This Electric MTB Is Way Better Than I Thought (Magician Atlas Review)
All right, guys. It’s a new day, new review. Got the Magician Atlas in front of me. This is probably more powerful than you guys would think, and it’s probably going to be cheaper than you guys think with all the components this thing has on it. It’s actually the cheapest Buffang mid drive mountain bike right now on the market. Let’s get into it. Isn’t this bike just lovely to look at? Now, maybe I’m biased because blue is my favorite color, and I mean, they sent me a blue one, so I’m more than ecstatic. But if you guys don’t like this blue, you guys can order it in black. That’s the only other color they have on it. Uh they also have two frame models. So this is the 17, so it’s a little bit smaller. You can get the 19 as well, but I would only get the 19 if you were pushing 6 ft and more. But I still feel like some people that are right at 6T could probably benefit from the 17. But real quick, there’s a lot to cover. So the first and most important thing we got to talk about is this huge Black Friday sale that’s going on for 2025. They have $600 off of this bike using my discount code. Everything will be down in the description. Uh it’s going to be about $19.99. That is if you guys are watching this video right now. If you guys are watching this in 2026, the price might have changed, might went up a little bit, but just verify that information. Again, everything’s down in the description. The first thing you’re going to get, you’re going to get fenders on this bike. You’re going to get them completely for free. And you’re also going to get a free rack in the back as well. That’s like a $200 value. The biggest and most important thing, and I think this is something you guys got to consider if you guys are wanting to order this bike, order it now. They’re going to give you a wheel set, 29in wheel set. You’re going to get rims and tires. You’re going to get a whole brand new setup. So, you’re going to have these on the bike and another set. So, not only is that awesome because if you get a flat in the front or the back, you could just switch that out and you could be riding again and then wait until your tube comes in to fill the other one. Now, let’s get into the components of this thing cuz we got a lot to talk about. First and foremost is this motor right here. The Buffang motor that comes on this thing is the G510. It puts up to about 1,500 watts of peak power and delivers 160 new m of torque. Now, to get all that torque, it’s obviously going to depend on what gear you’re in. You have nine speeds back here from the ShraMM X5, and it’s going to be an absolutely awesome system. It also has a motor cutout, so every time you switch gears, it’s not going to ruin your cassette back here or anything like that. And keep in mind, this is a mid drive, so it’s not going to be super quiet. It’s not a hub driven motor. But I love this setup because most of the weight is right here. And this bike is going to feel really well balanced. And once we get on the road, I really think you guys are going to be impressed by the power that this thing puts out. Now, I like this piece right here that’s on top of the sprocket. It keeps the chain from going back and forth. So, your chain’s probably not going to fly all over the place and hit the frame way over here. I do like that you have this little rubber piece right here. So, when your chain does come down, which it will depending on how you ride, it’s not going to mess up your paint. Now, you might want to put a little piece right here cuz I think that’s going to help. You might also want to put some up here if you’re a little bit more concerned about your paint. Probably not going to see it up here, but you would definitely see it here. So, I like that they put that on there. And also, I noticed the teeth on the sprocket are different. Now, I’m probably not going to be able to show this on camera, but you can see how the chain has a big opening. Small, big, small. Now, the teeth on here, it’s big, small, big, small. That’s really going to keep your chain on there, and it’s not going to fall off at all. Moving on up from that, look at the linkage on this bike. Now, you can see the shock goes right through where the seat post would go. Keep in mind, this is as low as your seat will actually go down. You could order a different seat post if you want, if you wanted to go way, way down here because it does get blocked by this shock right here. By the way, this is a rock shock. You do have a lockout that you could do right here. You also have a rebound adjustment on this red little knob right here to get it dialed down where you want. You also have an air valve right here so you can get it dialed in exactly how you want your ride to be. This to me is a fantastic rear shock and linkage system for a bike this price. Now, one cool thing about this bike is if you want to add a dropper post, it does have the ports right here. So, you would run the cable from here, go into here, come out from the top right here, and then put the button right up here. That would be an extra accessory you have to buy yourself, but I like the fact that they have it set up for that already. They also have this right here on the frame if you want to put a water bottle holder. And then right below