China’s electric bikes are getting better and better | Engwe Engine Pro 3.0 Boost review

Hello electro heads. Welcome to China. It’s the first time I’ve ever been to China and it’s the first time I’m ever riding this bike. I’m going to put it through its paces in Shenzen, which I’m super super excited about. I know that these fat tire bikes are very popular with the electro heads audience. And the newest fat tire offering from Enu might just be a contender for the best value fat tire bike on the market right now. Is it going to be? We’ll find out today in Shenzen. But before we do, let’s take a quick look at the spec. The Enu Engine Pro 3 Boost is on paper the most impressive ebike Enuway have made so far. It boasts front and rear suspension with 50 mil of travel on the front and 62 mil on the back, as well as coils underneath the seat for added comfort. Its 250 W motor can output 90 new meters of torque, much more than you’d usually expect from a 250 W motor. The battery has also had a big upgrade. Enui have switched to Samsung cells and are achieving a range of up to 130 kilometers in the lowest speed mode. They’ve also introduced a new battery management system to increase longevity and ensure the battery can be charged safely always. All electronic components are rated at at least IPX5 water resistance with some being rated at IPX7, meaning this is an all-weather ebike. The hydraulic dual piston brakes are an upgrade from the mechanical brakes found on some cheaper Enway models. And Enway have opted for a torque sensor on this model, which I can already tell you ensures very smooth and intuitive acceleration. Front and rear lights come fitted as standard with the rear light activating under braking. The Shimano Tory gear set does an okay job and does seem to shift without any misfires or inaccuracy. Enu designed this frame from scratch and have stress tested it diligently in their lab, which we were lucky enough to get access to. Thankfully, we managed not to break any of the machine. You can pair this bike to the Endway app to activate the anti- theft system and to receive over-the-air updates to the bike’s firmware. The display on the Enway Engine Pro 3 is an absolute banger. It’s so easy to use, even under intense sunlight and glare. And next to it, you have controls for shifting power modes, using the horn or lights, and activating boost mode. In boost mode, acceleration increases up to 15% and torque increases up to 30%. And it will last for 60 seconds as long as you pedal at at least 5 RPM, which is barely pedaling at all. The bike weighs 35 kilos and can take riders of up to 150 kg or 330 lb and riders up to 6’2 in height. And the rear pan can take up to 25 kilos in weight. This all comes in at a price of £1,699 euros or dollars depending on where you are. So, some impressive spec there. What I want to do now is just take it for a quick ride and give you some first riding impressions. Before I do, let me set the scene. This is our last day in China. We’ve been here for 7 days. And in about 2 hours, we are going to go to the airport to go home. So, I want to do as thorough a review as I can during this time, but there might be some things that I don’t cover. So, ask a question in the comments if you have any specific questions and I will get back to you. Uh, but we’ve been given a full presentation on this bike. We’ve been taken to the lab where it was tested and developed and I do think this could be a really, really impressive fat tire electric bike. I really hope it is. So, let’s jump on it and find out. So, the first thing that’s instantly notable with this new Angry Engine Pro is the increase in torque. We’re on a bit of a hill here. We’re going down. Hello, Niha. Um, so I’m just going past the school and uh obviously a white man with a big red beard testing an ebike is quite unusual here. So yeah, the increase in torque is very very noticeable. It just pulls away so easily and because of the torque sensor, it feathers in really nicely as well. I do think some of the previous fat tire bikes from Enuway have been a bit jerky, let’s say, when it comes to the sensor. uh you either get this flood of power coming in all at once or it kicks in with a bit of a delay. But this is almost instantaneous and it feathers in nicely as well, which I just think means when you’re doing things like cornering, the bike’s going to handle a lot better and it’s going to be a lot more intuitive. And then I’m just going to turn around and try going up this gradient. I’m in speed mode five. I might just take it down a little bit so that I can give it a proper test. Okay, let’s do speed mode two. And I’m in sixth gear as well. So, I’m not making things too easy for myself here. And this is going up the hill without really very much effort at all at 12.5 km an hour. If I start to put some effort in, it’s a lot harder for me. Um, and I only get up to 14 miles an hour. So, I think I’ll just stay a bit slower and take it easy because, uh, it is about 32° here right now and it’s incredibly humid. And as a big hairy ginger man, I’m not really built for heat, sun, and humidity. So, I might be a sweaty mess by the end of this review. I have to say, first impressions so far of riding this bike. Really good. Very, very impressed by it. It’s very smooth. An incredibly smooth ride. And I have to say sometimes I find fat tire bikes a little harder to handle and balance on uh than a thinner