UK EV Drivers Will Pay PER MILE! The Death of The Electric Car “Free Ride”
[Music] If you live in the UK, you’re soon going to pay an EV tax just like unfortunately Australians are as well. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m okay with people paying a road user charge. Well, I’m okay with it. Once EVs take more than 50% market share, but until that point in time, I think this is massively premature. YouTube’s new algorithm means that you’re often not getting all of our videos in your feed. Pretty sure you’re probably not seeing a lot of them. In the description, there is a link to our newsletter. Click on that and you can get an update every day of all the latest news in the electric car industry. Hello, my friends. Welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans and you’re watching the Electric Viking. There’s often like these EV organizations who represent countries and stuff and they come out and say, “Oh, we’re okay with this EV taxes.” And I think, “What? You might be, I sure as hell aren’t. Why am I not?” Well, because guess what? Uh, the emissions from internal combustion cars cause billions of dollars of damage to human health. That’s in just one country. Worldwide, the number is in the hundreds of billions. I mean really basically you’re sanctioning cancer if you think we should be taxing EVs at this point in time. You are. I know that sounds crazy but it’s true. It doesn’t make sense, right? Put it this way. If all cars on the roads today were electric, we would reduce our health care bills in Australia by billions and billions of dollars. Way more than what it costs to repair every the roads every year. So it doesn’t make any sense. But this is not about it’s not about sense. It’s about politics. Britain is going to announce new EV mileage fees in this month’s budget. EV drivers annual cost could rise by about 240 pounds or nearly $500 Australian dollars. Anyway, um electric car owners in the UK may soon find or will soon find their zero emissions glow dimmed slightly by the Labor government. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is preparing a payper mile tax for EVs to help plug the hole left by declining fuel duty receipts. With more drivers ditching petrol pumps for charging cables and in the UK EV sales have hit around 25%, so one in four, the Treasury suddenly finds itself missing billions in the please drive somewhere so we can tax you for it department says car scoops. The reported figure being floated around 3 p or 4 cents per mile, which at 8,000 mi or 13,000 km per year would be about $240. That’s $315 per year. The government is expected to argue that while UK EB drivers might be disappointed by the new charge, they’ll still get a better deal than drivers of petrol and diesel engine vehicles who pay around £600 or £784 per year in fuel duty. Now, I don’t agree with this at all, but one of the reasons why is because basically if you’ve got an EV, you’ll have to fill out a log book to tell the government how many kilometers you drive every year. So, they’re adding that kind of um level of complexity to your ownership. Anyway, the Daily Telegraph says that um this will be another blow to EV drivers who from this year have been forced to pay the annual vehicle excise duty previously only payable by petrol and diesel drivers. Factor in that $200 cost. That’s $255 US in an annual VED bill. And an EV owner covering 8,000 miles a year could be asked to pay around £440 more to drive their car in 2028 when the scheme is going live than they did in 2024. However, the Labor government did introduce grants of up to £3,750 for buyers of new EVs um 3 years after the previous government got rid of the scheme. But those new EVs can’t be Chinese cars. um they don’t get the subsidies. So, this is kind of to protect uh the European automotive industry to some degree. Guys, I use Powers Shop, my electricity, to charge my EV for free between 12 and 2:00 during the day. I’ll put a link in the description. If you sign up with them, you get $170 discount to sign up. Also, my solar and batteries. I’ve got a 50 kWh battery here, and I’ve got a big solar array. So, I pay $0 for electricity. That’s including charging my electric car. Reync Solar is the company that I used. I’ll put a link to them in the description below. How the scheme will be monitored though? Well, EV drivers will have to draw up their own mileage estimate figures for the coming year, and they’ll have to tell the government what they did or what they’re going to do. If they’re found to drive more miles than estimated, they could get a rebate or a bill, but they have to fill out paperwork to make all this happen. So, it’s another thing you got to think about, right? Personally, I find having to pay bills. I’ve got a water bill here on the ground that I just paid for. Um, all these different bills, all these insuranceances and all this stuff, it’s quite ownorous to do this if you’re a homeowner. And there’s so many things to remember. It’s easy to forget stuff. So, adding more complexity to car ownership, in my opinion, kind of sucks. I don’t like this stuff. Anyway, EV drivers aren’t the only ones that um are just going to be disappointed by this news. The UK Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said it recognized the need for a rethink over vehicle taxation. However, it described pay per mile as entirely the wrong measure at the wrong time. one that would end up deterring consumers and further undermining industry’s ability to meet its EV mandate targets targets with significant ramifications for perceptions of the UK as a place to invest. So even the UK automotive industry appears to disagree with doing it this way, pay per mile. Here’s the thing as well. Like I’ve said before, if you did it on pay per mile, if it was about what the damage you do to the roads, your use on the roads, you pay per mile because you’re you’re basically creating enough this a certain amount of wear and tear. Well, then the thing is the data in the UK and Australia and America says that 90% of the damage to roads is caused by large trucks. That would mean trucks would be footing the majority of the bill and the cost for EV drivers and normal car drivers would be minuscule. It’d be like £10 a year. It’d be tiny. But it’s not about that really. It’s just about another government tax ultimately. Guys, let me know what you think in the comments. Thanks for watching. Bye-bye. [Music]