that is where you charge the bike if you don’t want to take the battery out. The charger included with this bike is 3 amps. It came with a very cool accessory box. Came with the manual right here. Came with a bunch of tools. Also came with badass pedals. These are actually aluminum. These aren’t plastic like I get on most of my ebikes. But be careful of your shins right here cuz these are really pointy. Now, when you get your bike in, the keys will be right up here. And I’m going to take these off because I want to show you guys the battery. And I could be wrong, but I think this little thing right here is when you shift is how it tells it to cut the power of the bike. I’ve never seen anything like this on a shifter cable. All right. Well, anyways, let’s get this battery off. So, to lock it, you turn it to the right. To unlock it, you turn it to the left. Then, you have a little knob right above the battery that you pop off to the left hand side, and the battery comes out. Now, the battery might be a little bit more difficult when you do have fenders on this bike, but just get the tire out of the way the best as possible. It actually has some decent clearance, but it might rub. Now, looking at the battery, there’s really nothing to see on it. Has one little label on this side that says 52 volt 20 amp hour. Up here, it’s written into the battery, 52 volt, 20 amp hour. It does say it’s ULcertified, so that’s nice to know. And if you wanted to know the batteries in here, they’re using Samsung cells. And if for whatever reason you wanted to charge this battery off of the bike, this is the charging port. So you can bring it inside your house, depending if you live upstairs and you can’t bring your bike with you up there, this is where you would charge it at. And if you decide to do that, they gave you a nice button right here that will light up green when it is fully charged or red if it’s dead. Now, we haven’t even got to talk about the brakes or the suspension in the front. So we got 203 millimeter rotors up here, and these are pretty thick rotors. They’re not going to warp or anything like that. They’re going to last you a pretty decently long time. These are G2 brakes. They’re hydraulic. They’re using mineral oil and they’re four piston. You got the KK inverted shock right here. And this is a 140 mm travel. Underneath you got a little air valve so you can put your correct air pressure in there to get the best riding possible out of the front suspension. And by the way, you have a through axle on the front. So just in case you get a flat, that’s going to make it super easy and it also brings the weight down. On top of the right side of the suspension, you get a compression adjustment. On that same side underneath, you get a rebound adjustment. Now, with everything on the softest setting, that’s how the suspension moves in the front. And this is how the suspension moves in the rear. And this is kind of how the whole suspension moves as whole. I’m 165 lbs. Keep in mind, so I don’t have a whole lot of weight to push this thing down. And also, I’m 5’9. Look at my feet. I can’t flat foot this bike even with the seat on the lowest setting. So, that’s going to be a little difficult for people that want to get this bike under 5’9. But, you can always change out the seat post with something or cut this one in half and it will slide down all the way to the bottom. And you’ll probably get like that much more out of the bike to sit more lower. So, last but not least, I want to show you guys the menu of this bike. So, let’s turn the bike on. You hold the power button right here. It’s going to say magician on the screen. It’s going to take a little bit to come up. You can see that we have our time of the day right there. You have voltage or battery percent depends on what you want. I changed it to voltage earlier. Our max speed in sports mode because this is a sports mode display. You can go up to 60 miles an hour. It will probably look a little different. You go in the custom settings and change that. I’ll show you in a second how you do that. Your trip right now, I’ve been riding it for 3 miles. I took it around my neighborhood just kind of test it out, get a feel for it. We’re in mode unlimited. If you want to go up in pedal assist, you just go like this. Go all the way up to five. You got your throttle enabled. You can get rid of your throttle if you don’t want the throttle on. And to get into the menu system, we got to hit the I button twice. Display settings is what it’s called, actually. Hit the I button again. You could change the units from imperial to metric. We’re imperial. You can change the brightness of the display. You could change the auto off. So when you leave your bike sit for a second, you got your mode region. So if you’re in Canada or US modes, you have unlimited or you can go to class one depending on your area. Class 2, class 3. I’m going to stay in unlimited cuz I want the most power possible. The power view is what you saw how the display was earlier before we got into this menu. You can put it to the current that it was originally shipped out with or go into the power. I like the power one. Here’s where you could change your battery from voltage to percentage. I leave it on voltage cuz I like to read voltage. Your wheel comes at 26 in, but realistically