A Bergen County man was in critical condition Tuesday after a vehicle struck the e-bike he was riding near an entrance to the New Jersey Turnpike in Teaneck, police said.
The crash occurred about 6:30 p.m. Monday on Degraw Avenue, near the ramp to Interstate 95 South, according to Teaneck Police Chief Andrew R. McGurr.
“The operator of the e-bike, a 22-year-old Fort Lee man, was found breathing but unconscious and appeared to have sustained serious injuries,” McGurr said in a statement.
Police officers performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived and transported the man to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition Tuesday morning.
The driver of the car, a 20-year-old Teaneck woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with detectives, McGurr said. The woman was not hurt.
“Detectives also interviewed a witness who remained on scene and assisted by helping to block traffic,” McGurr said.
McGurr said a preliminary investigation showed the e-bike operator was headed east on the center median of Degraw Avenue when he abruptly entered the road to cross the eastbound lanes and was struck.
No charges had been filed as of Tuesday morning. The crash remains under investigation.
