How Honda and Farmers Advance Carbon Removal for Healthier Air and Soil

My grandfather moved here in 1947. Started
with 211 acres and now we’re a little over 2,000. Brenco Farms has been around for about
40 years. My dad and my uncle started off with about 200 acres and they grew the operation to
about 6,000 acres. Between my great-grandpa, grandpa, and dad, we’ve got a
history in this area and that’s something that I love and definitely
something that I want to continue on. My goal is to make sure the ground is in such
a condition that it’s better than when I found it. I want there to be better soil and
water quality. I want the farm to be in a sustainable financial position. That’s
what drives me. The hope in doing a lot of this is that we will be able to continue
on and improve the soil and it’ll be here for the next several generations. What we
do today is an investment in the future. Biggest thing for me is erosion control.
A benefit of planting the cover crops and reduce tillage is by slowing down the erosion.
That’s soil. It’s not getting washed down into other water systems. It’s slowing down runoff from
chemicals and fertilizers, which is a benefit to everybody in the community. In the beginning was
learning, just experimenting around the edges. We didn’t really know what we were doing. I think
it was those benefits of improved soil quality that made us start with those practices. We
learned a lot and then we went full bore into it. Honda has been working with farmers in Ohio for
decades. We have about 3,000 acres of land where we have local farmers farming that land. It
is part of our DNA here. You can go on any given day to town and see the white suits.
I mean, Honda’s everywhere. So, it’s a good feeling to know that we have a partnership
with the people that are in our community. From our calculations, we believe we can
store about 4 billion metric tons in soil using regenerative practices around
the world. And so we’re thrilled that companies like Honda and farmers like Randy
and Katon have joined us on this journey as we scale and make this a globally viable
decarbonization solution. The reason we are doing what we are doing by planting these
cover crops and regenerative practices is so that there will be a future here. I want to
sit up there on that porch someday and see my grandkids and great grandkids out here working
and having a productive farm to make a success.

Honda is teaming up with farmers across the U.S. to grow a healthier future. Through Carbon by Indigo, Honda is purchasing soil carbon removal credits that remove 1,800 metric tons of CO₂ from the atmosphere.

This investment helps farmers nationwide adopt regenerative practices that improve soil health, conserve water and enhance air quality – including farmers near our operations in Alabama, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina. By supporting farmers, we’re advancing Honda’s goal of decarbonization.

Together we’re restoring local ecosystems and strengthening farmland for generations to come. Learn how Honda is reducing the environmental impact of its products and operations at https://www.honda.com/environment.
