Should You Buy a Kia Sorento Hybrid? Thorough Review By A Mechanic
Hello and welcome to the car can review channel and welcome to the Kia Sarrento Hybrid. And in today’s video, we’re going to do a proper technical review under the hood. Take a look underneath it inside and out. Some things we like, some things we do not like. right after this. Let’s start our technical review under the hood. So, the Sarrento could have three powertrain options. You have the non-hybrid, you have the hybrid, you have the plug-in hybrid. In this video, we’re going to be focusing on the hybrid because that’s the one we tested here. So, let’s start with the engine here. The engine is a four-cylinder 1.6 L turbo direct injected only. Let’s start with the mechanical construction from the top. So, this has a plastic valve cover at the top. Two-piece cylinder head, roller rockers, hydraulic lifters, dual overhead cam. This does have CVVT, which is variable valve timing. CVVD, which is variable valve lift on the intake. Pretty cool. They have both of them in such a small engine. That is just simple design. I I like to say this engine, the variable valve timing part of CVBT is oil controlled. Do they have the two actuators in the front and the bolt of the gear? It has the little plunger in the middle of it that moves. Pretty simple design and I think that is the best design to do for this. This is a timing chain engine. Does have two timing chains. One for the cams to the crank. One of them is for the oil pump which is all the way at the bottom. This does have a aluminum block which has like the main caps are integrated into the upper oil pan. That’s a design we’re seeing a lot with newer cars. This engine is direct injected only. High pressure fuel pump sits on the valve cover. You do have four direct injectors underneath the intake manifold. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have dual system with port. I wish they did. That’s the only thing that is a little bit uh interesting choice there with this engine. This engine’s cooling system is simple and not simple at the same time. So, it does have a mechanical water pump that is belt driven on the outside. It does have a coolant management valve that can send coolant where it needs to go for efficient cooling and kind of faster warm-ups. This is a turbocharged engine, so turbo sits all the way in the back. It’s not a very large turbo cuz it’s not a very large engine to begin with. It is coolant and oil cooled. It does have an airto-air intercooler. Cooler sits all the way in the front, a little bit to the side on the driver’s side. It does have electronic waste gate on this turbo. This engine does have EGR, but here’s the interesting thing. They put the EGR valve in the cooler all the way in the back underneath the turbo. I don’t think that’s a good place for it. Very difficult for service and it’s pretty hot spot and I understand it’s the closest route to the exhaust, but it’s a little bit not accessible for for service. Let’s put it this way. Having said that, this is a hybrid. Let’s dive into the hybrid system. So this is a two motor hybrid system. So you have one motor that sits between the engine and the transmission. That is the main one that kind of drives the car and could be if it’s spun it charges the battery. Then the second motor which is called an HSG hybrid starter generator. That one takes the place of the alternator that can charge the battery but can also start the engine. And the way it starts the engine is, yes, this is another one of those. Uses a drive belt to start the engine, which means the drive belt is a very heavyduty drive belt. It has a huge belt tensioner to keep tension on it because you are spinning the engine through that belt, which is a lot. I kind of cringe every time I see that because that’s a pretty brave design. Let’s put it this way. So, here’s how this works. This car has a six-speed automatic transmission. very basic normal six-speed automatic transmission. Between the engine and the transmission is where that motor sits and the engine has a clutch. So, we can separate the engine from the rest or we can engage it. And here’s how this is going to work. If you’re driving, let’s say, in EV mode, this you can put it in EV mode for a short period of time. The engine will be off, clutch will be disengaged, basically separating the engine from the mix. The motor is directly connected to the transmission. We’re going to supply power to it. That’s going to drive the transmission. So, occasionally you’ll feel this in EV mode shift, which is pretty cool. It’s very smooth. And then when we need the engine to come on, let’s say the battery come low or we’re demanding more power from the car, the HSG motor, which sits where the alternator is, going to start the engine. Once the engine is running, the clutch will engage and now the engine can drive the transmission, but it could also drive the second motor. So if we are using the engine to drive but we want to charge the hybrid battery, we’re going to just drive with the engine. The engine will spin that motor and that’s going to start