2025 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid Review
Next to me is Canada’s bestselling plug-in hybrid and it’s seriously impressive. Tom here with Go Auto and we’re here at Mitsubishi’s number one PHEV dealer here in Canada. Go Langley Mitsubishi. And of course next to me we got the Outlander PHEV. A vehicle that combines safety, technology, versatility, and of course electricity. And that all starts under this hood because this vehicle has a 2.4 L 4 cylinder engine. It’s pretty small for a vehicle this size. It’s only making 131 horsepower. But Mitsubishi put the focus on the EV side compared to the gasoline like other hybrids. This vehicle has a high voltage battery of 20 kwatt hours. That’s making over 248 horsepower. When you combine that with the gasoline engine, you’re making almost 400 horsepower. That’s sports car territory in a three row SUV. But let’s switch things up and talk about the design of this vehicle because it’s got a lot going for it. Up front here, you got separate LED headlights with your main components down below and the nice daytime running light accent here at the top. It’s got this nice silver trim connecting it down to the LED fog lights. The whole assembly is LED, making it a perfect vehicle for nighttime driving to get the best visibility possible. And that’s also adding to something because Mitsubishi is focused on safety. And the Outlander PHEV comes with everything Mitsubishi offers. Lane keep assist, forward collision, pedestrian detection, and so much more. The list goes on. Like up front here, you have your adaptive cruise control sensor that actually perfectly blends into the grill down below. And a surround view camera tucked away right there as well. Really distinctively on display while still being hidden within the grill design. I love that. Now, the side proportions of this vehicle are really nice. It’s got this nice boxy yet curved frame to it. You got this nice two-tone black on beautiful red exterior and the silver trims up front carry back here with the rails and window trim. The rims are 20 in and have a nice gloss black on silver. A real premium look for a vehicle like this. And behind that is an intelligent all-wheel drive system, making it an excellent choice for Canada’s winter driving. And to top it all off, right here is your gas cap, but on the other side is where you have your EV charging ports, too. In fact, this is great for level one, two, and three charging. So whether you’re at home and you unplug your phone to plug in your car, or you’re in a rush and need to charge fast, you can do all of that with this vehicle. Now, the vehicle has a really tame design here in the rear. I like these very thin LED tail lights that go in pretty far without actually becoming a full light bar. It’s a nice way to have your own design language in something that’s kind of going on a trending path. And down below, I also really appreciate the painted bumper down here with the nice silver accents because a lot of manufacturers are going for more of that plastic bumper. And I like how Mitsubishi didn’t follow that path. One thing to note, the exhaust is actually hidden underneath the vehicle and you kind of have this dual fake exhaust tip look design back here. Let me know in the comments what your thoughts are on that. But one thing I know that you’re going to love is the trunk space in this vehicle because it’s actually a third row vehicle and you get a lot of space back here because the floor is actually lower. You have your sealant and air compressor down there as well as some tools. On the side, you got a 1500 W wall outlet plugin, perfect for charging a computer on the go, or if you plan on camping with this vehicle, can easily do a plug-in stove, barbecue, even a blender without any issues because it will use the hybrid battery. Genius. On the sides here, you also got little accent lights and grocery hooks. But this seat right here, the third row, I love how they have this system for folding up and down. Grab this, let it drop, hit number three, grab number four, and it folds down to give you a nice flat floor load space. This gives you ample more room to store things for longer road trips if you’re not needing that third row. And if you need even more space, you can maximize it with the levers right here. Give it a pull and the seats fold all the way down almost completely flat for ample storage. But if you need to bring the third row back up, it’s just as easy. Grab number one, pull it up and over and grab number two. And I like how it’s velcro so that way it’s not going to be flapping around. It always stays in place. So that way it’s not going to get in the way of your luggage. Now the third row in this vehicle is definitely more of a kids area. It’s it’s pretty tight back here. This seat’s actually all the way forward. So, the person in the second row would have to sit cross-legged, and I still have my knees pretty heavy against this second row. But back here, the kids have a nice bolstered seat to kind of hug them in nicely. And the back rest is pretty small to increase visibility for the driver, which is really nice. But if someone does end up sitting back here, you can fold this part up, which is basically a large headrest to help give them that better support because you can see I don’t have it. For amenities back here though, you do get squared cup holders, which is perfect for either a phone or a cup. And up top here, there’s a little slot which is perfect for in a little iPad mini or a phone of some sort. And the next thing to talk about too is