Porsche slows EV push, extends ICE and hybrid strategy

Facing slower EV demand, Porsche eases targets: extending ICE lifecycles, leaning into hybrids, and keeping Cayenne, Macan and cars in play as markets vary.

Porsche admits that demand for electric vehicles is growing more slowly than expected, so the strategy is becoming less rigid. Early in the decade, the brand aimed for 80% of sales to be electric by 2030, with nearly the entire lineup (except the 911) gradually moving to pure-electric replacements. The course has now been adjusted: the company will keep pushing electrification while extending the life cycle of combustion models and embracing a more flexible, hybrid-leaning approach.According to 32CARS.RU, Porsche is developing a new SUV with an internal combustion engine—essentially a gasoline counterpart to the Macan. Another telling move concerns the Cayenne: the third-generation ICE model will remain on sale alongside the fourth generation, which will be electric. It is also reported that future Cayman/Boxster models will still get ICE versions, while the electric Panamera and a new flagship SUV positioned above the Cayenne are no longer top priorities.Development chief Michael Steiner described the situation as complicated, noting that the Taycan and Macan have not met internal sales plans, and that a downturn in China has added pressure. He emphasized that the strategy is not being torn up, only the pace is changing, because readiness for EVs varies significantly from country to country. In parallel, Porsche sees value in hybrids: they can cover city driving on electricity and rely on combustion power for long trips. In this context, a blended path comes across as pragmatic, and keeping key ICE models in play alongside EVs looks like a measured hedge that should keep loyal customers engaged while the market catches up.Over the first nine months of 2025, Porsche delivered 212,509 vehicles: 23.1% were electric and 12.1% were plug-in hybrids. In Europe, the share of plug-in models is higher, reaching 56%.
