New Polestar 5 First Drive! The Best Polestar Yet??

Bonkers. This car is bonkers. It should be banned immediately. Do you want to go again? Not madly. Okay. [Music] It was in 2020 during lockdown that I first heard about a car that Polestar were developing. They called it the Precept. It was a concept car. I thought, “This is never going to happen. This is too low. It’s too swooshy. They’re not going to make this. Cut forward five years and they have made something remarkably similar. That there is the Polestar 5, a truly innovative new electric vehicle. Obviously high performance, obviously quite high price, obviously not something that we normally obsess about on the Everything Electric Cars show, but I think this one is a little bit different. I really encourage you to watch this episode. So this is everything electric cars and that is the polestar 5. Our three free YouTube channels on EVs and clean tech are funded by our fun-packed test drivetastic events in Farra, London, the Southwest, the North, Melbourne, and Sydney. And next up, everything electric farra and new for UK viewers. You can now buy a battery EV and much more at everythingleelectric.store. Now back to the episode. So this is my first drive of the Polestar 5. I’m driving on the the Milbrook Bowl, which is just the most amazing road. It makes driving and talking very easy because there’s no junctions or turnings or people coming the other way. You hope. Uh and uh it just goes around in a giant circle and I’ve driven around it a few times before in various cars uh slightly faster than I’m going at the moment. We may go faster in a bit, but that’s another story. But I just wanted to give the first impressions of what driving this car is like. Um they’re all the all the impressions are in the upper echelons of impressions like using the word supreme. It’s very difficult. Supremely comfortable, extraordinary acceleration, very quiet. I mean this is not a very uh this is a slightly noisy road and it’s a still a very very quiet car. And I mean, I think the the my my concern is about doing this car on everything electric cars is that it is, you know, clearly it’s a high-end. It’s an expensive car. It’s going to it’s going to start in five figures and go into six figures uh to buy one of these. But it is so exceptional and the technology behind it is, as I’ve said on many occasions, is so extraordinary, so next step. The materials in this interior are so special and it, you know, it’s a delightful environment to be in and it just has so much power. It’s ridiculous. So, this is really the kind of pole style uh, you know, flagship uh, you know, performance luxury GT. It’s just an amazing machine. The back seats are so comfy. You know, I don’t want to they didn’t want me to do any comparisons, but the the Maserati Fulgorei, amazing car. Back seats. Bit of a joke. Not really seats. The back seats in this. I mean, admittedly, it’s a longer car, but my goodness, it’s, you know, you would not be upset at all riding in the back of this car. It’s really lovely. It has 800 volt architecture, which means it can charge up to 350 kW, which means it can charge really fast. It has a 106 kWh usable battery. It’s got 112 kWh battery. 106 usable. Um, it has a range of, you know, Pstar are saying, I I would say around 320 to 340 miles depending on driving style and temperature and terrain and all those normal things. So, you know, supremely adequate, supremely amazingly gorgeous. If you get to drive one of these cars like I feel now, you’re really, really lucky. This is a special machine. Uh, I just think it’s it’s I’m really thrilled that Pstar have pushed the boat out on this particular car and it’s taken years of development and I’ve been hearing about that today from all the engineers and the designers, the pe people who choose the materials in it. Just incredible dedication and obsessive focus on making it as as good as they possibly can. So, it is a bit of a challenge. I think is they’ve thrown down the gauntlet to a lot of other car makers who make high-end uh you know expensive luxury cars. This is really setting the benchmark very high indeed. What I haven’t experienced yet is the kind of top speed that this vehicle can achieve. Uh we’re going to do a little test on this road cuz we’re not on a public road. We can go much faster than you would be allowed to normally. And I’m not going to be driving. I’m going to be driven by Matthew. He’s a professional driver and much much better than what I am. Now, as regular viewers will know, uh Jack would be able to do a beautiful description of this car, explaining the design features in it and the the the signature elements that that make Polestar stand out. I can’t really do that. I can do my best, but I think what’s better is that you just look at it and make your own minds up. I think this is an extraordinarily beautiful car. I think it’s amazingly well built. The materials they use in there, not only are they sustainable and recyclable and all those things, they actually think about the different materials. There’s a piece of cloth that I saw today that is used in some of the um the the fiber structure of the of the interior of the vehicle. And