to get the actual uh speed out of the display, I’d go to 29 in cuz these are some huge tires. And then speed limit is set to 56. I think we can go up to 60. I it’s not going to go that fast, but we’re going to change it to that. Then you have your sensitivity right here. You can change that from three. I believe you can go all the way up to is it five? And then you can turn it off. We’re going to leave it where it was. Your max pedal assist is going to be uh from 1, five, or nine. And that’s how many modes you have. So I’m just going to leave it in five. You can set a password. You could hit the clock set and then you can just go back. And then the other information is basically your battery info. Will tell you everything about it. And uh it might take a second to pop up cuz nothing’s popping up right now. And also error codes. So, if you get error codes on this thing, it will tell you what it is. You can search for it online or if you contact the company, you got to send them an email. It’s easy for them to diagnose what the issue is on your bike. And that’s pretty much it for the settings. There’s no password, no nothing, which is nice. So, now I think it is time to get out here for a ride to see how this thing rips. It’s been a while since we’ve been in the garage. So, let’s go out there and have some fun. All right, we’re in mode one right now. About to leave my neighborhood. And uh yeah, this thing’s nice. Nice and smooth. Decent power. I don’t even know what gear we’re in or anything. And I mean, the way it feels right now feels really nice. It maybe has a little bit of a lag, so we’re probably not in the right gear. We’re probably in a taller gear. But this feels really good power. I’ve been riding around for a little bit and I got it down to the gear in the back and I’m going to show you guys what gear that is. So, it’s all the way on the biggest one in the rear. That’s going to give you your most torque possible. That’s not going to give you your highest top speed. This one down here is going to give you your top speed, but it’s not going to give you the torque. So, it’s all going to depend on you. Thinking about a stick shift car, that’s actually how this thing feels. It’s like you have to shift it depend on what RPM, what gear you want to be, how fast you want to go, the torque, and all that stuff. If you start in second gear in a car, it’s not going to take off as fast as the first gear. You know what I’m saying? So, it’s pretty cool. Check out the torque of this bike when it’s in the proper gear and we’re sitting at 0 milesPH. So, here we 1 2 3 I I got to hold on to the handlebars. I mean, we hit 15 m an hour right off the bat. That is absolutely insane. Right, we’re in unlimited mode. We’re in mode number five right here. And I also changed my wheel diameter, remember, in the settings to 29 in. And that matches up with GPS. So, make sure to do that first off when you get this because if you don’t do that, it won’t read correctly. This will actually show probably like 10 or 11 and you think you’re going slower than you actually are. Just in case rules and laws are a huge thing where you stay at. So anyways, let’s shift gears and you can see the power cuts off and then it hits the next gear and it just pulls like mad after that and it hits about 21 mph. We’re going to shift into another gear. That power comes on again and that’s going to take us up probably about 24. You shift again. It’s getting slower and slower as we kind of creep up into the gears and all that kind of stuff, but it still goes decently fast. This thing should do probably about like a little bit over 30 m an hour, but it will take a little bit of time to get there because you have to go through all the gears. Another thing you got to think about too is if you come to a complete stop and you don’t shift your gears down, it’s actually going to take off real slow. So, I’m going to show you that really quick and I’m going to pull over here. We are not in the optional gear for this thing to take off. So, here we go. We’re at a light right now. Went across the street. You You could use the pedals or you could use the throttle. Here we go. Here’s the throttle. It still has good torque, you know, but it’s not in the right gear, so it didn’t take off as fast as it originally did. Now, if you’re lazy, you can always just do that. You’re not going to mess anything up. But, if you want the most torque out of this bike at all times, you’re definitely going to want to drop the gears all the time. So, you’re either going to love or hate that. It’s not something I personally like to do, but I kind of like the fact that I’m in control of how fast and how torquy this bike is and what the top speed is. I feel like there’s so many different combinations of what you can do on this bike on how you want to ride. And I’m really impressed with how comfortable it is. I mean, it handles so damn good, especially with these big fat tires on here. You got tread on the actual side of the tire, which is lovely. It just makes it so much easier for you to uh not know that you’re going to slip out when you hit a corner. Like here, here’s some pieces of wood. Oh, I was going to hit it, but I didn’t. I chickenened out a little bit. Now, at first, I thought this was an issue. Every single time I kind of played with the