Xiaomi YU7 aka China’s Electric Ferrari – The Hype is Real…

[Music] hell. Wow. This car is a little bit a little bit crazy. Xiaomi, maker of smartphones, televisions, even robot vacuum cleaners, and apparently also really good EVs. Welcome to ev.com. So, welcome back to the show. Before we get started, don’t forget to give us a like and a subscribe. I have to tell you guys today, I am a little bit excited with the EV we have. This is the Xiaomi U7, and unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you will know the hype behind this car. It’s only the brand’s second car, but on launch, it sold 300,000 pre-orders. That’s how much people wanted to get their hands on one of these. And if you ordered one, you would have to wait up to a year for a delivery of your vehicle. Xiaomi can’t make them quickly enough. But I have one today to share with you. And I have to say the hype behind this EV may be fully justified. It may be the closest to perfect EV that I have driven today. So without further ado, let’s get into it. It’s super impressive to think this is only the brand’s second model after their sous 7 sedan which perhaps quite closely resembled a Porsche tyan. Well, familiar looking design seems to be the name of the game with Xiaomi because this U7 we have here. Yes, very strong pure sanguay vibes. Although I would say this is less aggressive and less sharp edges, more rounded and kind of like a more familyfriendly a vibe while still being a little bit sporty. And of course, it has incorporated some of the Xiaomi design language. So the front does look familiar. We have these lights which we saw before, although these ones have been kind of like evolved. So now they actually have an airflow which goes through here and out the top. And this vehicle also has some very nice carbon fiber trim on it. So, this is actually the top trim of the vehicle. In person, this vehicle looks very, very sleek. But it’s not just looks. This car actually has an incredible amount of tech and practicality, which I will get on to a little bit later. So, a great first impression there at the front. If we move down the side here, we have a lot of this kind of black shiny cladding along the side of the car around the wheel arches and at the bottom. This helps really to bring in the shape, bring in the size of this car. It might look small, but this car is actually bigger than a Tesla Model Y in every dimension except its height. We have some very interesting door handles here. So, these ones a bit lowkey. I was afraid they were going to nip my fingers off when I first started using them, but it hasn’t happened yet. Wheels 19, 20, or 21 in. These ones we have today are 21 in, so you’d have to pay extra for these. And if we come to the back, we have the party piece here. So, we have not one but two spoilers here. one here at the roof and one little duct tail down here. These are not just for show. The top trim of this vehicle has a naugh to 100 of 3.23 seconds. And actually, the rear visibility on this car is not bad at all. And that’s good because it doesn’t have a digital rear view mirror. This kind of light signature at the back is what we’re used to, what we’ve seen before on the Sue 7. So, regarding the exterior look, there’s no two ways about it. It is very copycat. You know, Xiaomi did this with their first car. They did it with their second car as well. This type of thing used to really annoy me. Why do these brands who are so good at innovating in terms of tech, in terms of user experience, sell themselves short with designs that are derivative of other more well-known models. You know, we have this car here. We have the Xiaomi Sue 7, which very much resembled a tyan. Well, as in its dimensions, we had the Zika color 9. I was going to call it the Zika 9X, which is basically an electric Rolls-Royce Cullinin. But now I’m beginning to understand why they do it. You know, if you look at Xiaomi’s recent phone release, they released a 17 Pro Max exactly the same time the iPhone released a 17 Pro Max. And the phones did look quite similar. Is this copycat? A little bit, at least on the surface. But actually, when you go beneath the surface of these products, they are so different. And in the case of this product here, the tech and innovation underneath it really is miles ahead. So these kind of designs get people in the door. They draw people in. But it’s the tech, innovation, user experience that make people fall in love with Xiaomi’s products. And this EV here is no exception. So as mentioned already, the U7 has a slightly longer wheelbase. It is longer and slightly wider, very slightly wider than a Tesla Model Y. Coincidence? I think probably not. The same with something like a Zika X. With the exception of the height, it’s slightly bigger in all dimensions. And while it doesn’t look like your typical SUV shape, it does have a great amount of practicality, such as we have an electrically opening frunk. So, despite this being a dual motor vehicle, we actually have a massive size frunk, 141 LERs, which blows the Model Y’s 117 L out the water. This is great. And we do have a little plug here so we can drain the water out. But whatever you do, do not put your children or your dog in this frunk. Many people have pointed out the difficulty in ma manufacturing this kind of clam shell hood. how all of the lines edges need to match up perfectly, otherwise this is going to look bad. It’s not going to fit. Well, I think this shows the confidence that Xiaomi has in its