First Drive of the NEW BYD SEAL 6 Touring & Saloon 1.5 DM-i
Hello folks. This is the BYD Seal6. I’m giving you a lot of the information on this car from the passenger seat, which is not how I normally do it, but uh filming opportunities are a wee bit limited today. BYD sold 14 million cars worldwide now, and they are definitely in the big five of worldwide car manufacturers. Uh the reason they’ve done that, or part of the reason why that’s happened, they say, is because they’ve listened to what the public actually wants. They’ve learned from that and they’ve tried to give them it. And one of the things that the the public are saying a lot or certainly this member of the public says a lot is we’ve got enough midsize SUVs. Can we please have something else? And that’s what the CL6 is all about. It’s offered in two forms. You’ve got a saloon and a touring version, estate version. I’m in the estate version of the car at the moment. And they’ve priced it quite competitively. It’s all quite simple. You’ve got two trim levels and basically two prices and that’s about it. Now, both cars use a battery to actually power electric motors that then power the wheels. Um, but we’ve also got a 1.5 L petrol engine in here. That 1.5 L petrol engine is designed to always run at the most efficient RPM. It’s got some very clever sort of thermal management, thermal efficiency going on. So you that kind of does its own thing to always run as efficiently as possible to get power into that battery and power those electric motors. Um there are two trim levels available and the trim level you go for uh makes a difference in terms of the battery size. So I’m just going to talk you through those. If you go for boost which gives you 17in alloys, 12.8 in touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, um your basic driver assistance systems and a rear camera. Uh that one gives you a 10 uh kilowatt hour blade battery, 8.9 second n 62 time and 34 miles of all electric range. Um the saloon is £33,990. The touring is 1,000 more than that. If you go for comfort trim, you’re looking at a 19 kWh battery. You’ve then got 209 brake horsepower, 8.5 second n 62 time, and 65 miles of all electric range. That’s just under £37,000 and again add £1,000 to that if you want the estate rather than the saloon. Um both cars are capable of vehicle to load at 3.3 kW but you need to go for comfort if you want DC charging to be available. In fact, the boost can only charge at 3.3 kW AC charging. The comfort can charge at 6.6 or 26 kW if you’re on a DC charger. That’s not rapid by any means, but don’t forget you’ve also got that petrol engine there. Um, this has got 65 L petrol tank and uh it can tow 750 kilos. That’s the unbreak towing capacity of the car. In the saloon, you’ve got 491 L of boot space that goes up to 1370 with the back row of seats down. In the touring, you’ve got 500 L. That’s up to the parcel shelf. Um, if you take the space up to the roof line as well, you’ve then got 675 L in total. With the back seats down, you’re about 1,535. So, that’s similar to the plug-in hybrid version of the VW Pat. Um, for which this car is going to be a pretty big rival, I would suggest. And I must just say a big thanks to leasing.com for sponsoring today’s video. Okay, so let’s have a look at the interior while we’re here. Um, fit and finish all feels very good. Nice choice of materials. There’s some soft squishy stuff. It all feels like it’s going to last. It feels like it’s going to age very nicely. And where they have used sort of planer plastics, they have judged them a little bit to make them not so boring. We don’t have piano black. We don’t have anything, you know, particularly um outstanding in terms of design, but there’s also nothing overly offensive in here at all. It is a nice yet somewhat conservative cabin. Um switch gear feels good. We’ve got proper buttons and some dials on the steering wheel. Uh you’ve got some of the um ADAS controls. Uh you’ve got your cruise controls, media controls, etc. Of course, voice commands and a telephone button on here. Um we’ve then got the infotainment screen. If you want to see a full infotainment review, go over to my friend Alex’s channel, The Interface Cars, where he always does a full in-depth review of the infotainment. I’ve literally just sort of touched on this today. Um, and I’ve mainly been using the wireless Apple CarPlay, which has been fantastic. There’s plenty of screen real estate. Aircon controls are screenbased. Um, but there are various swipes you can do to get easy access to all of those without having to take your eyes off the road. And then we’ve also got a nice clear driver information display. Um, it is a little bit cluttered. There’s a lot going on in quite a small space. Um, but it does the job perfectly well. The steering wheel itself is nice and comfortable and as I said, having physical buttons there means that you quickly get used to where they are and you can do the the easy things like changing your volume and things like that without taking your eyes off the road. Now, if you do take your eyes off the road, this little beauty over here is going to tell you about it very quickly because the the driver awareness recognition thing in this car uh is very keen. It’s very keen to tell me what a bad driver I am. Um, and it’s told me a couple of times in in a really short distance that I’m tired and I’m taking my eyes off the road and all this kind of stuff when it I don’t feel like I have been if I’m being completely honest. So, that does seem very sensitive and I will be turning that off for the rest of my journey. Just something to bear in mind. Seat comfort’s good. This one’s got electronically controlled adjustments. Um, and that’s all quite nice. However, I can’t find a lower lumbar support. Um, I haven’t spent a lot of time with the car, but I can’t find a lower lumbar support, and I like a lower lumbar support. We’ve got a couple of cup holders here, and then you’ve got a physical volume button. You’ve got an EV to hybrid button in case you ever wanted to run the car as a full EV. Uh, and then you’ve got your driving modes and things. Um, and your start stop button. We’ve then got our wireless charging pad over here, um, which only