generating and charge the battery. If we are in regenerative braking, the force of the road will spin the transmission and it’ll spin that motor and the the clutch will be disengaged, enginees off, and then we’re regenerating and charging the battery. This system I I’m just going to say it’s not as efficient as say a hyper parallel system from a Toyota for example with a you know ECVT and whatnot. But I got to say one thing, it still gets similar numbers of gas mileage in a big SUV like this. Pretty impressive. And the best part about the system is it’s smooth. Occasionally you’ll feel the transitions but very rare will you. And when you drive, there’s no drone because this has six-speed automatic transmission. Very cool. This system is so refined. It’s really impressive. I just got to say it. Even the engine doesn’t drone. It’s a very small 1.6 L engine for a big SUV like this. Doesn’t drone. It just feels linear. It feels right. That part they got very good. I really like that part. Now the hypers system here is how should I say things are very big just all over the place a little bit you look here in this area there’s this big contraption here that is the inverter converter assembly so that is going to send power to the motor to energize it send power to the other one to start the engine take power from them to charge the battery this is what controls everything it also has something called a DC toDC converter so this is going to take that high voltage it’s going to step it down to 12 volt to charge the auxiliary battery or the 12volt battery which sits all the way in the back. When we look at the outside, we’ll show you where that is. This inverter does have its own cooling system and that’s a separate cooling system from the engine. So, does have electric water pump does have separate radiator just to cool that. Now, let’s talk about the hybrid battery here because there’s some interesting choices here. So, the hybrid battery is a lithium ion battery. It does not sit inside the car. sits outside the car, but the intake for the cooling system of that battery, because this air cooled, takes air from inside the cabin in the worst spot in the planet underneath a seat where all the family stuff will roll there and block that vent. And then here’s here’s my biggest concern with this. That battery being outside, let’s say you’re driving Arizona, 100°ree weather. Well, the casing of that battery will be super hot and you’re really going to have to work overtime to cool that battery. While hyper models that have it inside the cabin, the cabin is air conditioned. I know the intake is is where it takes the air to cool the battery is air conditioned, but the battery case is going to be very hot. And equally, when things are very cold, it’s the same thing. Batteries outside the car. That’s the only thing that I find a little concerning. And then the location of the vent. I mean, Toyota were the ones that kind of started the whole hybrid thing and they really perfected it. They learned the hard way. You don’t leave a vent in a place where it’s going to get clogged. This is the opposite of that. This is underneath the seat where it’s going to easily get clogged. I don’t think that’s a good a place for it. Just going to say my humble opinion. And then looking under the hood here, let’s talk about things. Quality of things are, how should I say, mid-grade with the exception of the complete afterthought of adding the hybrid system. Let’s talk about that. Let’s examine the the engine area here. Do you see where the air filter is? Every time you see a car with the air filter on the other side, that’s an afterthought or something that has to happen. And that’ll do because the turbo is here and we want that air filter to be in this area except this is where the inverter is. And the inverter is massive. There’s a lot of stuff attached to it. It’s just massive. That’s the problem cuz they could have if this was a little more compact. We can still put the air filter here, but it’s not. What that does is that giant behemoth that goes all the way to the other side, covers your spark plugs, cover your There’s one more thing that has to come out and then all the piping has to go there following it and the wiring. And then the next problem that was kind of the coolant for the engine. Well, this normally doesn’t have a radiator cap. So they had to relocate the bottle elsewhere cuz I mean I have a perfectly open spot here. I don’t know why is it not there. So we ran all the plumbing all the way in the back here next to the brake fluid and that’s that’s the radiator cap. It’s all the way in the back. I don’t know why that is. But then there’s more stuff. So, if you look, if you follow this hose that goes to the Sabana bypass hoses, it is the cheapest, flimsiest plasticky plastic hose. Terrible quality. Then you look right next to it, there’s a proper hose clamp that goes to a metal pipe. And it’s why couldn’t they all be like that? But that’s not where it ends because there is one distinct pipe that I am just amazed by. There’s this one. That’s a very heavyduty pipe. That’s just air. Why