From Heat Control to Starry Nights: The all-new electric GLC’s Panoramic Roof | Tech Explained

It might look like I’m on holiday, but I’m not in the Costa del Stutgard. I’m in a studio, and that’s a really hot light. But what if I told you that Mercedes-Benz has invented a car that keeps you cool when the weather gets warm? I’m Rob. I’m your tech explainer, and this is Tech Explained. This is the allnew electric GLC. It’s got this fantastic new iconic grill, which is illuminated and animated with 942 little dots. It’s got incredible ride comfort because it has airmatic suspension from the S-Class. And it even has rear axle steering and a huge frunk, perfect for my hat. And it’s the first car in the world with a certified vegan interior. But I’m going to show you this one. And it has the allnew seamless MBUX hyperscreen. This beautiful new hyperscreen is huge. It’s more than 39 in across pillarto-pillar, almost 10 million pixels, and it’s got a new character. We call it Little Benz. Hello. But today, I’m telling you about what’s above, a fabulous new panoramic roof. Let’s dive in. This huge panoramic roof is safe and strong. It’s got more layers than my winter wardrobe. The top layer is solid clear glass. Below that, there’s an infrared or IR coating made of silver that’s only 250 nanome thin. Infrared is part of the sunlight that makes things hot. So, this layer acts like sunblock, reflecting most of that heat away before it even gets inside. And to prove all this works, I’ve built this special heat box. On the right, the panoramic roof from the all new GLC. On the left, a traditional sunroof. Using this finger and this scientific button, I will warm up one of my hands. On the right, cool as a cucumber, but on the left, it’s getting quite hot. Oh, dinner’s ready. Next is the first of two layers of polyvinyl or gray PVB. This acts in two ways, kind of like a sunglasses, and it also blocks 99.9% of UV radiation. Then, and here’s the really clever bit, is the PDLC layer. This is polymer dispersed liquid crystal. When a small electric current is passed across these crystals, they line up making the roof clear. If you switch that electricity off, they disperse, which makes the roof opaque. There are nine panels above me and they can go from clear to opaque in a matter of seconds as the roof seamlessly closes and darkens. And then there’s a bit that looks like a starry sky at night. 162 Mercedes-Benz stars printed in a very special process. Then there’s another tough, strong layer of clear glass. And the last of the eight layers is a special coating that keeps the heat out in the summer and keeps the warmth in in the winter. And it’s 320 times thinner than my human hair, which is thin enough as it is. And what better way to relax than with a night under the stars. Let me know what you think of the new GLC in the comments, and I’ll see you again for another Tech Explained very soon. Good night. [Music]