manufacturing. Anyway, I’m glad they did it. It looks amazing. What do you think of the design of the Xiaomi U7? Make sure you let us know in the comments below. And a very, very decent size boot here. So, 678 L, expandable to 1,758 L. This second row can be folded down electronically, folds down flat as well. So, the looks of a Ferrari, but actually the practicality of well, of a Xiaomi. So, it’s got the looks to draw a crab, but does it have everything where it counts inside? Let’s go take a look. So, the interior of the U7, is it minimalist? Yes, but I think it’s minimalist in a good way. Minimalist doesn’t mean nothing to look at. We have some really nice designs here. Some great shapes. Some different uses of materials that kind of break up the look of the interior here. Loads of soft touch. Alcantara on the top here. Leather on the seats. Soft touch materials absolutely everywhere. Over here, this steering wheel, we have this kind of kind of very racing style steering wheel actually. Carbon fiber up the top. Alantara on the sides. We have our driving modes here. And we have our autonomous function button here on the left. Not too much going on on the steering wheel. I like that. the opposite approach to something like a BYD where they overload you with the buttons. In the middle here, we have these kind of two cup holders that can be raised or down as you see fit. And then we have a central storage unit here. I was a little bit upset cuz I thought, where do I put my sunglasses? There isn’t a place. Well, they actually have a little shelf inside this box here just for them. Although, no charging here. Charging will be down the bottom underneath the center unit here. So, it is very quick and easy to understand Xiaomi’s expertise in the user experience. They’ve been creating phones and household items for many, many years. They understand what users want. You’re right. They have not built many electric cars before, but the electric car is different and requires a different approach. So, how do Xiaomi implement their incredible knowledge of user experience into their vehicles? Well, well, they give you a great experience, but they know that not everyone is the same. So, they let you adjust and customize the experience for you. So, starting with the Xiaomi Hyper HUD, 1.1 m wide, so across almost the whole of the cabin. It’s difficult to figure out what this is when you see it on a video. Basically, it’s just a kind of HUD, but instead of having clear glass to project onto, it projects onto some glass which has been given a film. We weren’t really getting anywhere with the HUDs, were we? They tried AR HUDs. They tried very bright ones you supposedly can see on a sunny day, but you really couldn’t. So, this is a really good solution to a problem. So, across here, we have our driving mode, our distance, our navigation, but we can customize all of these different widgets the way we want to. So, if you want to put our music up there, if you want to put the weather up there, if you want to put whatever we want to put up there, it can be customized accordingly. We can even choose our own little cute assistant. I bet you didn’t know you needed that on a car, did you? So, a 16.3 in 3K screen here. I think we’re getting to the limit of the screen size, which is good to see. Of course, we can customize this in whatever way we want with the apps, with the programs. You know, Xiaomi is a phone maker. They have the chips. They know how to make user experience. This is very fast and very intuitive. Of course, it’s a Xiaomi product, so it integrates seamlessly into the Xiaomi ecosystem, which could include a number of products inside your home. I know Xiaomi is a global brand. I have a robot vacuum cleaner. I have lots of Xiaomi lights and Xiaomi rice cookers. You can set up lots of scenarios, lots of automation between this vehicle here and your home. So this could be something like when my vehicle gets within 5 kilometers of my house, turn on my rice cooker, turn on my air fryer, get the dinner cooking, so when you arrive at home, everything is ready to eat. Or vice versa, if you’re in your house in the morning, a sensor when you open your door could begin the heating up process or cooling down process of your car’s air conditioning. So when you get into your car, everything is exactly how you want it to be. The list really is endless. You can also adjust the hardware on your infotainment system, too. So, so we have the option of adding a row of physical buttons to the bottom here. So, the argument, do we want physical buttons? Do we not? You can decide for yourself. We don’t need to argue about it anymore. Some people like the clean look, some people like quick access to essential buttons. Well, now the choice is yours. Would you have the buttons or not? Make sure you let us know in the comments below. We also have these fixtures all over the place. These are magnetic and can be fitted with Xiaomi accessories. They can also have a charge run through, so you can have your phone here and it can charge as well. We have dual 80 watt wireless charging pads here. A massive glove box, heated and ventilated seats in the front as well as a heated steering wheel. And we also have massaging. So 10point massage in the seats here. Both front seats also have zero gravity as well. So the interior of the U7, I think it has some personality actually, especially in this dual color scheme we have here today. They’ve definitely done more than they needed with it. And although it’s