can’t we just switch that? Make that plastic. It’s just air. And make the coolant one steel like this one. I I don’t know. I I wish they would see things like that because when this breaks, we have coolant spraying everywhere. That’s just air. There’s no extreme heat or liquid that could leak. It’s just air. That’s these are the things I wish manufacturers would kind of consider when they make the choices. I mean, we put this hose clamp. Can we this one make it hose clamp, too? That’s just my humble two cents, folks. Things underneath here, some of them are really good quality, some of them are mid, some interesting choices, and I feel like they had to shuffle things around for the hybrid system, but they made it work. Because the final result of this is this is a pretty smooth, pretty refined powertrain and it gets good gas mileage. And the best part about it is even with the system kind of being not the best configuration in the planet for efficiency, it does get pretty impressive numbers for gas mileage. So I guess it works though all the complaints and the concerns we have about it kind of becomes irrelevant because it works and I like that. Let’s take a look underneath the Kia Sarrento. Everything’s covered in the front. They do give you an opening for the oil filter and drain plug. That is nice. Let’s look at the front suspension here. So, we got an aluminum knuckle. We got a steel lower control arm with a separate ball joint. Really like that design. We do have a single piston caliper. We have a McFersonson strut design with what appears to be a steel sway bar link, which is nice. Suspension is super simple, just like the aluminum knuckle. I understand they’re all going with that, but at least it’s a bolt-on bearing, a press on. That would be kind of a problem with an aluminum knuckle. Moving away from that to the exhaust. Trying to be nice, but this exhaust really feels generic and not high quality. That’s unfortunately is the case with And then you have this flex pipe at the front. If you come look at it right here, that’s uh Yeah. And then there there’s stuff like this. See this? See that? That is AC drain. I don’t know why they decided to put that little cap. I understand why they they’re trying to avoid insects crawling up and clogging the line, but that’s what’s going to end up clogging the line. That’s just moving away from that. This is a hybrid. Unlike other hybrid models from other manufacturers, this is an all-wheel drive. You do have a drive shaft that goes in the back and a transfer case. If you look around here, you can see it. Transfer case is right there. That’s because this car has an six-speed automatic transmission. So, they can just connect a transfer case and send it. Don’t have to reinvent the wheel. I understand that. But where they did reinvent the wheel is the battery. Battery sits outside. This car is air cooled. That’s not a great idea. I understand it’s fully protected, whatnot, but it’s an air cooled battery. I mean, if it’s super super hot outside, you have the AC full blast inside. This is still outside. It’s going to heat up and then the heated exhaust right next to it and the catalytic converter here glowing towards it. I feel like this should have been inside. This doesn’t take space on the inside, which is nice. Put it outside, but there’s a trade-off to that. I hope that doesn’t become a problem. Moving away from that, fuel tanks right here. It’s an L-shaped fuel tank. So you have the bigger part here and then kind of rolls over the muffler. We look at the back here. This is an all-wheel drive model. So you have differential and this is a coupling that makes all-wheel drive happen and what level. Look at the rear suspension here. You do have an aluminum knuckle. You have a steel multiple steel arms which is nice trailing arm. Couple control arms here. This big one which houses the spring and the shock right next to it. They’re separate. It’s not a strut. Sway bar link also is appears to be steel to me. Single piston caliper in the back with the integrated parking brake on it. This is again familiar design we’re seeing in a lot of cars today. Then a sight to be behold a spare tire. It’s not the best location for it. I understand underneath the car is a little bit more work to get it out with that, but hey, you have a spare tire. Why not? This side is completely covered up. We love this. This is really good. Then they make it up over here with this side completely open. It’s okay. At least one side is covered up. And then we come to the world’s biggest afterthought ever. The trailer hitch. This just watch the level of afterthoughtness. So this is a separate like piece. It’s not part of the body. It goes here. Then it goes all the way behind the muffler. And then on this side kind of goes here. This side is a little bit better, but uh I don’t think they thought this went through. And when you see this, when you look we look at it from outside the car. Uh this is a complete Why does this have to be this big? Can we tuck this maybe here? It’s nice and just just kind of sticks out super low. After this is an afterthought. Let’s take a look at the outside of the Kia Sorrento. And this car is Yeah, it just has a look. You know, you know what? What comes to mind when I look at this? We’re trying too hard at doing two things. We’re trying very hard to make this look like the tailoride, and we’re trying too hard to make this look super cool. It’s a Sarrento, folks. It’s a family SUV. doesn’t have to look super cool. And here’s the problem with cars that are styled like this. And the day they are released, they look great. 