Die E-Bike Challenge beginnt | E-Bikes, Bikepacking-Setup & 370km Streckenplanung | Kalkhoff

You may, you may buy me cream
and a pair of pants with padding. [Music] [Music] Yes, best regards from my mom. Hi darling, I’m already laughing. I’m
sitting in an interview and have the task of sending a voice message or making a call,
and you are the chosen one. I’m supposed to describe the day a little bit, what we did. I’m here right now in Emstek in the Brandworld at Kalkhoff and preparing for the Rider Event. This morning at 10 o’clock was the reception for the riders participating in the event.
We got to know each other, where we come from, what we do. Then there was a brief introduction to the course. The goal was announced and that was also done quite amusingly with A, B, C, and D. We were supposed to guess first, uh which one was basically our goal, and of course, everyone guessed wrong. The highlight was then finding out, okay, what are we doing for this 48-hour challenge and where we’re going? I’m really looking forward to the destination because I haven’t been there yet. That’s quite far, I think. And in that context, we also planned our route. So what’s definitely given to us is the start and finish, and some challenges that we have to complete, like For example, in Bremen, taking a photo with the Bremen Town Musicians, and we are free to plan the route, uh, to organize. The thing is, these challenges have to be completed, and we have to stay within 48 hours. For now, just saying from here. So I’m first setting the start and finish. and then I’ll place the rest in between with waypoints. Do you want to do it that way? On the phone? It’s a bit more practical on the laptop. It looks quite far, and we’ll then divide it into three days. Oh, you can even do it with an e-bike. Of course, we’re doing with e-bikes because we’re also using batteries. We need a ferry selfie with our bikes, but that means the bikes can just stand in front. We’ll get the selfie, we’ll get it here at the Glückstadt Wischhafen. We can do that—oh, we’ll manage that too. Yes. Is that Glückstadt Wischhafen? Yes, on the first day, we’re heading towards Bremen. We have to take the photo there. with the Bremen Town Musicians, and that’s a good 90 km. The next day, we’ll go a bit longer, just under 167 km, which is already quite sporty. Then later, we’ll also go to the next, on the last day, to the ferry terminal where it goes over to Sylt. Well, not the ferry terminal, but the train terminal. No, that’s 90 km, and on Sylt, another 20 km towards the hotel. For me personally, it’s a challenge. I haven’t ridden this much by bike in three days before. I would also use the battery as little as possible. Great, then I’ll take your battery. So you can ride without the battery. We’ll use the assistance, I think. I like challenges and pushing myself a bit. So my, uh, ambition is definitely set on reaching there within 48 hours. Otherwise, we have great equipment and, uh, amazing bikes that we’ll be using for this. Yes. Hi, I’m Rainer from product management at the Kalkhoff brand, and I’m here as the product manager accompanying today on the Academy Tour, and we’re handing over the participants’ bikes for the Academy Tour today. for the ride. For the tour, we’ve selected the Entice 5 and Entice 7 models. They come in our portfolio, the most versatile bikes. We call this the Allroad category. That means, we have trekking bikes with knobby tires. You can go from asphalt to forest paths to dirt roads and basically handle any situation with these bikes. And after that, we were equipped, got to check out the cool bikes, and got the panniers, and were able to attach all the equipment. [Music] [Music] Oh, now it’s starting, it’s already starting. Yes, I was thinking something like a side model or something. In terms of volume, we have different sizes. We have one at a time this one here, these Gravel Packs from Ortlieb. Then we have here, twice, twice these ones. They look very small at first, but we have more here if needed. [Music] You already asked me earlier. Of course, I got a big bag. I have to carry a lot too. Yes, and then we went on an extensive test ride outside on the test track. Before that, of course, we also got a bike fitting to make sure the bike fits. [Music] The bike is extremely sturdy. Uh, I felt very safe, both today and also, when I had tried it before. I had the feeling, okay, I can really ride this anywhere, no matter how far. The problem is the range, 160 km—that’s going to be a challenge. We have a very powerful motor here, which, of course, makes riding nice, but of course also drains the battery, so a powerful motor also consumes energy. The batteries have 800 watt-hours, which is currently the largest available batteries for this series of trekking models. I think that will also be the biggest challenge on the tour—to find smart management for that, for the batteries, because the tours will be taking place well beyond 100 km, and if then riders have luggage, a decent load, a bit of uphill, and a bit of downhill, you’ll probably have to take an extended lunch break, to recharge, because depending on the conditions, around 100 to 120 km are always quite achievable. Beyond that, you really have to manage it, maybe even ride in Eco mode and not just in Turbo mode, or take a charging break. We will try to ride efficiently if necessary, so not constantly on the highest setting, and on the second day, we’ll certainly have to, in between, charge, otherwise my goal at least is to avoid charging. I think the second day will be the critical point of the tour, because that’s almost 170 km, and 170 km with e-bike assistance will probably not be enough. So we’ll have to see, that we recharge somewhere in between, and see how much energy is left, when you say, okay, we still have to ride 20 km without assistance, because maybe for one or another then the battery is empty, and we’ll just have to push through, right? I’m curious to see how it will be with the others, because we don’t know each other yet or don’t know each other well. I’m really excited to show what I can do, what our bikes can do, and to finally reach the sea. I’m really pumped, because I get to meet different people and hear their stories. When we actually arrive on Sylt, the first thing I’ll do, of course, is jump into the water, take a swim, swim, and then enjoy some wellness at the hotel. I wish the participants a lot of fun, especially with the aspect that it’s a bit more flexible. So you get to decide for yourself where to stop, where to go, and which stages to ride. I think it’s great that it’s guided, because then you can look back afterward—I’d really like to be a fly on the wall for that. Look forward to an exciting adventure with us, full of highs and lows. My butt hurts, as well as my legs and inner thighs. I think for everyone watching at the end, it’s going to be a huge amount of fun. Excuse me, just a quick question. Does anyone have my bottle? [Music] To a wonderful 48 hours.
