THE LAND ROVER OF EBIKES? – ENGWE L20 3.0 PRO – REVIEW

Welcome to my review of the Angu L20 3.0 Pro. Ang were kind enough to send me the bike to let me review it. Now, I’m not going to lie, I really wanted to review this bike. I had really high expectations. I’ve already reviewed the L23.0 Boost and thought it was a fantastic bike. Now, this is meant to be 25 new meters more torque, a better motor, and more tech. So basically quite the upgrade and it’s 300 pound more. Now before I start telling you what I think of the bike, let’s have a look at the bits. Now the bike comes with 20 by3 in charang fat tires, sport wheels and 180 mm brake discs. Both the front and back brakes are hydraulic. Really nice to stop. They stop really sharply. The bike has plastic mod guards front and back which are nice and quiet. really good. The bike comes with front and rear suspension that’s really, really comfortable. The front suspension isn’t usual on off. It’s stages, so you can make it firmer or lighter depending on your taste. Has a nice thick padded seat, which is pretty wide and very comfortable. The only thing I don’t like about the seat though is the angle. It seems to tilt slightly forward, so I always feel like I’m sliding off it a bit. I’m constantly readjusting myself to sit back on where I want to be on it. So, I don’t really like the angle of the seat, but other than that, it’s fantastic. The pedals are nice chunky metal pedals. Decent amount of surface area, so they’re nice and grippy. I like the pedals. The bike has front and rear lights. Both nice and bright, both reliable. Now, the rear light is kind of weird because it’s not actually a brake light, but it is. So, basically, it doesn’t go off. You’re pressing the brake lever, it goes off motion, and it detects when you’re stopping or wobbling and stuff. It goes on automatically. It’s really good to be fair. The bike has a sevenspeed manic gear system which is nice and dependable used by a lot of bikes. I’m not really sure why they’ve used it though. The thing is this is a mid drive motor so it’s kind of gear dependent. So you need to use your gears on this bike more than you tend to on most other bikes. So, I would have thought the Shabano Walters 8-speed K system would have been a better option, but gone with the sevenspeed, and there’s nothing wrong with it. I just think the 8-speed would have been better and made more sense. It has a 48 volt 15 A battery. I got 40 miles from it for a single charge. Just a normal ride really, really good. Also, it’s fast charging, so it’ll charge that battery in two hours. Most bikes will take about six hours. So, that’s a really handy thing and I love the fast charging on these bikes. The motor on this thing is a mid drive motor. I don’t really know much about these things. On the website says it’s a My Vice X700 mid drive 48 volt and it’s got 100 new meters of torque. The display is a nice size, very visible, nice and clear color. Looks really good. The buttons are really responsive, really nice to use, really well made to be fair. The rear rack is a nice solid rare rack with a 25 kilo load limit. Really handy to be fair. Obviously in the pictures it shows the bag on the back cuz I’ve been using bag which is part of package air which again is a really nice package. Well worth investing in. Now the bike also folds in half like the L23.0 more boosters as well. The handlebars fold down, so it’s very handy to transport. Now, the bike will connect to Angware’s phone app. Now, usually I’m not really a big fan of these apps. They don’t really do anything useful. The Angware one kind of does because if you fill in all the details, it’s got basically your bike serial number and all that stuff on your phone. So, should you lose your bike, you’ve got proof it’s yours and stuff like that. But beyond that, they’re kind of useless. In honesty, I was expecting very similar from this on, but it’s really not. This is next level. This is actually a useful app. Now, on the app, you have the standard pretty useless things like turn your bike on and off, turn your bike light on and off, adjust your pedal assist. Now, I don’t like these that they’re useless. It’s far easier to just turn your bike on and off by pressing the button on the bike. Same with your lights and same with the pedal assist. Why would you change your pedal assist app when you’ve got buttons that can do it far easier? Makes no sense. Now, you have a button on the app that says find my bike. If you press that, it’ll show you a map of what your bike is. Your bike actually has a tracker inside it. Now, it