actually getting in and out because vehicles in this size segment tend to be a little awkward with it. And Mitsubishi did a really good job. You got a latch right here. Flip it up and push the seat forward and it folds forward and also slides. You can also have it down so the seats fold flat so making it really easy getting in and out of this third row. Now the second row in this vehicle is definitely suited towards adults and older kids. Proof of that, the seats are now diamond stitched with the contrast stitching accent, which is really nice. And these seats also have some movability. You can slide them all the way forward or all the way back if there’s no one in the third row. And they even recline, which is perfect if you want to take a nap because you also get a little sun shade here to block out the sun on those hot summer days. The middle also folds down to reveal your cup holders and a nice caffin chair seating position. And in terms of amenities, you got heated seats and also climate controls back here, which is really nice because if the parents wanted at 22 and you’re sweating like I am back here, you can bring it all the way down and make it nice and cold back here, which is really nice. You got USBC ports down at the bottom. And a good amount of storage, too. Not only in the door panel, you got a big cubby right here. This one’s perfect for an iPad. And you can easily place a wallet or a phone right there. So on long road trips, you don’t need to hold your phone and look down. You can have it right there, watch a movie on the go. Now, the front interior cabin in this vehicle is really nice. You get the same diamond stitch and contrast pattern here in the front seats as you did in the back. Except these ones, I have to say, are really comfortable. They’re almost like a lazy boy in my opinion. Really nice. Right down here is your gear selector, and it goes forward for reverse and down for drive. P for park’s just a button. And down below, I really like this feature. This is your drive mode selector, and it’s finished in this nice aluminum like casing around it. And you can spin it to whatever drive mode you want, putting it back into normal. And the button inside activates your terrain mode, which we’ll keep off for now at a standstill. But as you change it, it actually changes your digital drivers display with a cool little image of the vehicle, which is really nice to see. This is the same material as well that you’ll see on the climate control dials. Changing the fan speed up and down and your direction of air flow can be here as well as your fan speed here in the middle. It’s also a nice thing to say that you can also adjust the rear temperature from up here as well. So, if the kids start messing around with it, you can shut it off on them, which is really nice. On the right side of it here, you have your auto hold feature and your parking brake with the cup holders right down here and a center console that’s a little bit on the smaller side, but honestly, you can still load up a lot of stuff there. You got a USBC and USBA port right there, including a 12volt socket, but let’s be honest here. You’re probably just going to use that wireless charger because that’s super easy to use. This steering wheel is really nice with fully wrapped leather that’s also heated, but the 9 and three position has this nice golf ball dimpled texture to it that’s really nice to hold on to and gives you a better grip on the road. On the left side is all your media controls and digital driver display, which I’ll get to in a moment. And on the right side is where you have your adaptive cruise control and a button that brings up all your safety features in the vehicle through the digital cockpit as well as the headsup display which is a really nice touch. And this digital driver’s display is fantastic. It’s so easy to use because you just use a click of a button on the right to go through all the menus from settings, media, navigation. You can change all your safety features to on and off. And you also get to see your energy flow from gasoline to battery to the wheels. What power is going where, which is a really cool thing to see when you basically have two different power outputs in one vehicle. But to go beyond that, too, you also get all your safety features on display here. And the EV settings in this vehicle are going to be all on the infotainment system. Now, it’s a little bit smaller than I’d like to see in a vehicle, but honestly, it does everything you want it to, which is a fantastic thing. Click on info. Click on EV. And here you can see energy usage, charging stations, even the timers for charging or climate control. And the climate control timer is actually a really cool feature. Think of it like command start, but for electric vehicles. Rather than using the gasoline engine to warm up the cabin in the vehicle and gassing out your garage, the vehicle will use the battery to warm up the cabin for you. So even our coldest temperatures, the vehicle is still going to be nice and warm for you. To go beyond that with this infotainment system, you have a nice home screen that’s kind of like a customizable shortcut area, which is really nice to see. Maps and media is all easy to access, and it comes with things like wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, which we know and love. To add to that, your surround view camera system is pretty great in this vehicle, and I like how you can shift through the different camera angles, all with a click of a button, from minimal to sides to full, or just nothing at all.