pedals a little bit. I didn’t know if the pedals had play in them or if it was the crank arms connected to the motor, but this is completely normal. So, if you do feel a little bit of play when you’re moving the pedals at a standstill, don’t worry about it. Uh, just something I wanted to mention while riding. And by the way, my feet, I mean, these shoes aren’t really made for, you know, these pedals, but they’re sticking on there really good. I like it. Now, I’m pretty positive you guys have been hearing the motor a little bit while riding. And honestly, it’s quieter than I thought it was going to be. I actually kind of really like the noise of this motor. Sounds pretty cool. Like going around and when it shifts, it just it sounds like a car. I absolutely kind of dig it. And it also kind of lets your presence be known that you’re behind them on the trail or coming around a corner if you’re in the forest going through some stuff, you know. Um, and it’s not obnoxiously loud at all. It’s actually way more quiet than I thought. But it also depends on what gear you’re in. So, if I shift gears, and you hear it right now, maybe it sounds as loud still, but let me go to the correct gears so you guys can hear it. So, I’ll drop down two gears. And now listen to it. While I use the pedals, we’re holding about 26 25. and you don’t really hear that motor as much. Now, I forgot to bring my gloves on today’s ride. Uh, something I definitely should have brought. Um, but I do want to point out that the grips are absolutely really grippy. Love them. My hands are sticking on there. They’re planted. They’re also locking as well. So, really love that. The brakes are nice as well. These little tiny handles, I love them. They’re good for like one finger. And when you do push them, it does cut your motor power and all that stuff. And it’s instant. It is really, really quick. Another thing too that I noticed is that you do have a little bit of adjustment little screws on the front. Now, they feel plastic and they’re a little hard to maneuver, but once you kind of adjust it, you can actually pull the brake lever into the grip or you can push it out away from you just depending on how you like that feeling. So, I adjust it right off the bat and I am loving this setup right now. Something I am trying to get used to is a thumb throttle on the left hand side, but bikes like this always normally have a thumb throttle on the lefth hand side because they have your gear mechanism over here. I’m just so used to riding on electric mopeds where you don’t have a gear system. And that’s pretty much all there is to look at on this bike other than the display. I mean, the display is colored, which is nice. Not black and white like some other ones. U but there’s nothing crazy going on. It’s nice for what it is. The voltage is biggest thing ever. Like I’m glad they have the voltage reading on here. Oh. All right. Well, I was going to do a little bit of off-roading for you guys, but my back is absolutely blasted with mud because it’s been raining the last seven days, so we’re not going to be able to go out there. That’s probably why they’re not working today cuz it’s not the weekend. Anyways, um yeah, we got this bike completely covered and I wasn’t in the right gear, so it actually didn’t push me through it. So, I had to put my feet in it as well. So, man, that was lovely. Um I’ll just clean myself when I get home. Next thing I want to do is a braking test. So, we’re going to try to get up to about 28 m an hour. I think we’re going to reach it right here. That’s good enough. Here we go. 1 2 3. Wa! Brakes are phenomenal. Check out the last bike I did. Look how far it went. I believe that was the Valenzu EM5, I believe. That is crazy. That brakes so damn good. Very, very impressed. All right, so we should be able to ride in this. This isn’t going to be as loose as it normally is cuz all the rain. But, uh, let’s ride out here for a little bit cuz I want to show you guys the hill performance of this thing. It’s probably going to blow your damn mind on how good this thing is going to climb. All right, are you guys ready for this? Now, I might even have to switch gears. I don’t know. I think what we’re going to do is we’re going to try gear one and then go to gear number two and let’s see what the difference is because it’s going to cut our power halfway going up when I hit 15 miles an hour. I know it’s going to hit 15 miles an hour. So, here we go. 1 2 3. Oh my god, this thing climbs. Oh, okay. Actually, no, it didn’t. Stayed at about 13 m an hour coming up that thing. Still, it felt like it was just constantly like climbing. No issues. A little slower than I expected, but it was consistent and it felt like it just had the power to back it up going up that hill. All right, so let’s try the next gear I was talking about. One, two, three. Okay. Oh, yeah. It’s still climbing. Still has the power. Oh, there we go. Now we’re reaching. All right. So, almost 15 m an hour. We started in a uh smaller gear in the back and it actually climbed not as fast, but we were gaining speed. I am still very impressed the fact that we’re out in some gravel right now. And when I hit the brakes, I mean, it just stops. Like, it’s absolutely insane how well this thing breaks. I don’t think I’ve had a bike to this date until now that