actually blows my mind that they haven’t put these in before because these bikes were expensive and should you get it stolen, it’s gone. But a tracker kind of gives you a chance to get it back. Now, I’ve looked at trackers, third party ones, and I bought some off eBay and stuff where they come, they need a SIM card, they’re absolute nightmare to set up. I just give up. I’ve seen the Apple Air tags, but they require an Apple thing, and they don’t seem to be a Samsung equivalent. It’s just I don’t want stress to find my bike. I just want a nice simple thing, and I’ve never found one. But this puts one in. And I applaud Enra for doing that because anything that stops my bike getting stolen or makes it easy to hit it back is a win. Next, you have a button called ring bell, and that kind of makes it beep and flash for a while. I don’t think you can actually stop it when you pressed it. I think it stops by itself after a few minutes, so don’t press it unless you’re prepared to work for it. The bike has a built-in motion detector, and if you’re not prepared to repeat it for a few seconds, then stop. And I assume it’s set to repeat the cycle every so often. Not sure exactly how how much. Now, you can turn off the motion detection in the app because basically whenever you turn your bike off, the motion detection is active. It will also send a notification to your phone if you connected to the app telling that your bike’s been moved, which is really nice. Now, the alarm itself isn’t that loud, but it’s significantly annoying that if somebody was walking through a car park with your bike and that was going off, somebody would think they’ve stolen that. So, I think it’s effective for sure. Now, next on the app is the battery percent. Now, usually on an ebike, it tells you it’s got one to five bars, unless it tells you the actual percent and it’s pretty accurate. Now, the thing is, usually I charge these things by taking the battery out and plugging them in. But if you leave the battery in this thing and plug the charger into the bike, it’ll tell you on the bike the percent of the battery on the LCD. It’ll tell on the app as you log in. It’ll also send you a notification saying your bike’s being charged. when it’s fully charged. It’ll send you another notification, say your bike is charged. So, it actually tells you when your bike’s fully charged, which I’ve not seen any other bike. I love that aspect. So, yeah, I think the app’s really useful, well worth having. And in honestly, I hope that Enu really look at this app, the things like the Find My Bike and the motion detector, even the fast charge on the batteries. I hope they really look at that and go actually we need to implement this technology in our future range of bikes in every single one because they’re really useful. Yes, it’ll increase the price of the bike and the production costs but I think I’d be happy to pay a bit more to get this technology because it’s really useful. So yeah, please put this technology in all your bikes from now on. So the bike comes in smaller style box nice and packaged really well protected. As always you are required to do some assembly. So the front wheel needs to go on the front mud guard, the rear rack, the handlebars, the stem, the pedals, the seat on both lights, too. In addition, when you get it, the left lever will be the front brake and the right lever the back brake. If you’re in the UK, it’s actually meant to be the other way around. So, you’ll need to swap the hoses over to be in the right brake. Now, that may sound daunting, but it’s really not that hard. You basically pull the rubber cap off the brake lever, which will reveal this the bolt. You untighten the bolt till it’s completely out. And then the actual hose clips in. Now, sometimes it can be a bit stiff, so you might need a little bit of force to get it out. And you do that on both sides. And then clip them back in. Rescrew the bolt in. And put the rubber bit on. Make sure it’s nice and tight. And make sure you they’re extra careful when you’re screwing the bolt back in that you don’t cross thread it and get it on a dodgy angle. Like make sure it’s lined up and it screws easily. Apparently, as well, when you actually start messing about with hydraulic brakes, you should loosen the levers and have them level to the ground. Apparently, that affects it somehow. I don’t know, but that’s just what I’ve been told. I’d also say if you’re going to buy a bike with hydraulic brakes, you really need to learn how to bleed them because will get in the system and you’ll have to bleed them eventually or