can’t easily see them through a window.
Park your vehicle or bike in well-lit, busy areas.
Send packages to an address where they can be picked up quickly once delivered.
Report suspicious activity by calling or texting 911, using the Rave Guardian app, or filling out a form online.
IUPD asks if a bike or other valuables go missing, contact them immediately to increase the chances of recovering it.
