Is a Surron Style Electric Bike Worth Buying in 2025?
Are these too risky to even own anymore? Alibaba shipments are getting seized. Cops are cracking down and prices are going up. Today we’re out in American Fork Canyon on a beautiful fall day and we’re going to talk about what the future of these bikes looks like. All right, let’s go find the entrance to this trail. Did rain a bit earlier today, so it might be a little bit muddy out, but shouldn’t be too bad out here on Pine Hollow Trail. We’ll just do this and see where we’re at and go from there. Let’s talk about the state of emot. But before we do that, let’s flash it back to the start of these things and what they represented. Not even five years ago, there was only a couple of these style bikes in existence. These were pretty unknown. The casual person had no idea that what these were. And overall, these were pretty budget friendly but lowerforming bikes. I mean, essentially the first generation Surons, just like this bike, are just mountain bikes with electric motors in them. Yeah, you do dirt bike stuff with them, but they’re definitely a lot closer to mountain bikes than they are a dirt bike. So, with all those things in mind, law enforcement did not really care about these bikes, and you could pretty much get away with anything in those times. So, point being, overall, this was a cheap, low-risk hobby to get into. Ooh, it’s a little muddier. Hold on, I got to focus on this hill climb. Wet leaves and mud does not equal traction, that’s for sure. But now, let’s look at the state of Emotos in 2025. They’re a lot more popular. A ton of people know what these things are. The overall performance is going up. We’re definitely getting closer to dirt bikes compared to mountain bikes with motors. But with that performance going up, also prices, you know, things are getting more expensive. Sure, you can still get a 2025 Siron for pretty cheap, but it’s honestly an underwhelming bike compared to what’s out there nowadays. New Suron’s got 8 kW of power, which, you know, 5 years ago would have been great, but now when you got like the E- Ride Pro 3 or even the Suron Ultrav for a,000 or $2,000 more, you know, those bikes really aren’t top the line anymore or even hold up a competition really. I uh heard a cool stream. Thought we’d check it out real quick. Oh yeah, this is cool. It’s a little runoff stream. Always got to stop and appreciate the little things on your ride. So, if you want to get into the emoto game now, it’s going to be a lot different than if you’re trying to get into it 5 years ago. I mean, one, it’s just overall a lot more risky to ride these in the streets now. Uh, this is cool. We got like an enduro log setup. Let’s give this a go. I don’t know which way to go. Well, you know, 5 years ago, you could really get away with the excuse like, oh, this is electric. You know, nobody really knew what it was. So, if you got pulled over, anybody cared, you could kind of get out of it. I know from firsthand experience, last season I had little to no issues. This year I’ve had a ton of issues. I mean, in a recent video, I got pulled over back to back in the same day. So, yeah. I mean, law enforcement knows what’s up now, and you’re not getting away with the old excuse of like, oh, it’s just an electric bike. Another thing is bikes are just overall more expensive. Now, the bikes you want or like, you know, I would buy if I was going to get my first bike are going to be at least $5 to $6,000. And that’d be like, you know, an Pro 3, MX5, Ultra B off Alibaba, something like that. So, it’s just a different time if you’re going to get into the Emoto game. Well, with all that being said, let me tell you why I think actually right now is the best it’s ever been for these bikes. One, as mentioned earlier, back in the day, you only had a couple options when it came to picking bikes. Nowadays, I mean, you got so many options, almost too many. The market is kind of oversaturated. Even though I would personally recommend just go ahead and getting a 72 volt or above bike if you’re starting out or getting your first one. That way, you can just keep it as long as it lasts and you won’t really need to upgrade. If you were on a budget, you still can buy a trip X or a new Suron or whatever and still get a bike to your house for under $4,000. Now again, the specs won’t be to what I think you would want nowadays. But I mean, look at me. I still love my trip X. It still holds up, gets the job done. But for my next bike, I’m definitely going to get something a little more power so I can accomplish things I can on this bike. Man, look at this view. So, along with more bikes being out than ever, there’s also more help and resources out than ever. If something goes wrong in your bike, you can probably find a video on how to fix it. If you need a part, there’s probably a shop that sells it. It’s not as much of an unknown to get into, like when they started. So although we have the negative consequences of these being more wellknown, like cops cracking down, still get the positive consequences of these being more wellknown, like there being a lot more online content available. So now that we’ve talked about where emotion, should you still buy one? Are they a thing you should still be looking to get into? We’ve reached the road. All right, let’s go find the entrance to this other trail. Cops are definitely cracking down. Depends on your area. I have issues in some areas more than others, even just in Salt Lake. But I mean, worst case, I guess we can just get these registered. Only reason I’m holding out is I guess kind of half the fun of these bikes, you know, like you didn’t have to register them. You didn’t have to run a license plate. So, not completely opposed, but just going to hold out as long as possible until it’s absolutely necessary. Worst case, just register it. Also, think I just saw the interest of the trail. So, with all the bike options, aftermarket support, and resources now, overall, man, these bikes are still a great buy. To be honest, I still like to have an electric and a gas bike at the same time because I just look at bikes as tools and so I think they all have different purposes. So, I love electric bikes for riding easier trails like this going to do just a quick ride around the neighborhood or local area. And I love how easy they are to maintain and they’re pretty reliable. But I also like to have a gas bike, too, for longer trail rides or even road rides. It’s nice not have to worry about your battery. And let’s be real, as insignificant it is, it’s just fun to have engine noises. Like there’s a different feeling between starting up a gas bike and starting up an electric bike. Doesn’t really matter. But I’m just saying I kind of like the gas bike feeling and that’s kind of what we do it for, right? I mean, at the end of the day, you’re riding owning bikes to have fun. But I really do think there’s a place for both. And I don’t think these bikes are going anywhere. I don’t know if you guys saw, but the VARG is going to be in Supercross next season. I think it’s going to be toned down to like certain specs. But right there, I mean, that’s an acceptance of electric bikes. But the reason they got to be toned down in their ban is because the performance is so good. Hey, how’s it going? Appreciate y’all. And I mean, right there, that’s a great example of why electric bikes are great. Even though it is legal to ride a gas dirt bike where we’re at right now, it’s a lot more intimidating to like a casual person. So, passing somebody on this is no big deal. They don’t even think twice about it. They let you ride by. On the gas bike, I mean, same deal. But, you know how it goes. Like, people just get upset. But that’s enough rambling for the day. I’m going to enjoy the rest of this trail ride. But, Emotos are not going anywhere, man. They’re here to stay. And if you’re thinking about getting into this world, I highly recommend it. But that’s going to do it for this one. Please hit that like and subscribe button and I will catch y’all next video. Hey, I had to pop back in real quick. Just want to show you guys. Decided to cruise down to Sundance Resort. And man, it is beautiful out here. Like fall leaves changing. Great set of mountains in front of us. Really no point to check in but to just say, man, get out and ride. Enjoy the rest of the warm weather while we got it. But seriously, that’s going to do for this one. See y’all. [Music]