somebody will. And it seems daunting because most people don’t know how to do it. But once you know it’s really not that hard. So I’ll put a link in the description now to please your prayers. It’s not for me. It’s from another fella’s video. It explains it perfectly. It’s really easy to follow and yeah it’ll it’ll help you out. So it’s in the description. So what do I think of the bike? So my first impression was it’s really nice. That mid drive motor is really responsive. I’m not sure if it’s more responsive than the P275SE. Probably not, but it’s very close if it’s not. Also, this is one of Enar’s fully legal ebikes. It’s completely locked. You can’t unrestrict it. No throttle. It’ll only do 15.5 and that’s how it stays. So, it’s completely legal. The ride itself is really comfortable with the dual suspension and the tires. It’s nice and quiet, nice and relaxing. It’s a real lovely bike to ride. To be honest, now, as I said at the start of the video, I had high expectations for this thing, like really high. In my mind, this was going to be the new hill test champion by a mile because it’s 100 N, right? So, it should smash everything else. But that’s not quite how it works. So, I should probably explain the hill test. I have all the bike set 15.5 mph. pedal assist five and the hardest gear because I want the bike to do all the work and I’ll just minimalist pedal it. Now, if the bike has bigger wheels, I’ll change the gear to what I deem as cross pedaling. So, I’m not putting the effort in and the bike’s doing all the work. When it comes to torque sensors, again, I’ll have to pedal because if I don’t, it won’t move. But, I’ll pedal reasonably. I’ll usually tell you if I have to put an extra effort in. So, attempt one on the hill test. Pedal assist five, hardest gear. I go up and I won’t lie, it felt quite challenging to get up the hill. It felt like I put a lot of effort and that’s not what I expected. I really didn’t. Now, to be clear, when I say it’s quite challenging, I mean, for an ebike, usually it’s pretty easy to get up the hill because the bike’s doing the work. But, it did feel I was putting more effort than I should have to. Now obviously because the motors in the middle of the bike and not on the back wheel, the gears actually affect it. So as a first time ever, I went up the hill test again and actually use gears. Now it was significantly easier. It was actually really easy to get up the hill, but as a result, it ended up being slower. So, I got home and checked the hill test results. Hill test one, I was actually surprised that it was significantly slower than the other bikes. Like even bikes with 15 m of power beat it up that hill comfortably, which shocked me to be honest. So, I thought maybe I used the gears it get quicker. So, I checked hill test two and that was actually slower, which completely blew my mind. Now, as a reviewer, I do feel obliged to put in a bit of research and see what I’m actually doing. So, rather than just say, “Oh, it’s rubbish because it didn’t go faster,” I goo it and try to get some knowledge about the the mid drive motor works. So, ultimately, the mid drive motor is heavily dependent on gears. So, the lower the gear you’re in, the more power it’ll give you or the more torque it’ll give you. So, what does that actually mean? Well, if you look at a rear hub motor, which most of the bike, well, all the bikes I’ve used are when you’re going up that hill, if it slows down, then that’s a sign of the motor can’t give you anymore. It’s struggling. Now, if you change gear down, yes, it’ll be slightly easier to pedal because you you’re pedaling, but the bike’s doing most of the work anyway, so it won’t really affect it that much. And if the motor’s struggling, it can’t give you any more. That’s all it’s got. Now, on this mid drive motor, when you’re struggling to get up that hill and it feels like the motor’s not giving you the help it needs to, if you lower the gear, the motor’s now got more power to help you up that hill. So, the motor is consistently helping you. Also, if you stopped, it’s a damn site easier to start because the motor’s always helping you pedal. And the key here is it’s got more power in the lower gears, which means it’s going to be slower but more powerful. Does that make sense? Now, rather than accept Google’s explanation, I thought I better test it. Now, I kind of did test it on the second attempt because it was really easy to see up the hill, but it was slower than the other bikes. So, is there really a benefit to it? Because if the other bikes are quick up the hill, then you’re