tire bike, which I know might be a bit kind of counterintuitive, but I’m just not used to fat tire bikes so much. I’m used to riding thinner tire bikes, and this is just so well balanced. The frame and all the components, they’ve done a really good job here of just balancing out this bike. One thing that’s really interesting about China is no one really rides ebikes here, especially fat tire ebikes. Everyone rides electric mopeds and it seems that they’re just perfectly legal for anyone to ride. I’m not sure you even need a license for them. And apparently that’s because Chinese people prefer not to pedal. And you know what? I absolutely back that. And this is available with a throttle in countries that uh aren’t in the EU or the UK. And I could see this being a really fun throttle fat tire bike actually. Okay, I’m just going to do a quick folding test. I always like doing this. I haven’t folded this bike yet. And I just want to see how easy or difficult it is without ever having folded it before. So, let’s go. All of these things are guesses, but I guess you unlatch it there. And then, I mean, with a bike that weighs 35 kilos, it’s never going to be too easy. It’s pretty stiff. Oh, there we go. Oh, that’s folded. and then fold that down there. All in all, not too difficult. You’re only ever going to fold it like this, I think, uh to put it in the back of a car or maybe store it somewhere at home. You’re never going to wheel it around like this. Uh it’s just too heavy. And I do find that when ebikes first arrive, um these fat tire bikes always tend to be quite stiff when you’re trying to unfold them. So, unfold and fold them a few times just to loosen all of that stuff up. But all in all, that was pretty easy and took about 5 seconds. [Music] Depending on which generation of Enway bikes you’ve ridden, they can have a bit of a reputation for not being the best quality ebikes out there. They may be seen as being uh cheap and cheerful, but Enway have really pulled no punches this time in developing a bike that has quality at the core and still has competitive pricing. So, they’re moving up in terms of their quality and they’re trying to keep their uh pricing as competitive as possible. So on this model for example, we have a Samsung battery complete with a very very good battery management system. We have full IPX7 waterproofing on many of the components. Um and nothing that’s less than IPX5. We have uh punch resistant fat tires uh which is pretty common and standard on fat tire electric bikes, but always nice to see. Of course, we’ve got a frame that has been developed inhouse, so they’re not just getting parts off the shelf and chucking them together. Uh, we have 90 new m of torque in this model, so it’s torquier than the previous generation. And we have a really, really comfortable saddle. I will say it’s really nice. It’s like getting a massage on your butt, which is maybe not something I should admit on camera. I’ve never had a butt massage, so I don’t actually know what that feels like. Don’t know why I said it. And even though there are fewer cells in this battery than on the previous one, it’s a better battery. It’s more efficient. So, even on the higher speed mode, you can get 85 km of range on this bike. Sadly, I can’t test that today because if I cycled for 85 km, I would miss my flight home. But I have actually seen the lab where they test that and I now actually trust their testing conditions. I have to say I’m really really impressed by how Enway are developing their tech inhouse, how they’re developing their lab, how they’re developing all their new products. My assumption before coming here to China was that Enway were a team of maybe about 50 people. But they have about 350 employees, a huge, huge office full of people. They’ve got a huge product team that are developing new products all the time. loads of people that work in marketing, loads of people that work in compliance, loads of people that just focus on the safety of these bikes. They’ve got a team of I think about 10 people that work in the lab. Uh they will do things like stress test all of the components of the bike under extreme heat and extreme cold. They will nihow they will have a rolling road where they will stress the bike on the rolling road to see if the frame is going to crack or to see if there are any weaknesses on the bike. Uh, and then they have a different setting where they can test it on uh, what is in theory more of a kind of bumpy gravel track. And then they have a team of five people whose job it is just to take these bikes out and ride them, which sounds like a really fun job. And if this channel ever goes south, is one that I would gladly apply for. Okay, I’ve just pulled over for a second cuz I want to tell you some things I really like about this bike. Um, also just to have a chat with my mate here and just to have a bit of a break cuz it’s so so warm. Apologies, by the way, for the clattering noise that’s going on in the background. If you can hear that, it’s quite loud and chaotic in China at the best of times. And there’s some madness going on over there. But don’t worry about that. Focus on this. What do I love about this bike? If you’re a big guy like me, I think fat tire bikes are a great option. But not every fat tire bike is actually that comfortable to ride. I think they’ve actually really focused on that issue uh with this bike. So, you got the dual suspension