seems to be on one side. As I said, that is a maximum 50 kW charging pad and it is cooled, but I’d have liked to have seen wireless charging available on the other side as well. Um, and then we’ve got quite a sizable cubby in here underneath. Now, underneath this center console, we do find a big space and you’ve got some USBC’s down there and a 12watt socket. I should also mention uh that your drive selector is up here on this stalk and everything else is on this one. So, your wiper controls, um flashing your headlights, all that sort of stuff’s all on this one. And your indicators, of course. All in all, it’s a a conservative interior, but you certainly don’t feel like you’re lacking for anything. And it does have a nice feeling of um quiet refinement, I would say. I like it. In the back here, you’ve got bags of leg room. like I’ve got that much leg room with that in my normal driving position. Um, we do have the big pano roof in this one. And you’ve got a couple of USBCs down here. What I’m lacking for a bit is tow room because there’s very little underneath that seat in front. So, it does mean you’re going to probably sit like this rather than in a more natural uh seating position perhaps. Um, but otherwise it feels nice. Again, seat comfort and the quality of the material feels very good. We’ve got a nice big squishy central armrest. Uh some headrests, um which are nice if you want to relax in here, but they do restrict the rear visibility a bit when you’re in the driver’s seat. Uh you you have also got a 360 pano camera in this one. And in all cars, you’ve at least got a reversing camera. So hopefully that’s not too much of an issue. But yeah, if you’ve got the headrest up, it certainly does obscure that rear vision a bit. Uh, as a rear cabin goes, no major gripes in here. There’s nothing particularly clever going on. Um, but it does feel roomy. It does feel spacious. If that um pan roof is open, which had to close because of the glare from the sun, unbelievably in November, um, it also feels nice and bright and airy in here. It’s nice to get a light interior as well. Okay, folks. So, you’ve seen the rest of the video. I’ve driven that car for about an hour and I’ve now swapped into a saloon version of the car. Um, which is actually the lower spec and therefore I’m losing a little bit of BHP. I’m losing a bit of all electric range and a bit of naugh 62 time. And I can tell you I would go for the higher spec version of the car. And I’m not usually the person that would do that. I like to see the value in something. And I actually think the value in this car, the the best value, despite it being £3,000 more expensive, is that higher trim level. I would go for the comfort if I was specking this. And I dare say the £3,000 difference in price um once it comes to a a lease is going to be minute quite possibly. And I dare say a lot of people getting this car will be leasing it. So, uh, if you’re in two minds which one to go for just based on an hour’s driving today, uh, I would go for the comfort because first thing is you don’t hear the engine very often when you go for the comfort. It’s only if you’re really laboring it going up a hill or something or you’re trying to do maybe an overtake. Um you won’t hear the engine very often and it feels like the right amount of power I guess for the car. It doesn’t feel like the most powerful car in the world, but um it does quite a good job of feeling like an EV. And if you’ve driven an EV before, there’s a lot of good things about the EV driving experience. Don’t shoot me if you’ve got a V8. With this version of the car, you’re losing out on the electric range. You’re losing out on being able to charge at what is it? 6 and a half kW. I think this one’s 3.3 kW maximum rate of charge. And you can’t ever DC charge it. Not that I could imagine DC charging a plug-in hybrid too often. Um, but you’re also missing out on things like the 18inch wheels, uh, a few nicities in the cabin, the 360 camera, which is very, very good. And I think as an all round value proposition, for the sake of three grand, it would almost be foolish not to get the bigger battery and the extra spec. This car drives very well in 95% of situations. Um, you’ll find it smooth. You’ll find it nice and quiet inside the cabin. It generally feels very refined until you get to a really rough bit of road. And when you’re on a really rough bit of road, it does feel a bit skittish. Like it is a bit busy. It’s perhaps not as shore-footed as it is on a nice smooth surface. And it feels like, you know, it may have been designed for European roads more than it’s been designed for British roads. Uh, however, I will just caveat that by saying that some of the cars here today are not final UK specs. I don’t know if if that’s just down to the option boxes that have been ticked or um actually if they’ll be making some tweaks to things like the suspension uh for the UK. Um, as always folks, you can watch all the car reviews in the world and read all the reviews in the world, but the only opinion that matters is your own. So, I strongly suggest you go and test drive any car before you uh sign up on the dotted line for one. Um, but this is definitely worth a test drive because for me the positives far outweigh any negatives. Uh, I’m really impressed with the car to be completely honest. Of course, the closest rivals to this car will be um the plug-in hybrid version of the Scoda Superb and the VW Pat. Um, and they’re both very good. They’re both very compelling cars, but this offers quite a lot of the same and possibly a wee bit more in terms of spec uh for a much lower price. So, I think it’s well worth test driving all the cars and seeing which one you prefer and then seeing if if the price difference actually is worth it to you. you might find it’s not. Apologies if this sun has made the lighting in this video particularly problematic. Um it is um mid November afternoon and uh the sun is in exactly the wrong place and it is quite bright. Um lovely if you’re just out for a drive. If you’re trying to film a YouTube video and you’ve got limited skills and one set of arms is a little bit problematic. So, there we go folks. I hope you’ve enjoyed that first look at the BYD Seal 6.
