August Electric Car Sales Report Australia – BYD up 141%, Tesla Model Y Leads

By the end of July this year, new figures from the Australian Automobile Association showed a record-breaking quarter for electric car sales in Australia. The AAA’s quarterly EV index shows Australians bought nearly 30,000 new battery electric cars in the June quarter, up from 17,91 sales registered in the 3 months to the 31st of March. However, August, the month just passed, was even better. EV sales in Australia hit 10% for only the second time in Australian history. YouTube’s new algorithm means that you’re often not getting all of our videos in your feed. There’s 7,500. I’m pretty sure you’re probably not seeing a lot of them. In the description, there is a link to our newsletter. Click on that and you can get an update every day of all the latest news in the electric car industry with BYD and Tesla leading and increasing their sales versus the previous month. For one, BYD sales were up 141%. Hello my friends, welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans. You’re watching the Electric Viking. Great to have you with us. A lot of commentators are saying that um EVs EVs are not going to ever succeed in Australia. A lot of Australians really genuinely think and I’m being totally honest with you, there is thousands and thousands of Australians who think that EVs are a fad and there the fat is going to be over soon. Give it a few years time, no one will be buying them. However, if you actually look at the stats, the numbers, the reality on the ground, it shows that EV sales are stronger than ever. Even more than that, it also shows that Chinese automakers are taking Australia by storm. In August of 2025, Chinese brands achieved a national first in Australia, capturing 20% of Australia’s entire car market. Now, the truth is that’s just Chinese brands, not cars made in China. If you’re talking about cars made in China, it’s a lot more than 20%. A distinct change is in the wind for the Australian car market with four Chinese car makers claiming places in the top 10 new car sales in August 2025. BYD, Great Motors, MG, and Cherry were in sixth, 8th, 9th, and 10th place. And Tesla was um pretty close behind, I believe, in 11th place. So, with 104,000 cars sold, Chinese car makers took 20% of the market. That’s just the brands themselves. When it comes to cars that were made in China, that figure is actually well over 30%. So, which were the most popular electric cars in Australia in August? Well, interesting sales numbers here. First of all, I should point out that EV sales were around 10%. They’re officially 9.7%, but that doesn’t include Xpang sales. If you include Xpang sales, I believe that figure is pretty close to 10% of the market, 1 in 10. Not great in comparison to Europe or China or particularly not Norway, but um it’s still definitely an improvement. I can see EV sales hitting 20% by the end of next year. What do you guys think? Maybe I’m being optimistic, but I think it’s going to happen. Interestingly, in August, plug-in hybrid sales actually declined from previous months with 3,96 plug-in hybrids sold during the month, down from over 4,000 in July. So, more than twice as many EVs were sold as plug-in hybrid as plug-in hybrids were sold. You can see here this idea, right? I should point out the ABC they said on the 25th of August that plug-in hybrids are taking over EV sales. It wasn’t meant to happen this way. That okay, this is their summary. Sales of plug-in hybrids are booming while the market share of full battery electric vehicles is not. Um, so yeah, I mean clearly you can see actually plug-in hybrid sales went down in spite of the fact that there’s some amazingly good deals from some of these Chinese automakers for FEVs. And that’s also interesting to see because BYD’s plug-in hybrid sales globally fell by 23% in the month of August. So, the bestselling cars, the bestselling EVs in Australia. Let’s just have a look at the list. It’s quite interesting. Number one was the Tesla Model Y with 2,324 deliveries. I think part of this increase in Tesla Model Y sales. I don’t believe it’s full self-driving. You know, the news about that. That could be a small factor, but I don’t think that’s a big factor. I think it’s more about the fact that the Model Y now has 600 km of range. The price didn’t change. The range went up by 56 km. Uh, and it’s, you know, it’s a good value for money car. BD Cine 7 was in second place with 1,413 deliveries. The Cine 7, it’s definitely a good EV. I just think there’s better choices out there, and I’m not really sure why it’s doing so well, but kudos to BY. They’re obviously doing a really good job selling cars up 141% versus the same month of last year. In third was the BD Seal with 623 deliveries, 20 deliveries ahead of the Tesla Model 3 with 603. Build 803 was next with 594. Bu Dolphin was next with 434. The Jile EX5 was next with 401. I’m curious to know if you bought a B 803, which is about the same price as a Julie EX5, and clearly a lot of people did. A lot of people chose to buy an Ato3 instead of a Julie EX5. Why did you do that? I’m curious to know what your decision was behind not buying the EX5, which is, you know, significantly bigger and nicer inside the car vehicle. About the same range, but it’s quite a bit nicer on the inside and is quite a bit bigger on the inside. It’s um you know it’s about 5% to 10% bigger. I’m c kind of interested. Let us know in the comments why. Next you’ve got the Kia EV5 with 367 sales followed by the Kia EV3 295. MGS5 284. Volkswagen ID4 219. Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV on runout sales. They’re not going to keep making that car. 166. Mercedes-Benz EQA 132. Pstar 4. Good sales from Polestar 120. Toyota BZ4X 114. MG4 104. Pstar 291. Volvo EX40 82. Zika X79. Volvo EX3071. Volkswagen ID Buzz 70. Audi Q5 Ron 57. Audi Q4 Ron 56. The new Hyundai INC9 or Hyundai 9 has been a complete sales disaster. Only six were delivered. It only comes in one version at $125,000. There’s only one version, $125,000. That could be the part of the reason why it’s not selling and why the Kia EV9, which is I think not as nice of a car as the Hyandai 9, while the Kia EV9 is clearly beating it in the sales figures. So, which are the cars that really aren’t selling? Which EVs really aren’t selling, and you’d think they might? Well, the Kia Nero EV, only six deliveries. The Nero used to be a pretty popular EV. The Ford Mustang McKe, only six deliveries. The Subaru Sultterra, only five. The Genesis GV74. BMW i7, that’s understandable. Very expensive car. Four. Audi Ron GT4. Now, here’s a big surprise to me. The Hyandai IonX 6, which has just been upgraded with extra range for more features. Only four sales. That’s a surprise. What about the MG Cyber? Only two. The Lotus Electra. I mean, one that’s fair enough. I mean, it’s quite expensive. However, the Coopra Born, which was quite a nice EV, only one, but I think that’s because they’re, you know, on runout. There’s a new model that’s um it’s been the old one’s been superseded. So anyway, those are the sales numbers for Australia. Was one of the best months in Australian history for electric car sales. You know, credit to some of these companies that are doing really well. But here’s the thing. These numbers don’t include the fact that Zika pre-sold 2,000 of the Zika 7X. So really, I mean, if Zika was actually able to deliver on that, even if they could deliver on half of those, if Zika had had stock of those to deliver say a thousand of them, then these sales numbers would have been boosted significantly. So what we’re going to see, I think, is towards the end of the year, if these sales numbers can hold steady, we’re going to see Zika jump up these sales charts. They’re going to be delivering probably a couple of thousand 7Xs over the next, I believe it’s coming in October. So October, November, December. And that should boost these sales figures pretty significantly. I think these results are pretty good. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for watching. [Music]
