Mercedes-Benz S580e: Ultimate Luxury with Plug-in Hybrid Efficiency | Motorvision International

[Music] The best or nothing, that is
the Mercedes promise for its luxury sedan. Does this also apply to the
S-Class with hybrid drive? In 2021, the Stuttgart luxury class will hit the
road with a 510 horsepower double heart and a promised purely electric range of
100 km. We test the 580E plug-in hybrid. [Music] We have a battery here with an energy capacity of
28.6 kwatt hours and it should take us exactly 100 km purely electrically. So that is of course a
value up to 100 km. It always depends a bit on how you drive of course and the more power I give
here, the further the range decreases then again accordingly. To counteract the driver’s waste
of energy, the hybrid S-Class uses navigation data and operates its built-in intelligent energy
management. This is intended to expand the range. A 3 L inline 6-cylinder engine delivers
367 horsepower with 500 new m of torque. The electric motor provides an additional boost
of 150 horsepower and 440 new m. The perfect cooperation between the units makes the S580E
the top engine in the series apart from the AMG variant. [Music] Now we have a sloping road here
and then the vehicle immediately starts to break slightly again. But it doesn’t do this with
the brakes, but with the recuperation brake, which is actually also the electric motor, which
on the other hand can provide power to accelerate, but it can also act backwards as a dynamo in
the S-Class and thus generate power again and then save it back to the battery so that we
have even more propulsion. Not a disadvantage, but noticeable. The additional weight
of around 300 kg for the batteries. It pushes the total weight of
the hybrid to around 2.4 tons. In direct contrast to the S500 in the 580E, you will of course notice a little bit of
the extra weight due to the batteries that are in the vehicle and additional electrical
components. But the electric motor alone has no trouble moving this vehicle forward
dynamically in purely electric mode. I’m very excited to see what happens when I step
on the gas and the combustion engine also starts. The driving experience in the S-Class long version is unique. The 5 m 30 long limousine
with air suspension once again sets standards here. But when you step on
the accelerator, the calmness is gone. So now I really want to know and hit
it here. Now the engine starts and it pushes. Crazy. That’s really
suspicious of a sports car. So, it’s very impressive how these two
machines together catapult the S-Class forward. Slasson catapult. From the outside,
the hybrid is not immediately recognizable as such. Only the stickers and the EQ symbol
give it away. The digital light has 1 million micro mirrors per headlight.
This makes the night bright as day. High-tech and highquality workmanship also
dominate the interior. Displays from 7 in at the rear and up to 12.8 in at the front make
the luxury bends a multi-functional tool with almost 1,000 functions. [Applause] But if
you don’t feel like looking for all these functions because it doesn’t work while you’re
driving anyway and when you’re stationary it’s very nerve-wracking until you’ve clicked through
the entire menu. Then you have voice control and you can easily use it to say, “Hey, Mercedes.
What can I do for you?” I have a backachche. Gladly. I activate the massage. Oh, crazy.
She even recognizes what the solution to my problem could be. And then I notice that
there are massage balls in my back. And I can now lean back and drive to my destination
completely relaxed. The only thing missing is that the new S-Class drives itself, and the
Mercedes engineers have been working on that, too. The drive pilot option package
includes a level three autonomous assistant. This allows the driver to temporarily
withdraw from the driving task. And this combination of quietness in the interior,
extremely high quality materials and a drivetrain that allows purely electric driving. It’s really
a very, very exciting vehicle in combination. I have to admit I really like the S-Class
the best. [Music] With a plug-in hybrid, you essentially get two vehicles in one. Each
drive option for the S580E has advantages for a specific user profile. The combustion engine
is ideal for dynamic long-d distanceance travel and no infrastructure disadvantages. The
electric motor is suitable, for example, for driving quietly through environmental
zones. With its technical highlights, the S-Class once again remains
the benchmark among luxury sedans. [Music]