they went through 90 different types of cloth before they came. The 91st is the one that’s actually in the car. They are really fussy about what goes into this car, about what makes it move, about the experience for the driver. It is such a simple car to drive. And having driven some really nice cars, but with really complex software that baffled me from the get-go, a Polestar is very, very different. So, what we’re doing now, it’s it’s part of Milbrook’s safety procedure, which is very sensible, is we have to be helmeted to do a high-speed test. And so, we’re going to go around the Milbrook Bowl uh at well, I’m not going to say how fast we’re going to go. I’ll keep an eye on it. We’re doing 18 mph at the moment. Terrifying. And uh we’re about to pull out onto the bowl. We have to be careful because there are other vehicles doing highspeed tests on here at the same time. So, a lot of caution is required. They’ve already radioed it to make sure that everyone knows what’s going on. But it is the most remarkable piece of road it is. Is it 2 mi round? 2 miles round. So, Matthew is a very experienced driver. He’s driving us on the on the in the pole star. I wouldn’t be allowed to do this and I’m really glad I don’t need to to do this. But what it from previous experience of driving around this thing, what it feels like is you’re not really going around a corner. You’re going around a sloping world that just is in one giant hoop. It’s a bit like Halo, the computer game. It gets very confusing. So, we’re now doing 102 mph. I wasn’t even aware of it. 105. We’re going up into the top lane, which is the real high-speed lane. And now it feels like we’re just going up a hill all the time. It is the most disturbing experience. It is quite horrible. 146 147 152 Jesus wept. 157 I’m happy Matthew cuz I feel like my world’s gone sideways. Oh my god. So what did we do? I got 157. I saw. Yeah. But the thing is, the thing I cannot emphasize enough, there’s no strain to the car. The car didn’t feel like it was straining. So, I’ve driven around at those sort of speeds in a combustion car. The engine was screaming its head off. It was making so much noise. There was so much vibration. This thing, I didn’t even notice. I really wasn’t aware. When we passed 100 mph, it just felt really normal, like you’re doing like 45 down an A- road. Bonkers. This car is bonkers. It should be banned immediately. Do you want to go again? Not madly. Okay. [Music] So, what I’m going to do now is a naugh to 100 miles an hour and then 100 miles an hour to naugh on a special straight bit of road. And Matthew’s already done this before. A feeling he’s going to do it better than I do, but I’m really going to try hard. until I’ve got my foot, left foot on the brake, right foot on the throttle. I’m pressing the throttle right down and I’m letting the brake off in 3 2 1. There it is. Oh, that’s painful. 50 uh 70 100 110 Oh, I’m getting a bit of screechy sound. That is just terrifyingly genius. The fact that what is it nearly two two and a bit ton car. Does that tell you it’s So we did 0 to 60 in 2.8. Yeah. But it doesn’t tell you how fast you slowed down, does it? But we did. We basically did 0 to 90 mph in 5.3 seconds. It basically didn’t move that to 100 miles an hour. That is bloody extraordinary. Oh my god. I don’t want to do it again now. [Music] I’m really impressed with what Polestar have done with the Polestar 5. I think it’s an incredible car. I think it’s a really important thing that that they do that they take this step to develop a car like this, a completely new approach to building cars, to the how you fit batteries in to the to the range it’s got, which is remarkable, to the power it’s got, which is incredible. the new motors they developed for it, but also the materials they’ve used all the way through the vehicle to to minimize the impact that manufacturing the car has. And these things you can go, well, that’s just fancy for a big fancy expensive car for rich people. Yes, but what always happens with this is this technology does eventually trickle down. Unlike trickle down economics, which always means it trickles up. This does trickle down. This technology will start appearing in other vehicles that are much cheaper that are really more everyday kind of cars. So, I think it’s brilliant they’ve done this. I want to thank Polestar for letting me have a have a go in it cuz it was really extraordinary experience. And also thank Milbrook with the proofing grounds that were on here today uh where we’ve been test driving this car. It’s so exciting to see something a big step like this. That’s all. I won’t go on about it anymore. Please do tell your mates about everything electric cars. Please do subscribe if you haven’t done already. And as always, if you have been, thank you for watching. Robert gets windswept by the new Polestar 5 (literally), and it’s everything he never expected to see hit the road.

Back during the pandemic, Robert first heard whispers of a concept car he didn’t think would ever become a reality.

Fast forward five years, and here it is, remarkably close to the original vision. A bold, high-performance EV that’s pushing boundaries in design and innovation.
