Electric Outlander on Apache Backcountry Tracks
It’s got so much quick acceleration. It’s crazy. Holy. There we go. There we go. Hey, good morning everyone. I am at Fun Motorsports in Saskatoon. I got a call that something might be here for us. And here it is. So, let’s get this sucker outside and let’s get out of the box. Let’s see what it is. That is a very good hint right there, though. I’ll tell you that for free. Okay, boys. We’re here with Hunter. He’s just taking the bolts out of this sucker. Let’s get this cover off. Let’s see what the heck we got in here. It is about – 5. We got a brisk wind. Winter’s coming, boys. Freak. I wonder if there’s going to be any muskig left. It’s going to be frozen freaking solid. Okay, hunter’s just musling this thing. Nice. Oh my goodness. If you guys didn’t know already. Oh, it’s a gray one. Freaking right. the old electric Outlander. I’m going to apologize to this machine right now. It’s going to see some things that no Outlander should see. Just kidding. So, this is the first PDI they’ve done electric outlander. So, we’re going to all be learning today. All right. Almost buttoned up. It’s got a little bit of charge going into it. Making sure that’s all good. Hooked up the computer. And really, what what was there really to do for PDI? Not a lot. Hey, fluids. Uh, front bumper, back bumper, program, a whole lot. Check it all out. Uh, he said he did, uh, align one of the panels. One of the panels is a little bit out of alignment. So, that’s what’s really cool when you got a a really good tech is they, you know, actually do the proper PDI and look over everything. So, when you get home, you don’t have like say like a shifter linkage issue or something like that or your panels don’t line up. So, make sure um cycle everything, make sure you know the fan turns on when it’s supposed to. On this, the fan is different. Doesn’t cool the engine, it cools the battery and charger and stuff. So, he’s got it plugged in. He’s checking make sure that turns on. And very cool. Like, we are moments away from loading this sucker up, though. Man, I really, really like the gray, you guys. It’s so freaking cool, man. No one’s going to know what this machine is. I will say it didn’t come with a charger. I had to purchase the charger separately. I just put it in here. So, if you’re buying an EV Outlander, do not leave the dealership unless you have a charger. Otherwise, you’re going to get home and you’re going to be sad. Unless you already have an EV vehicle, it could be the exact same plug. But yeah, I’m sure it’s the same one as their uh motorcycles, electric motorcycles. So, they had one in stock thankfully. So, we got one. We’re freaking set. So, let’s bolt the freaking backcountry tracks on. Let’s bolt some plows on. Let’s Let’s get going. I got so many plans for this thing. All right, he’s going to take it for a little spin. Make sure everything’s good. He was just saying it’s so weird. Usually you start it, you know, obviously let it warm up a bit, but for electric, there’s nothing really to do. Switch the switch on. Push the reverse button. So reverse is a button up here. Yeah. Yeah. It’s so funny. Just getting someone’s first reaction at their first experience because it’s like nothing else. It just like it’s it’s so smooth. The throttle control is so precise. Obviously, you know, zero noise other than the tires. Other than the tires, but imagine the power. I never even thought about that, you guys. Imagine the winch running off that gigantic battery. We’re going to be able to freaking attach this to the Titanic and pull the Titanic up in the ocean with the power of that battery. I never thought of that. Obviously, it’s probably has some sort of step down. I’ll have to look into that. I didn’t even think about that. Some sort of step down to get to 12 volts for the winch. I never really thought about the winch. The winch. It must have some sort of step down cuz the batteries It would have to. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. I never thought about that. But you have infinite power for winching. Yep. It looks pretty sweet. I had to enjoy. Yeah, they are so much fun. Oh, they have a good time. Absolutely. Well, it’s the same frame as the other Gen 3s. Yeah, exactly. Just kind of modified it to fit the Yeah, the electric bounce. So, it takes a little bit of getting used to getting into reverse, but once you’re used to it, it it like you said, you can engage reverse while you’re still moving forward. So, as far as plowing, it’s going to be like zip. It’s going to be so awesome. Well, at least it warmed up. Just kidding. It didn’t. It’s super windy and cold still. So awesome. I love coming here. Fun motorsports. They got lots of young