going to get about you a day quicker. And do you need that extra torque? Now, that’s actually a hard question to answer to be honest because that hill is pretty challenging. It’s not an easy hill by any standards. And it’s probably more severe than most people are going to face in day-to-day life, but it’s not quite severe enough to make the bikes fail in general. Most of them do get up even if it’s slower than they should do. So, I do like my hill test because it’s a good test. Now, there is another hill local that somebody suggested I should do a test on that and I was like, not a chance. That’s like way too steep. I’m going try to get on an ebike. But because this is meant to have more power, I took this bike though. Now, I was actually surprised how well this bike performed on the new hill because this hill is nasty. This isn’t one I’d want to even walk up and try and ride a bike up. It’s bad. But the bike doled its way up the hill. Happily pedaling along. It had no issues at all. It was good. But because I’m getting older, I’m unfit. As I got higher and higher up the hill, I was feeling it. I was getting a little bit tired. Even though the bike was actually managing it really easily, I was struggling and I feel let the bike down because it could have managed at all. No issues at all if it wasn’t for the lazy fat rider. Now, there was actually a point on the hill where I stopped cuz I was out of breath. And restarting was pretty easy. It was far easier than I anticipated and that’s due to the power you get from this mid drive motor. So it’s actually really really good on us. So ultimately I do feel this is a bike for hills. If the hill’s extreme, this is going to get you uphill that the other bikes won’t without too much effort to be honest. So this is a really really good bike for hills. Now I did say I’m not really sure why they give you a sevenspeed manual gear system. And I stand by that because if you put an eight-speed in and added a bigger cassette where so the biggest cog had more teeth, you’d have another level of these to uphills. So it get even steeper which would make it even better. Now the thing is with a mid drive motor you can do that. With a rear hub motor it makes no difference. It’s not going to get up the hill if it can’t get up the hill. So this for me is kind of like the Land Rover e rebikes. It’ll get you where you need to get. It’ll get you places otherwise can’t get you. And when you’re on flat areas, it’s nice, smooth, and comfortable to ride and a very chill, pleasant ride. So it’s a fantastic allrounder. Now, I’m not really sure how our weight works or the science behind it or any of that stuff, but during riding or setting off pedaling normally doesn’t really feel like you’re putting in any effort like you are, but no more than other ebikes. Now, when I’d done 40 mile on this, it felt like I’d rode a bike. It didn’t feel like I was dying or like I was really unfit. It just felt I had a little bit of achiness or a little bit of tension in my legs where I could tell I’d had some exercise. So, I do feel if you use this as a longterm bike, you’ll build up your cardio slowly and get fit using it. Whereas other ebikes, I don’t think you do because I’ve rode 35 40 mile on a lot of ebikes and usually my bum hurts and that’s it. Legs are fine, no working, none of that. So, they’re not really doing me any exercise because I’m putting it in the highest gear and the highest pedal assist. The bike’s doing all the work for me. Whereas this one, you have to do a tiny bit. And again, I suppose if you put it in the lower assist, it have to do more. So, this is a really good option. So, yeah, my conclusion is this is a fantastic bike. End have made a really good bike this time. They really have. I do think it’s an upgrade from the L23.0 no boost, but obviously it does work different than that. The app store stuff is fantastic. It’s really, really good. Well worth the money. And I’d highly recommend this bike. Now, I won’t lie, after day one of testing, and I’ve probably st 3.0 or boost. And if you’ve met me on Facebook or whatever and you’ve asked me about these bikes, I’ve probably stinged towards this one because the 100 N is more powerful. So therefore, it’s a better bike, right? And I think after one of test, I was feeling a little bit guilty about that because maybe it’s not. But now I’ve been up the bigger hill on it and seen it for myself what it can actually do. I’d absolutely recommend this. Solve the L23.0 Boost. I really would. So yeah, it’s a more powerful bike. I like it more and definitely recommend it.
