HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — A man is dead after his Tesla rolled multiple times during a massive, multi-vehicle crash in Huntington Beach on Tuesday.
According to the Huntington Beach Police Department, the crash happened around 2:45 p.m. at the intersection of Goldenwest Street and Heil Avenue.
Huntington Beach police said when officers arrived at the scene, they identified seven vehicles involved in the crash, including one that ended up flipped upside down.
Firefighters treated the injured patients at the scene and transported three people to local hospitals in stable condition.
AIR7 flew over the scene, where it appeared that four vehicles were damaged in the crash. Firefighters were seen placing a tarp over a vehicle that was flipped upside down.
Police said the driver of the overturned vehicle, a 37-year-old man from Huntington Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Video obtained by Eyewitness News shows the moment two of the cars collided in the intersection.
An innocent driver involved in the crash suffered cuts from broken glass and was left bloodied, video showed. His young child was in the backseat but did not appear injured.
Investigators believe a gray Tesla Model 3 driving eastbound on Heil Avenue at a high rate of speed lost control as it crossed the intersection, colliding with several vehicles. Debris from the crash also struck other nearby cars.
The Tesla rolled several times and came to rest east of the intersection, at least 50 yards away, AIR7 video shows. It appeared that at least four vehicles were heavily damaged in the crash. Firefighters were seen placing a tarp over the Tesla that was flipped upside down.
Police said it’s unknown if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash. No arrests have been made, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
According to Orange County officials, one of their probation vehicles was involved in the crash, and two Orange County Probation Officers were injured. One of the officers was taken to the hospital.
There were no other passengers in the probation vehicle at the time of the crash, Orange County Probation said.
