Big Taxes Coming for Electric Vehicles?
we’ll just charge you a bigger registration fee to offset the gas tax that you’re not paying. Or do you think it’ll decrease the uh value proposition of these vehicles by taxing them more? Electric vehicles are going to be so much cheaper to own and operate in the long run than gasoline cars that they could put a penalty on them and I think people will still eventually switch to them. The gas tax uh worked great for a hundred years because we all purchased gas and the more we drive, the more gas we use and the more tax we pay. But the problem is we’re using less gas now because cars got more efficient. We’re driving hybrids. But the big thing here in California is they’re closing a refinery down there because the private sector looked at it and they said, “Hey, based on our data, Californians are going to continue to buy electric cars and so we’re not going to have justification to operate this refinery anymore.” So it’s actually going away. So you can kind of see where we’re headed. The problem is how do you tie a tax to an electric vehicle people can charge at home? somebody who just put a solar panel up in their backyard and in principle you just put this GPS in people’s car keep track of their mileage and tax them at the end of the year but you know who wants the state putting a GPS in your car to track your mileage they could do odometer but you could say well half the year I was driving out of state so there’s no clean easy solution for at
Electric cars are great. But as more people switch to them, we’ll need to come up with some way to pay for roads (since EVs don’t pay gas taxes). But none of the ideas are great.