on the back. You’ve got all of this which is doing work just to make it a more comfortable ride for you. The seat is so cushioned. It’s really, really comfortable and it almost feels like a suspension in itself. And then you’ve got the front suspension as well. So, it’s not a load of travel in these forks. And they are set up to be quite sporty at the moment. Um, but again, just softening the ride for you. And I think that makes this a good bike for heavier riders, big lads like myself. But also, I think it makes it a really good bike. If you’re an older rider, and I know that fat tire bikes are really popular with older people, people with mobility issues. If you are one of those people and you’ve never picked up a 35 kg fat tire bike before, just make sure that you’re comfortable lifting something this weight into the back of a car uh before you actually go ahead and purchase it. If that’s not a consideration for you, if you just want to put it in your garage, take it out when you want to ride it, these things are great cuz they’re so comfortable and so so easy to ride. They take a little bit of getting used to if you’ve never ridden one before. Kind of somewhere in between like a motorbike or a moped and a bicycle, but Enuway have done a really good job of making this one quite agile and uh easy to handle. It’s got really good turning circle and they also have made it very comfortable. So, it’s like a good handling SUV. I really, really like it. I think it looks great as well to be honest. I’m not always a fan of the fat tire look, but I love the paint job on this. It’s kind of like a there’s some speckles. There’s some there’s something metallic going on in in the paintwork. Um it looks absolutely lovely. And the frame that they’ve designed, I think, just looks really cool. It will be copied by loads of other brands, I think, in due course. So, look, there’s a lot to like here, isn’t there? What do you think? While I’m doing this, can I just say thank you to everyone that supported Electraheads over the past 5 years that we’ve been doing this? Because without you, I don’t think I would be riding a bike around China right now. and seeing this beautiful country. It’s been such an eye openener for me. Like obviously we all have certain preconceptions about China in the west and I didn’t know whether I was going to have a good time. I’ve had a amazing time. I’ve loved every single second of it. Um so thank you if you’ve supported the channel, subscribed and you’ve been watching especially you’ve been watching since uh near the beginning. You are one of my favorite people. Thank you. had such a great time today riding this around Shenzen and I’ve had a great time on this trip in general. If you want to see the whole trip, myself and my friend Alish have done a vlog of all of the seven days, which does include a typhoon, the biggest typhoon since, I think, 2010 that hit China while we were here. The link for that video will be in the description of this video. So, this bike, I think it’s a really compelling package for €1,699, but as you know, it’s angry. The price is never going to be the full price. There’s always going to be some kind of deal or discount going on because that’s what they do. And you can get a discount with the code that’s in the description of this video. It’s a really compelling package for the price generally. And there’s loads of little add-ons that you don’t necessarily get on other bikes in the same bracket. So, one of those is the anti- theft system. Um, just set that up on the app and if anyone tries to tamper with the bike, the alarm will go off. You can geoence it so it can’t be taken out of a certain area as well. That’s really useful. You can see more about that feature on Alish’s review of the Angu Map 4. Uh she did an in-depth review of that new feature of theirs. Um the boost button, which actually I’ve barely had to use today, but it’s kind of like a throttle. It’s their way of getting around the throttle thing in the UK. U but you get a boost for a certain amount of time that just means you don’t need to pedal and it goes full power. It’s also great for getting up hills. There’s just a lot to love about it. super comfortable, super agile, really really intuitive to ride. Uh the only downside I can really really think of is the fact that it weighs 5 kilos more than its predecessor. But if you’re buying a fat tire bike, you know, it’s going to be heavy anyway. So I think Enory have done a great job here and I think this is going to be a really really popular ebike in America, Europe, and the UK. So look, thanks for watching this. Um as I said earlier, thanks for supporting the channel because it means we get to do awesome things like this. Most importantly, just have a great day and thanks for watching this video. Take care. The attention to detail on the Engwe Engine Pro 3.0 Boost marks an impressive step-up in quality from Engwe.

China dominates the global landscape when it comes to ebike production, and this is especially true of fat tyre electric bikes – and Engwe are one of the largest players.

And with the 3rd iteration of their Engine Pro series, I think they’ve achieved something really special – though it does come with a higher price tag than many of their lower end models.

Will it prove to be a hit? That remains to be seen, but this is certainly one of the best value for money fat tyre bikes on the market right now.