minimalist, you don’t really feel like there’s nothing going on. So in the back and the seating situation in the back of the U7 is actually pretty good. I reckon it’s probably better than the Ferrari as well. So we do have a celltobody structure for the battery which does give us some more interior space. My seat is in my driver’s position actually a little bit further back. My legs are not touching. Headroom is close. I probably got an inch or two uh there. But the seats are very plush and very comfortable. All three of these seats are heated which is very nice. We do have the ability to adjust them electronically up to 35°. In the middle here, we have not really much. Couple of drinks holders, somewhere your phone. No charging there, though. We got some more practical touches. We actually have a drawer underneath this seat here. And we have a fridge. You know, we’ve got to have a fridge in your car, right? So, this can be adjusted from two to 15° here. And then we have this can be removed a kind of Xiaomi phone which can be used for uh adjusting things like the temperature here in the back or the entertainment. So this I’m not really sure about. I feel like this could get lost. This could get broken. I feel like if it was stuck here, it’s kind of safe. But the moment you can remove something is when it can uh disappear. Let us know what you think about that in the comments. We do have an incredible large panoramic roof. So, this sunroof has been triple layer silvercoated. I don’t know what the significance of that is, but I know that it does keep out almost all of the heat and almost all of the UV rays. This one here can actually dim as well. Takes around 3 minutes to do that, but once again, Xiaomi is letting you decide. Do you want to have the sunroof or not? Why choose when you can have both? So, the driving experience of the U7 is actually incredibly versatile. So, we have air suspension on the higher trims which give us a very very comfortable ride if you want to put it in economy or comfort mode. It feels very very comfortable. It’s uh very very uh easy car to get along with. We have a double wishbone suspension at the front and five link at the rear. But, and it’s a big butt, the driving experience is very engaging and sporty. Can you hear that? So, as we can see, oh man, this uh sports mode is no joke, man. Yeah, I don’t think I can drive it sports mode around the city. This drive is very engaging. The pedal is very, very sensitive in sports mode. The steering as well is extremely engaging. The car even generates this kind of electronic engine sound, electronic kind of uh RPM just to give you the kind of sensation that you’re driving well driving a Ferrari. Eh, to add to this the view we get from the driver’s seat. It’s an SUV, but we are quite low and we can see the two hunches at the front of the car and this kind of adds to the sportiness that this car gives. So, in this Max version, we have 508 kW of power, 866 new meters of torque. That’s naugh to 100 km an hour in 3.23 seconds. This is quite a lot of power. There is a rear wheel drive only version as well as a lower powered four-wheel drive version. This Max model has a 101.7 NMC battery good for 760 km. So driving it around the last couple of days, I’ve averaged 15 kwatt hours per 100 kilometers. That’s not the most efficient number we’ve ever seen. I think it’s good for a car of this size. It’s an SUV as well, and they do have big batteries, so it still means you you get a good range from the Xiaomi U7. One other nice little thing this has is a new driver mode. So when you get your 800 horsepower Xiaomi U7 and start driving, you don’t crash it immediately into a wall. So the accelerator is extremely nerfed as well as the steering. So you can’t go killing yourself or anyone else, which is a great idea. [Music] hell. Wow. This car is a little bit a little bit crazy. I’ve said this previously which is that you know I see vehicles their last bastion their last hope is clinging on to this kind of driving experience. You know some of the EVs we see so coming out of China perhaps their tech and more on creating a you know a living room space inside the car and they don’t really have a lot in the way of an interesting drive. But that’s changing. This company only made phones until a couple of years ago. I just I can’t get my head around that. All of the hype around this car, I feel it’s really justified. And those 300,000 orders this car received, I think it’s going to be 300,000 happy customers. NOA, uh, which I’m not going to test today. So, this is the car’s autonomous functions and a Thor driver assistance chip, 700 tops, including a liar unit. So, this is city and highway urban driving. I mean, this car very clearly has impressed me and um I’m trying to find something wrong with it. Well, there’s one thing, the annoying navigation noises. I think if Xiaomi keep producing vehicles like this, all of the other brands are going to be in a bit of trouble. I think it’s just as well some countries are keeping cars like this at arms length with things like tariffs. Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, famously drove a Sous7 around Detroit and absolutely love it. Can you imagine what he would think of something like this? Your own electric Ferrari for a fraction of the price. What do you think of the Xiaomi U7? Do you want this car in your market now? Do you want to buy one tomorrow? Well, get in line. Make sure you give us a like and a subscribe. I’ll see you next time.
