Ferrari reveals they are releasing their first electric vehicle | Today Show Australia
There’s a brand new car, brand new market getting into the market, I should say. And it might just surprise you as today a tech expert Trevor Long found out Ferrari set to release its first ever EV. And he was lucky enough to travel to Italy as a guest of Ferrari to take a look under the hood. [Music] Almost every major car brand is selling electric cars in Australia. And over the last few years, there’s been an influx of new brands from China doing so with great success. But where does that leave a company like Ferrari steeped in tradition racing high performance sports cars? That’s a company you might not associate with electric cars, but as their chief product development officer told me, they most certainly are making an electric car. Friday is going electric. It’s a new chapter of our history. It’s a very important day for us. Let me say an historic day because we strongly wanted to continue our edification journey starting many years ago. Also to enlarge, let me say the customer base to propose our our car. Ferrari aren’t even ready to show us the actual car yet. This is as close as we can get to see what they’re doing differently to other brands on the market. This is just the start of the Ferrari electric journey. We strongly wanted always that our product must be driven. This is the heart of the Ferrari DNA. A car that create performance but of course create emotion. Driving thrills. We say that the driving thrills are something that starts in the brain, explode in the heart, creating butterfly in the stomach, you know, and create a very big smile in the face when you drive the car and push you and your companion or your family to use the car massively every day, every moment. Let’s drive. An allect electric Ferrari though still needs to be a Ferrari. You see, in the same way that Porsche, when they launched their all-electric tyon in 2019, was at pains to point out that it was every bit a Porsche and its performance was outstanding. Ferrari has to do the same. Ferrari fans need to hear that an all-electric Ferrari is still a Ferrari. It’s not only, let me say, an electric car. It’s a Ferrari. First of all, first and foremost, it’s a Ferrari. What does it mean? What does it mean that a car that has an electric powertrain but that create the same emotion of the other Ferrari cars? And while there’s all those Chinese brands coming to market, there’s other big names with all eyes on Australia. Iconic American brand Cadillac have a range of electric cars coming to Australia. Their first, the Lyric, I’ve driven it. It’s a beautiful luxury SUV. And with a price tag of over $100,000, it’s instantly targeting the market of BMW and Mercedes. The transition to electric for brands like Ferrari, Porsche, Cadillac, even Lamborghini is fascinating to me because there’s never really been a cheap Ferrari in this instance. So, the fact that an electric Ferrari is expensive, I think is irrelevant because people are accustomed to paying a lot of money for a Ferrari or a Porsche or a Cadillac. The reality though is where the demand is because at this end of the market, this type of car that you have such an emotional connection to, it’s about the sound, the noise, how it makes you feel. And to the EV haters and skeptics, fear not. Ferrari is not abandoning its traditional roots. So relax. We’re not going all electric for all models. Of course, not all electric, but also electric. Ferrari are clearly taking this very seriously. They may be a little late to the EV race, but early next year, there will be a prancing horse electric car. Shut up and drive. Sounds good. Shareholders not loving it so much. I noticed the share price took a dive after that announcement