5, seven years later, they don’t. They age very quick cuz it’s not a classic design. That’s the problem. I mean, look at this headlight. Goes all the way from here down. You have the lights standing up like that. Then this kind of wraps around and goes here. This all lights up. This is the 10 time running light. It’s just bit much. If this was not here, 100% of Kia Sarrento owners would not mind. Same thing with this one if it was just this. Anyways, Kia logo. Really like it. And uh this hood’s kind of an interesting shape just to make this cutout that is matched here as well. Just a little over the top. Radar sensors all the way down. It’s a lot of manufacturers that put them all the way down. I don’t think that’s a good idea, but they know best they design the car. We wrap around here. We look at the hood. They started on a really good note here. They have this line, but they just they they just couldn’t help it. They had to add this one, which completely just makes the profile a little strange. Come around the side, though. Look at that. It just looks like a normal car. I really, really like the side profile of this car cuz it’s the quintessential SUV look. Nothing over the top. But of course lately Kia has been a little bit on the design side. They could have leave it alone. We had to put this. It’s very important. Don’t exactly know what it does, but if it was not there, again, 100% of Kia Sarrento owners would not mind, but it’s there. Now, this has lock unlock in the front only, not in the back with with like a touch sensor or whatnot. That is expected of this segment. Windows are decent size. Doors are also decent size. This door almost opens in a 90 degree which we really like that. That gives you very easy entrance in the back and that is good. See this is what I talk about with design. This glass is actually a really good size except we had to put this and cut cut from that glass. Cut that perfect blind spot where you would need it. That’s okay. Coming in the back here. I I just I think the back is well done with a few things that are just beyond me. Let’s look at the looks first. What do these taillights remind me of, Jose? What What do they remind you of? Yeah, that car. Nice looking taillights. I just don’t understand why we have this part. This was just a big block. It would be nicer. That’s okay. Love the badging though. Really like their logo. the logo, super cool. Sorrento in a specific font, which is nice. And then hybrid electric vehicle. So, you do need to know if there’s a hybrid or not or a plug-in. But here’s where things start to go south a little bit. First door handle here, right? You have all this space. I mean, this is a big space right here. Where is the button to open the door? It’s all the way here. Don’t know why that is. I mean, this is this just doesn’t make sense to me. Why do we hide the Anyways, second complete absolute afterthought. Let’s close this door so we can see it more clearly. The trailer hitch. Got to talk about that. So, you’re close to the car. You’re going to just hit it and hit it. That’s the first problem. Second problem just just looks like something is just sticking out completely from the car. It looks horrendous. Like the trailer hitch itself. Okay, we can live with that. But why does the wire has to be sticking out so much? It just looks complete afterthought. Looks like an aftermarket accessory. It’s not. But they did put the cover with Kia written on it with the same cool font as the logo. So that is nice. Let’s look at the back here. The strange button. Actually, it took me a minute when we first got this car. I was like, where is the button? This is a three row SUV, which is you don’t expect it cuz it’s not that big, but it’s not the biggest third row. Look at that when we look at that. But here’s the thing with cars. Three row SUVs usually do not have a cover for the back area because the three row and third row seat and the row. This one they decided to come up with a kind of a better plan although it’s yeah it’s fighting this. So you have this which you pull up and that’s your cover for your valuables in the back. You have an area right here if we show them Jose right there and then right here where you can install this and then you can cover everything up. But not only that, they give you two spots for good measure. And then when you’re not using it, you have a spot here once you’re Do you see how this is the problem with this? It’s never well engineer for any car. This the the afterthought of afterthoughts. They put a spot right here where the thing fits. Great. Now it doesn’t have to be