has stopped that good. How’s it going, guys? All those people back there taking pictures, which is a great time to do. The sun’s setting. It’s kind of later in the day and this thing does not bad at night because it is not an electric dirt bike. Everyone was giving me nods. Everyone was in a good mood. I feel like if I was coming through on my dirt bike, I mean, maybe it could be the same. I don’t want to judge it, but I mean, when you look at this thing, you just see electric mountain bike. That’s all you see. You probably don’t even know that it’s electric until you really look at it close or you hear the slight motor when you’re passing by. or they could tell because I wasn’t pedaling to begin with. But if I was pedaling, I don’t know if they would even know. Now, something I wanted to show you guys is if let’s say you’re doing like 20 and you like downshift into a lower gear, you’re going to hear that motor spinning, but nothing moving. You’re just in the wrong gear. And that’s because that gear can’t keep up with how fast you’re going. So, uh, that’s just something to note. At first, I was like, what’s going on? I thought something disconnected, like the chain popped off. But you’re just in the wrong gear. and then get in the right gear and it will take off again. Now, I really really wish I had some places to take this bike because around me I have nothing. But, uh, I can show you how I climbed that just now. I mean, that’s crazy. Like, there was no effort to that whatsoever. I just had to be in the right gear. This bike is cool, man. This bike would be cool to blast down some trails in the forest, mountains, whatever, going up stuff. That’s where this bike would shine. And because there’s no lights on this bike, and something I totally forgot to tell you guys is that you do get a light kit for this bike. Now, I don’t exactly know what type of light kit it is, but you will get one. But because I don’t have any lights on this bike, we won’t be riding it at night. So, what I will do is try to do another video when it’s not so muddy of this bike and we’ll go definitely take it like off-road and see how it performs out in the dirt. So, that’s what I really really want to do. It’s just way too muddy. I keep shifting into the wrong gear. There we go. I also had to adjust the shifter when I got this bike because I actually came bent. Um, so I tried to bend it the best way as possible. I actually can’t get it into the smallest gear in the back just because it’s slightly offset. All the other gears worked, but before none of them worked other than the talls gear. So, I got some of it fixed out, but this is a solid bike. It was really, really comfortable. The seat is actually more comfortable than what I thought it was. Still not as comfortable as like a moped style seat, but I mean it has memory foam in it. It’s really really nice. It has a nice design and I just can’t believe like how trashed this bike is. I really did not expect to get this bike that dirty. It’s crazy. Well, since we’re towards the end of this video, what I’m going to do is I’m going to let you guys know the voltage, but then I’m going to switch the voltage back into percentage to see what the bike is telling us and see if that matches up with our chart. Right now, I have exactly 9 mi since I charged this battery, and we’re sitting at 54.1 volt. I’m going to go into the settings. Let’s see if you can do the settings while rolling. And no, you cannot. So, you can’t get into the settings while rolling. You actually have to come to a complete stop. Then, you should be able to go into the settings. Let’s go into this. Let’s go into voltage. Let’s change that to percentage. Let’s go all the way down to back and exit. And the bike is telling me we’re at 78% with me riding 9 miles. So that’s pretty good. I would say that’s actually really fantastic. That’s telling me I can get roughly almost 40 mi of range with being 165 lbs. And again, this bike isn’t crazy crazy fast, but it has the torque and power to pick you up anything. The way this bike is set up, that mid drive buff motor, it is absolutely astonishing. It just surprised me on how fast it picks you up. If you’re in the right gear, it is really, really quick. The only thing is is, are you going to enjoy always having to shift gears? Some people don’t. If you’re more of a casual guy and you don’t like that, this is not going to be the bike for you. If you are under probably 5’6, probably not going to be the bike for you unless you modify the seat post or order a new one. But I would definitely order it now if you guys are thinking about it because you guys get tons of accessories with this bike. pretty much like a $600 value of accessories and it’s coming in at $19.99 and that sun is so bright I cannot see. But we made it home in time cuz the sun’s about to go down. I’ll see you guys in the next one whenever I can take this thing off road and see how fun it is out in the dirt where this thing belongs. Doesn’t really belong on the road, but you can do either or. And I just showed you guys that today. If you guys want to see some more videos of this thing off-road, there’s a bunch of other videos on YouTube that aren’t mine. Go check them out. Support everybody. Like this video, comment, let me know your thoughts. And I’ll see you guys in the next one.