techs. Really, really good techs here. And of course, it’s freaking November, so sled setup is in full gear right now. So, man, these this green looks so sharp. God, I can’t wait. I hope we get 10 ft of snow this year. I hope we get so much snow the entire economy shuts down. Just kidding. Man, they’re so dang fun. Gen fives, you guys. If you haven’t ridden a two-stroke turbo, oh my goodness, are they fun. test everything. Any any weird noises, any sort of leaks. All right. Pretty sporty, eh? Yeah. She kind of rips and goes. Quite fun, actually. Yes, they are so much fun. It’s like a go car but just better. Exactly. And I do have to do an alignment on it. It’s a little bit Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Perfect. Awesome. Sounds good. See, that’s what I’m talking about. That’s what I’m talking about. Good tech right there. Handlebars a little bit out of align. I don’t know if you have to adjust the tie rods or you have to adjust the handlebars, but we’ll get that tracking straight. Exactly. A lot of times, you know, guys just kind of go through the motions and send you home and then you’re not happy with the product because there’s little issues that should have been caught in PDI. All right. Colton’s going to load it up. Huge. Thanks, buddy. So, yeah, he uh tires were a little bit uh um out of alignment. He got all that squared up, so he’s going to lower. Yeah. Can you imagine backwards poof right off the ramp? Heavy Chevy maxed out this lift height. This thing sits so high. Just kidding. Sport. Yeah, sport mode’s super peppy. Awesome. Heck yeah. Next stop, Ripfest. It’s probably good. there. I’ll I’ll probably find some blocks or something. Yep. Perfect. Thank you. Awesome. Thanks for everything, buddy. Heck yeah. On the screen just for you, too. Oh, perfect. Do the right on. All right. Okay. We got home last night. I unloaded it. I threw it on the charger. It charged. It only took 3 hours to get from it was at like 20% to 100%. So, Miss Awesome. This is my first time. I’ve never It’s be her first rip. You ever looked at them? Didn’t mean Well, I looked at them. Looked at him, but you just Yeah, you just You have no idea. Okay. For So, for reverse, you just press and hold that button for one second and let go. You You already pushed it too long. It’s 1 second. There you go. Perfect. That’s it. A little throttle. It’s It’s very different. What were you doing? I was waiting for this. Where’s the start button? Oh, it’s on. Okay. We are headed over to our little bunk house. We need to get some measurements. I was like, we might as well take this for Mrs. Austin’s first little rip. Okay. Same thing. One second. There you go. That’s it. Okay. Just wait. Okay. Okay. I won’t put it in sport mode right now. Okay. So, just Oh, right. Right there. Right there. Okay. So, just go for like a quick little cruise like over to me over here. Okay. It is very terrible out just instantly. I got my proper riding shoes on here. Instant. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Perfect. Instant smiles. That’s what this thing should be called. The instant instant smile machine. Just It’s so weird not hearing the motor running. Yes. Just a tiny little squeeze and it just just starts moving. Yeah, too. When I’m using like full pull or lockess, you’re like, you know, like that, but it doesn’t have that. So smooth. Yeah, it’s straight up. Yes. Okay. She said she’s instantly ready for support mode. So Oh, what’s the difference? Oh, you’ll see. I didn’t want that. Okay. Pin it. I pin it. She just slowly rolls away. Oh, I’m sorry. It is usually very quiet, but not that you’ll even be able to tell because it is so freaking windy and blustery. We’re just waiting for snow. It’s freaking halfway through November already. Whoa. Whoa. Get a speed racer. Three weeks later. We have next to no miles on this little sucker. And we were planning on trying to hit some musk egg or hit some water, but man, there’s been too many nights of minus 20 and everything is frozen freaking solid. So, I guess we just got to bust out some uh ice cyclones. So crazy. It immediately hits the speed limiter at like 80 some kilometers an hour. Immediately. And then you can feel it kind of hitting limiter. Man, we got to crack this thing so it’s wide open. Okay, we got to try some cyclones. That was just little spinarounds. Scary. This is crazy. It’s so crazy. Yeah, I’m coming to you. That was pretty good. Oh my goodness. It’s the weirdest freaking feeling. And like you know it’s that instant there’s no clutches to backshift. It’s crazy crazy feeling, man. Woo! Man, what you guys don’t know is I got an angle kit installed. That’s why I drift so good. Okay, let’s go try some freaking high-speed stuff. I’m