in the way when we put the third row seat up. Except now you can’t open the storage. See how you have to pick between what you want. And then uh third row is simple to put up. I really like this. Doesn’t need to be more complicated. But they didn’t leave it there. Let’s put this down because if you’re carrying something big and you want to lower the front two, you don’t actually have to go there. They gave you a button right here. Right here on the side that puts them down. That’s actually doesn’t put them up, of course. It’s just a release, but that works. Now, let’s remove this complete afterthought, which is just I wish cars wouldn’t have this so they could think of something better than having this thing. Let’s look here. You don’t have a lot of storage here. This is where a 12vt battery actually is. This is a really nice spot. Simple to have some some of your jack and whatnot, but little bit of storage here, a little bit on the side, but not a lot under here. Not because the batter is here. Remember, batter is under the car. We looked at it earlier. And lastly, on the exterior, single shock for single motor for this door. So, you have the wire going through the headliner. Don’t know why the manufacturers love to do that, but this one is actually just a shock. Doesn’t have a wire. It’s not a motor. So, it’s a single motor door. And let’s finalize the exterior is one thing. I feel like there is a miscommunication between the design team of this car because I really dislike the location in this button. I mean, it just makes absolutely no sense. It only makes one thing make sense. If this was the opening button and the closing button in one button, saves them a lot of money in production and whatnot. Except if we uh look a little bit here. Oh, here we go. Here’s another button. So you get to select. If you’re very very tall, you cannot push this one. You can actually push this one. It’ll also close the door. That’s the best part. And you could press this one, which does the exact same thing. So I I I don’t understand this. I mean, if this was not here, just this. Oh, it makes sense. You know, one button for both open and close, but that’s not the case. So don’t understand why that button is there. Let’s take a look at the interior of the Kia STO because I I just have to say one thing before we start. I really like this interior. There’s some things interesting, but mostly I love it because when you look at it, it doesn’t look overthe-top. It just looks simple, but it looks nice at the same time. I just there’s no other way to describe it, but it goes so much beyond that. Super comfortable seats, super nice visibility, and you’re you’re the position of the driver isn’t really a good one where it feels very comfortable and natural. And then the screens usually I don’t like gauges that are screens, and this one does a few things, but but I like how they’re connected. They just aesthetically it looks very nice. They are two separate screens. There’s a black line between them, but it just looks right. Let’s put it this way. And then we look at the center stack here. the HVAC controls, which are not just HVAC controls because they do this deal. Isn’t that the coolest thing? This is easily one of the most innovative interior solutions for not having 7 million buttons, but having everything separate from the screen. This is hands down, this is a great idea. So, you have all your HVAC controls visible and all your radio controls at the same time without having you just have a button that switches between them. That’s pretty smart because you don’t need your HVSAC controls all the time and you don’t need your radio controls there all the time. But you now you have both. With a flip of a button, you have both. That’s pretty cool. The shifter is one of those rotary dials. The only thing is feels really nice and it has the park button in the middle. I like that. So you flip it one way, it’s reverse. Flip it one way, drive. So I can I guess live with that. And even with this innovative screen here that gives you a lot, you still have physical buttons for important things. heating and cold seats, drive mode, your parking brake, your auto hold. There is some physical buttons in this car for the important things because I don’t want to go through this or the the screen to turn on my heated seats. No, it’s just a little toggle here. Cannot be simpler than that. Folks, this interior just feels great from a kind of a where everything is put, the space, the usability, everything is great. However, there is one small concern. This is a prestige trim which has this nice leather and the suede headliner all that. It just doesn’t feel as nice of materials. You go something like the ter tellide, it feels a lot nicer. This just doesn’t. So, what I’m trying to tell you is if you’re going for a prestige trim because of this, maybe reconsider because everything else that you’re going to get in the lower trim will still be here minus these two and I think 360 camera that you can’t buy get as an option, which is honestly it’s fine. That’s all I’m going to tell you. Let’s take a look at