The First Electric OKADA in Nigeria

The world is going electric from cooking to trains to cars. But Nigeria’s electric revolution might be happening on two wheels and towards electric bikes. In a country that is still heavily reliant on motorcycles, not just for movement of people, but also logistics, electric bikes offer a low barrier to entry. And one company might be reshipping transportation around Nigeria with them. That company is Piro. And we are reviewing its Econ 450M1 model, but not just about the specifications, but what it actually means for business, your wallet, and how you move. [Music] Motorcycles, popularly known as Okadas, have been the heartbeat of Nigeria’s transportation story. Fast, reliable, Okaras have become part of the culture and livelihood. But despite their everpresent nature, the technology behind them has barely evolved until now. [Music] The 450 M1 has a sporty build that fits more into that sporty motorcycle segment based on like motorcycle classification cuz you look at it has this muscle feel. Makes it look very cool. And this bike is not only for commercial purpose, also for personal use. You can take it to work. You can use it to run errands. And if you want to use it as a delivery bike, you just strap the bag here and you have a delivery ebike. This bike has a carrying capacity of about 200 to 300 kg. And Iman’s weigh about 65 kg averely. So when you carry two people on your EON 450M1, you are barely scratching the carrying capacity this bike. In case you just joined, this bike is fully electric. No petrol, no gas, no diesel, nothing. You just charge it and on a full charge it can go 100 plus kilometers. I mean, depending on how you drive it because there are three driving modes to pick from. There’s sport, there’s eco, and there’s normal. The Eco 450 M1 is very, very easy to ride. Compared to other regular motorcycles, this one is very easy to ride. All you have to do is know how to ride a bicycle. So, you just start it and you allow the bike load up. You see it is in park and you push this button here. It is in drive. Now, they’re ready to go. You just go very very simple. So if you want to go faster, you just use the sport mode. Very very easy. And that’s one thing a lot of motorcycle riders these days struggle with cuz you have to do too many things at the same time. Start, clutch, press this, press that, all at the same time. But with Eon 450M1, you just start and you go. And yes, the dashboard is digital. So you can monitor your speed, your battery life, your trip. Everything you need to know about the health of your bike, you see on this small LCD screen. I really like these LED headlights here. Cool LEDs on a motorcycle. That is one of the coolest things about the Eon 450 M1. I can see another Spirro bike rider down here. Please, can you can you come? We have the same bike. I saw you when you were doing this. How long have you been riding bikes? More than 11 years. 11 years. Okay. When did you start riding this electric bike on SP? Yes. 6 months now. 6 months. Yes. And how easy was it to switch from normal gas powered motorcycle to electric? It’s fun. It’s fun. It’s fun. But you know, riding is sometime like people see riding riding an electric bike without no no sound, no no hard work. It’s like a big like celeb on his phone. What’s like compared to normal motorcycle? How much have you saved? Maybe like how much you spend on nor how much you spend on this one for it battery charging like what what’s the comparison far 7,000 7,000 4,000 5,000 depending the location you going but this one you don’t have to buy by buying. At this point, we had to talk to a regular bike rider and get some of these maintenance cost. My name is um Michael. I’ve been driving by less than 20 years. Every 2 weeks I spend 14,000 on top of this bike for service. Yeah. The maintenance is by 2 weeks time. I normally go to the maintenance. One oil, two air filter, servicing up carburetor, flush it, everything will be fresh. This one now for the fuel issue. Now I bought petrol yesterday which is 12,000. With electric bike when this falling, do you concern about falling? Does it affect any very funny? No, it does not affect anything. It’s it’s you can ride when there is raining. You can ride when there is sh. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Yes. Thank you for speaking with me. So, I’m going to continue my review now. But you heard from someone that rides this bike every day. I’ve bikes in the morning and has been nothing short of fun. One thing I absolutely love about the Spirro bikes is the security. So when you buy this bike, it comes with a tracker. Every Spirro bike on the road now is being monitored and you can geoence your bike. Business owners, this is for you. If the bike starts to move past a particular restricted area that you have set, you can shut it off. So if you say, okay, I don’t want my bike to go out of Lagos and somebody takes your bike out of Lagos, it will alert you wherever you are and you can shut off the bike. Apart from saving a lot of money on foiling every week, you also save a lot of money on maintenance because this is fully electric. If you don’t already get the gist, it uses a battery pack that is here. You don’t have engine oil, you don’t have oil filter, you don’t have carburetors. Just have your battery pack and you have a moving part here. So, maintenance is already 40% down with the Spiro eBike. I know at this point you have one question on your mind. crank. How do we charge this ebike? Don’t worry. Before this race starts, I’ll take you to the charging station where it’s actually called the swap stations. When we get there, I’ll tell you why. You recharge your ebike by just riding into any Spiro swap station around you. And in just two minutes, you swap out your low battery for a fully charged battery at the rate of 2,000 NRA. But this is where it gets even more interesting. You don’t always have to pay the full 2,000 NRA because there’s something called paying for the state of charge. What that means, let’s say you’re riding with 30% battery life left. That means you need 70% to get back to 100, right? You’re only going to pay for that 70%. At the rate of 20 NRA per 20 NRA time 70% is 1,400 NRA. You know what? Let’s see if you can talk to somebody around here that can give us more information about this. My name is Zubong Innocence. I’m actually the swap agent in Koi station. Oh yeah. So, how long does it actually take to ride in swap a battery and leave? Not much. It’s about 2 minutes at most. At most 2 minutes and I’m out. Yeah. A fully charged battery. Yes. How long does it take to charge the batteries? um roughly 4 hours. Let’s say there’s a blackout in the country. How do you make measure there are still spirits moving on the road? Okay, we have um backup plan which is um the solar panel and we also have what you call um BSS that we store charge then when there is no um light from the grip and we transfer the charge from the BSS to the main battery that we apply. What does BSS mean? That’s energy storage system step. Okay. Yes, brother. So, so those other batteries charge the new battery. Yes. So, like a power bank charging the new. Is it possible by any chance I come here and I don’t get a battery? No, it’s not possible. There’s always batteries on. Yes, we we are we are always 100% sure. So, every time even bikes are bikes are not battery always charging battery. Yes, the batteries are always charged. Each of the percentage is 20 N. Okay. So the total no the total percentage is 100 which is 2,000. So if I have stated% left and pay for 70%. Yes. 1,000 pro like that. Exactly. [Music] My name Carlo and they ride bike now for 5 years. They ride bike like 8 months now. The bike very easy because by the time I first say but when I call come close the bike very easy then normal automatic bike say you just on press the ready button the bike don’t ready to go it don’t help me well because I don’t I in terms of the money I make in a day I waste money they buy food so I use this bill now they save more like this for my house alone I fear for myself if I if I start work maybe if I want swap my swap you know they pass like 4,000 in a day compared to the buy before every walk I walk I buy like 9,000 10,000 in a day the bike they run I buy the bike they run [Music] they move But by me person the bike I say the bike very difficult to ride. But when I come closer to the say very easy I really adise people try because I know you know how to ride very affordable more economical for bike. You bet for yourselves. 2 minutes, 2,000 NRA in and you’re out. I know there’s one vital information you want to know. How much do these bikes cost? Don’t worry, I’ll tell you. [Music] the price right so these spir bikes cost between 1.3 and 1.5 million I’m not selling the bike so so if you want one can just go to any spir dealership around you and you get yourself one now I’m very curious if you got this bike what would it be used for would it be used for running around to the gym or to work or would it be used for business? Tell me in the comment section. My name is Crank and this is 234 Drive.