getting dizzy. It’s my walker trail. Whoa. Holy cow. Holy smokes. That was the edge of the suspension travel there. That was full compression and it just rebounded me up. Oh my god, this thing is such a freaking Guys, you know what we’re doing? We need a bit more snow. Well, if we don’t get the snow, we’re just going to head west. But we are putting Apache backs on this thing. Can you imagine this thing 6 in in the air, 11 ft long? Going to see if this little horse engine can spin those suckers. I have a feeling it’s going to work just fine. All right, we got what do we got here? We got 27 km on the clock. It is definitely time to put some backounts on this sucker. So, I am hoping that it is the same as every other Gen 3. I have the mounts. These are the mounts that I used on base camp. So, since we swapped to S3 arms, I have these factory arms, what the mounts are made for. So, I’m hoping I can just use those pieces for the back. The front’s already there. I checked the front arms. That little mounting hole is on the front lower A arm. So, the fronts are going to be no problem. I’m just hoping these rear lowers are going to accept those brackets and then we are going to run backounts on this baby. Oh, we don’t have a ton of snow, but we got a bit of snow. So, might as well get them on and uh run them and see what this sucker can do with tracks on. It’s got so much instant torque. I can’t freaking wait. It’s going to be such a freaking blast. Do some four-wheel drive burnout tornado spins on the pond. We’ll see. Okay, I’ll pick up after we got the fronts on. I’m expecting those to go in like 15 minutes. So, I’ll throw those on and then we’ll pick up there. Okay. Sorry. I know. I was going to say I was going to pick up after we got the fronts on, but there everything was going so dang good. I just threw the backs on, too. Just like exactly like the Gen 3 XMR. Everything bolted up literally perfectly. I If you guys can see, but exact same bolts. Everything was identical. So, everything just went on like freaking butter. Now, look at this thing. Now, what a freaking tank. Look at the size of this battery, you guys. Crazy. And this is where they have their liquid cooling. That’s what keeps it cool when you’re when you’re charging it on a level two charger. That’s why you can charge this thing so fast cuz it actually has a rad and everything. And that’s just to keep the battery cool. So, I think under high discharge and high charging, it keeps everything in check. Man, what a freaking unit. Look at this back here. There’s the electric motor right there. That’s the Rotax e- power unit. So, it’s mounted in the back. It goes into So, you still have a two-speed just like a normal quad. You have low and high, but for reverse, you don’t shift reverse. You push a button to go into reverse. It’s very cool. I I’ll show you that outside. And then you have a a decently long prop shaft that goes here all the way up to the front to give you four-wheel drive. Basically, that’s your front drive shaft cuz all the power unit is back here. I think just to keep everything as far as uh weight distribution and everything. I’m sure they played around with that. Battery placement, motor placement, transfer case, all that. Transmission, I mean, all that. So, very, very cool. What a freaking beast. I I even turn the wheels back and forth to get it down to squat. So, it’s not sitting up on the springs. It’s sitting very level. I just gave her a quick rinse cuz I had a bunch of cattail fuzz in there. I don’t know how that happened. Okay, I’m going to go see if Mrs. Austin’s around and I’ll see get her what she thinks. Okay, are you ready? And you never really seen I took the side panel off and you get to see the entire battery. It’s It’s freaking impressive. Okay, ready? And I even wiggled I even wiggled the front to get it down. Yes. This is crazy. Isn’t it freaking just beautiful? The lake. Holy cow. Yeah. Yeah. Isn’t that crazy? That battery is something else. That’s why like we’re planning on doing some videos with our biggest Blue Eddie power box. We’re going to see we’re going to drive it down the trail. basically take all the b power out of the battery as far as we can go and then we’re going to try to hook up a bluei and see how much we can put back into it to see if it’s you know feasible to bring something on the back rack sort of like a jerry can for more fuel. So, but yeah, that battery is like 10 blue edies. Not 10. We already know that almost every machine looks super cool. Yes, especially on backount. Yes. But is this capable of Oh, I think it’s going to be super capable. I can’t wait to freaking try it. The only the worst part is I sort of jumped the gun. We don’t really have much for