the second row seat of the Kia STO. I’m 5’7. This is my driving position. I have decent knee room, decent headroom, even though this has the panoramic sunroof. So, this particular one has the captain chair configuration, which I like. I like that they also have the option of the bench seat, which is nice. Something about this, the usability is great. The materials, as we talked about in the front, I mean, it’s a very cheap old plastic. That’s fine. But they make it up by putting a USBC here and on the other seat. It’s actually a pretty nice place. You still have a regular like a household outlet and you have a 12vt volt socket in the bottom. You do have heated seats in the back here. You do have a shade to protect the eyes of the kiddos which this particular shade does not want to clip in the back. Yeah, there comfortable seats. Very comfortable back space. I really like this. You have two vents here. No vents on the roof. Let’s take a look at the third row seat here. In all fairness, I did have to move the seat a little bit to fit. This is obviously not a very big third row seat. You only have seating for two. And look at this giant thigh angle here. They’re not comfortable for adults, but they’re actually not that bad for an SUV of this size, which I really like that you do have a USBC here. There is absolutely nothing else here. There’s no shade or anything, which is totally fine because honestly, in a SUV like this, you don’t expect it to have a third row. and have a third row that you can actually use at least for kids or short trips with adults or whatnot. It is actually a usable third row, which is pretty impressive cuz this is not a very big SUV. So, the Kia Sarrento Hybrid, folks, the truth have to be said. This is a pretty solid hybrid SUV. First, let’s talk about the powertrain. I like how smooth it is. I like that you don’t have a typical drone of an ECVT or something like that. It has a six-speed automatic. It’s a very smooth one, too. It just you drive it, it doesn’t feel like a hybrid. Feels like a normal car and a very smooth, refined powertrain. I really like that part. Doesn’t disappoint in gas mileage. Actually gets about average for this segment of this size of SUV hybrid with some interesting choices for that powertrain. Nothing is perfect in life, like the location of the battery outside the car, the vent under the seat. That’s kind of interesting. And the biggest one to me is the belt starter, if you would. That uh hybrid starter generator deal with the belt. And so the belt becomes kind of a viral thing to the car that you must check and this big behemoth tensioner. Don’t know about that part. But here’s the best part about this car. Looks on the outside, the front’s a bit too much, but it’s not over the top. The inside, the best part about this inside is it’s a it’s kind of a it just feels right. There’s no other way to describe it. You get in it. This is not an exciting exhilarating interior and drive and whatnot, but it’s one of those cars where you get in, you’re busy with your life. This car does not distract you. It’s just you keep your focus on things that are more important than the car. That’s that’s what you feel inside here. And it doesn’t disappoint because it is still pretty technologically advanced. I have every feature you expect from a car in this year that we are in. But it doesn’t intrude. Certain things are simple. For example, HVAC control. I really like that panel that switches. Brilliant idea. Now you have a lot of control without cluttering the whole interior with buttons, but there’s enough buttons for things that need to remain simple. There’s enough technology and and kind of looks modern when you need it. The only thing I have about this particular trim, the Prestige, it’s very nice. Nice leather. the headliner material, whatnot, but the materials don’t feel as high-end as say a Telleluride thing is a little expensive here. And and that’s the next part. Expensive. You’re pretty close to the Telluride neighborhood with this car fully loaded, decked out in a hybrid model. That’s the problem. The second thing is if you go and option like the there’s only two trims in the hybrid, the lower trim of the hybrid, you go option out decked out of every single option, you save a lot of money. and what you’re missing out is not really a big thing. That’s I was heads up on that and I like that they did that. They gave you most of the options for the prestigious trim in the other one as an option package. That’s pretty cool, folks. Let’s put it this way. This is truly an impressive SUV. If reliability holds and that location of the battery and the vent doesn’t intrude, this is a solid hybrid option because the interior just feels great. comfortable, not over the top, refined. The powertrain is very refined. It’s not quiet, but again, in this segment, that’s what you expect. But it just feels right. It feels comfortable. It drives well. That’s the main thing in a car like this to me, not the gizmos and the looks and whatnot. And it doesn’t disappoint in that department either, but that’s not the main thing. I like that.
