Toyota Motor Europe has initiated strategic partnerships to develop charging infrastructure for BEVs and PHEVs
Toyota Motor Europe has initiated strategic partnerships with energy providers across the region to develop a charging ecosystem for battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The automaker will launch demand side response solutions in the United Kingdom through British Gas and in Germany through The Mobility House Energy during 2026.
The demand side response services will enable smart charging that automatically shifts vehicle charging to off-peak hours when electricity costs are lower. Customers will access intelligent scheduling and remote control via mobile applications, alongside the ability to charge vehicles when renewable energy availability is highest. Participants in grid-balancing programmes will receive incentives and rewards.
The solutions support grid sustainability by balancing electricity demand, reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based peaking power plants and enabling greater integration of intermittent renewable sources including wind and solar. The system also aims to reduce grid extension costs across participating markets.
Toyota Motor Europe plans to expand energy collaborations to additional countries and introduce vehicle-to-grid integration. The technology will allow electric vehicles to draw energy from the grid and return it when needed, converting vehicles into mobile energy assets and creating new value streams for customers.
“By enabling smart, flexible and green charging, Toyota is helping to shape a future where mobility and energy work hand in hand for the benefit of customers, communities and the planet,” Leon van der Merwe, vice president of circular economy and energy business at Toyota Motor Europe, said.