snow, so it’s not like we’re going to be getting stuck, but we can you’ll be able to feel the acceleration spots where there’s some snow drifting. Do you think so? We’ll we’ll try to find what we can find. Definitely out in our field there isn’t. But yeah, I think we can find a some ditch somewhere or something. Yes, if we can find a couple feet, that would be just mint. But even still, even if not snow tonight, is it? Yeah. Oh, that’d be awesome. Can you imagine waking up to another foot of snow? That would be sweet. But anyways, yeah, you’ll still be able to feel the acceleration, feel how it, you know, the power steering handles it, all that. I’m looking forward to cuz ripping it across the snow in regular tires. Yeah. And noticing the difference. The tracks, I think, grip the ground better and feel less sketchy. If you if it if it goes through the snow into the ground, Yeah. the tracks are going to be going to be hooking up for sure. Okay, we’ll have to wait till tomorrow for the first rip. But that was such an easy install. I told him I was going to update him after I got the fronts on, but I just did the whole thing because it went so quick. Okay, this is so crazy. Okay, boys. It sucks. It’s likeus 20 out, but we want I want to see how this thing handles these tracks. What’s crazy is all you’re going to hear is the tracks. What does it feel like? I don’t I can’t really tell anything right now. It just It feels like you’re getting pulled by something else cuz you don’t have the rev or anything to and then you just start moving. So, super weird. So, we’ll see what we can find for a little bit of snow and we’ll go over and rip this sucker. You know, we can jump on the trampoline after. You can hear every little noise. Holy. It’s got so much grip acceleration. It’s crazy. teeny bit. We got We got just the teeniest bit of snow here where I took off over there just went right down to grass. So overall it feels capable. It feels so freaking cool. Comfortable and like I did a little bit of when the tires were still on over in the grass in the humps there. I went through in low because that’s what I really like about this is it’s just so controllable. like you’re not you’re not burning the belt by going slow. So you can you can sort of crawl over stuff that you know you’d have to sort of gas it through on you know on anything else. So I imagine this will be the very thing with tracks on man. It’s blow my freaking mind. I’m in two wheel drive. No wonder it felt so weird. So I uh I had it in two wheel drive because you have to spin you know to line the lug nuts up last night. No wonder cuz I was like, man, it’s really pushing in the corners. Duh. Cuz the front’s not even pulling. That is crazy. That shows you how little of snow. I didn’t even I didn’t even know. Can you imagine the traction now? You ready? Are you have fun yet? In classic backcountry fashion, you get a faceful for sure. Oh my god, that’s awesome. So, really the only thing is the range. That’s the only question. It turns them so well. You know what you haven’t tried yet? What? The plow? Yes. I have to get I have the plow mounts. I just have to see if I need a plow frame extension because look how high this sits compared to factory. So, I’ll see if I have the parts, but we’re definitely going to do some plowing, man. It’s so crazy. So, what do you think versus tires? Pretty stable. Yeah, very similar, eh? jerk in action. But I mean, this is snow compared to dirt, right? So, yeah. Well, it’s pretty much dirt with the hills and stuff like that. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Okay, we’re headed down to some What’s underneath you is what I’m trying to say. Yeah. Some smooth ice. Be careful here. Hang on. You ready? The ice is making noise. Is it? No go for two wheel drive. Definitely likes to push. Crazy. So the crazy part is this is probably like at least 4t deep right here. So if we broke through. But what’s crazy is you really can’t swamp an electric quad as Kyle Colin proved. They had it completely underwater. That was our plan, but we didn’t get our electric Audi until it was so cold. Everything was frozen solid. So, man, crazy. I literally can’t wait for more snow. So, this is Austin going to go inside. Her hands are freezing. Like I said, it doesn’t seem like it, but it’s freaking 20 below tonight. It’s getting to -30 – 39 with the wind. So, we’re going to split a little with this afternoon. But, I’m going to go for I’m going to go across the field and back cross field and back just to see range like just to see how quickly we plow through the battery. Right now, it looks like we took two ticks off the battery. So, not bad for, you know, 25 minutes of screwing around. If you can see that, I’ll And it’s in the winter, so that’s a definite. Yeah. And I’m in sport and I’m just holding it. Holding it, right? So, we’re not trying for any any uh uh not mileage, but uh any extreme, you know, battery saving techniques. Okay, I’m going to go for a quick rip. Ah, I had to change GoPros cuz the battery died and I changed helmets. But let’s go for a few rips and check out this sucker’s battery life. A little low here. Let’s go around the track. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. doing. Did you see what that said? Sorry, guys. What did that say? It gave us some sort of battery warning. We’re down to like one bar, one or two bars, and it gave us some sort of warning. So, and trip odometer. Hang on. Oh. Uh, propulsion battery, low state of charge. charge soon. So, basically giving you a warning about the about the battery. Says we have 3 km of range left. So, I’ll look back to when we started our first clip at the time and I’ll see. I would say we probably been out here maybe 45 minutes going off and on. And you can definitely tell as the battery gets lower. I thought it would have been stayed full power until it got low and then dropped off like a lithium like you know you like your RC’s, but I guess that hits lipo cut. But anyways, um what you feel is is when you get under half, you start to feel less performance for sure. As far as plowing and pulling a wagon of wood and all that, it would still do that no problem. But as far as full speed across the field, you can definitely feel that. So, we’ll plug it in. I only have a level one charger. You guys will see. I’ll plug it in. Oh, it’s just telling me that I’ve been sitting here too long and drive. Um I only have a level one charger, but we’ll see how long it takes to char. I’ve never had it down to like where it’s telling me to recharge with 3 km of range left. So, we’ll go inside. We’ll plug it in and that’s good. Anyways, I’m freaking cold. Okay, back in the shop. Okay, so I switched to my enclosed helmet and uh it’s great to ride in, but man, you cannot talk cuz you’re you’re sort of muffled by your little nose piece here. And then I switched to an old Hero 9, the 13. The battery died like in 20 minutes. So, well, like I said, you already knowing how long it went. I don’t know. I’ll review the footage how long time wise we went, but like I said, we’re down to 3k range and we’re down to one battery. So, we’ll get the charger over here. Like I said, it’s just a level one charger. Okay, so it’s down to 3 km range um and one bar. So, oh, hang on. Shift back here. Okay, so down to 13% now. That gives us 13%. So, 4 hours to reach 100% down to one bar. So, really, that’s not that’s not terrible. I always thought the level one chargers were going to be like it was going to take all night. Like, basically, you plug it in and 12 hours later would be charged. So, not too bad at all. We’ll get this sucker. Look at how packed it is in there. Holy smokes. That uh battery is definitely liquid cooled, snow cooled, ice cooled. So, but yeah, we’ll get her charged up. So, do you think there’s better longevity to the battery or not? Uh, no. I don’t think I don’t think batteries like being that cold. I don’t think they I think they like uh account for that though when they Oh, um I I imagine I have no idea. There probably is a lot that goes into like think about designing something to work in all different climates. But they wanted it to work in the snow. De definitely they want Yeah, it’s of course they want people to use it for like I said plowing snow, hauling wood, stuff around the property, checking cattle, doing all sorts of stuff. So they try to make the most comprehensive machine they can. So but yeah, that was pretty awesome. That was pretty cool. First little rip for for It turns these tracks like no problem. Like it it it’s feels just as sporty as it does on tires as far as the instant. The only thing is us short people. Yeah, it’s hard to get up on. They do sit so freaking tall. I’m sorry I’m in 6. It’s kind of hard to tell, but it sits so tall. This is It’s not bad. Like I said, when you’re in the shop, but when you’re in snow and you’re already a foot or two down in the snow trying to get on, a lot of times you have to climb the track and then get on. Even like on, you know, on full pull and Yeah. But yeah, all in all, that’s awesome. That’s going to do it for the video. I I literally we shot this right now and I’m going to try to get uploaded for tonight. So, I got a little bit editing to do and I’m going to upload. But, as always, we wouldn’t be able to do any of this without you guys. We freaking love you guys. We got the 12 days of giveaways going on. If you haven’t subscribed, hit that subscribe button.
