The 2025 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo Is the Coolest Electric Car

This is the new 2025 Porsche TYON GTS Sport Turismo, and it’s fully electric. But before enthusiasts complain, it’s also a wagon built by Porsche with almost 700 horsepower. If you’re going to go electric, this is the cool car to get. And today, I’m going to review it and show you all of its quirks and features. [Music] All right, time for the quirks and features of the new TYON GTS Sport Turismo. Starting off with what’s changed to make this new. The answer is not really all that much, but there are some upgrades to the TYON for 25. The biggest is there’s new and improved EV hardware, larger battery to allow for faster charging, and presumably a better range than before. The EPA hasn’t weighed in with its estimates on this car’s range yet, but it’s likely going to have a longer range, and like I said, it does charge faster. There’s also a new performance battery that’s available in the latest TYON that is lighter weight and yet still carries the same range and fast charge times. Now, one other TYON new feature for 25 is the addition of a turbo GT model. This has over a,000 horsepower and starts around $230,000. Unfortunately, that’s not this, but I do hope to test that at some point relatively soon. Now, aside from the Turbo GT model, the new base model 25 TYON starts right around $101,000. And like before, they’re still offering the TYON as a sedan or a wagon model like this. Now, most of the TYON wagons are called the Cross Turismo, and they come with sort of lifted suspension and SUVish styling, except for this one. The GTS is instead called the Sport Turismo and it loses that like raised ground clearance off-roady look and instead you get the wagon body style with sort of the sporty TYON overall look. Now the wagon versions, the Cross Turismo and the Sport Turismo are a little bit more expensive than their TYON sedan counterparts. This one, the GTS, starts around $152,000, which is big money, but it has big performance. $596 horsepower, Porsche says. Or you can press a button on the steering wheel for overboost and briefly get an extra almost 100 horsepower. Quickly bumps things up to 690 horsepower. And it also boosts torque 50 lb feet. just for a short spurt. It’s like 10 seconds, but that is your maximum horsepower figure in this car. Now, all-wheel drive is standard on all of the TYON wagon models, and this one does 0 to 60 in about 3.1 seconds, which is obviously tremendously quick. It’s also worth pointing out that this car has a new active ride suspension system that Porsche says will dramatically reduce body roll. And I got to say, from driving this car around, it certainly works. More on that when I get behind the wheel a little later in this video. Also worth pointing out in the GTS models like this one, the performance battery is standard. It’s optional on other TYON models. Like I said, lighter weight, but it is standard in the GTS since it’s one of the performance versions. But anyway, let’s talk quirks and features. Starting with one of its quirkiest quirks, which is that when you open the door, the TYON rises up to greet you. This car comes with air suspension, so that’s a trick they can make it do. You open the door and it rises up to make it easier to get in and out. I assume this is a response to a lot of people saying they prefer SUVs cuz climbing in and out is easier. Well, here’s an opportunity to have a performance car driving experience, but still SUV entry and exit because it can lift itself up almost immediately when you open the door to make it easier to climb inside. And as you might expect, when you shut the door and walk away, the car locks and then the air suspension lowers itself back down to its normal position, so it doesn’t have to maintain that higher height for entry and exit. Now, also worth pointing out on the outside, another change for 25 is that the front end design for the TYON has changed. It’s been revised. Not dramatically, but it’s changed and I think it’s better. You lose kind of that weird line that went from the headlights to the lower part of the bumper. It always gave it kind of a strange look up front. They’ve sort of modernized and normalized the front end look of this car and I think it’s improved. Also worth pointing out that this TYON has this carbon fiber front splitter down here. It looks very cool, very sporty like you’d expect from the GTS. Moving further down the car, one interesting quirk undoubtedly is the chargeport door. To open it up, you slide your finger under this little panel that sticks out from the car and then the charge port door automatically opens up and retreats inside the car. That is certainly interesting so that you can plug in your charger to charge the battery. Now, Porsche has charge ports on both sides of the TYON, which is actually a pretty cool feature. Doesn’t matter where you pull up to what side charger, you can easily charge, even if the cable is not particularly long. And speaking of chargers and electricity, one interesting item about this car is the rear light bar. When the lights are all off, you look in and you can see the design has this sort of unusual circuit boardy pattern all throughout the rear light bar. I guess that’s intended to make the car sort of stand out and seem futuristic and electric, which it does. Now, even cooler than that, though, is when the car is turned on and the lights are on, you can see the tail lights up and the Porsche script lights up on the back, too. All the letters individually in Porsche light up, which is very cool, right along with the light bar. That is a neat look for this car. And again, it gives it kind of a distinctive and cool futuristic feel in back. And since we’re talking about the back of the TYON, and since this is an important part of the car, since this is the station wagon sport Turismo, let’s get into the cargo area. Now, to do that, there’s a little button integrated into the rear bodywork. It’s pretty hidden, but it’s right here in the center. You press it and then the tailgate rises up automatically and gives you access to the cargo area. You actually have a pretty decentsized cargo area back here. a lot bigger than the trunk that you get in the regular TYON sedan. In fact, it’s a pretty significant advantage over the sedan if you’re looking for practicality, which was an issue that I always had with the station wagon version of the Panamera because the regular Panamera is already a hatchback with a pretty good cargo area. The wagon didn’t really add much practicality. But in this case, the regular TYON is a sedan with sort of a normalsiz trunk. the wagon version. This car really does enhance practicality if that’s what you’re looking for. And of course, if you get a non GTS model, you also get the cross turismo look, the raised ground clearance, a little added capability in addition to the practicality. But anyway, just in case you’re looking for more cargo space, this car delivers slightly. You have little storage compartments on either side, sort of the corners in the cargo area. And you can lift up a small part of the cargo storage floor, and that also reveals extra storage if there are some valuable, fragile items that you don’t want rolling around in the back. Now, this car also has folding second row seats, so you can fold down the second row, the rear seats, and have, of course, even more cargo space back here if you’re trying to transport something large. And you also get a front trunk in the TYON. There’s no engine up there, so they can use that space for a front trunk. You open up the front storage compartment. You can see there is a storage space here. It’s not huge, but it is bigger than what you get in a lot of other electric vehicles. Sometimes it’s like flat almost, only big enough for paperwork. Here, you could certainly get some luggage into that compartment. Not as big as an actual engine that you’d see under the hood of a lot of cars, but decent size space. Then next, we move inside the TYON GTS. The interior of the updated 25 model is actually very similar to the interior of the outgoing TYON. Not a lot of significant changes in here, but there are some significant quirks cuz this car has always had some rather interesting quirks and features. One example, this little button that hangs off the center of the steering wheel. It’s actually a dial and this adjusts your drive mode. You can see it’s labeled drive mode. You can change that from normal to sport. Nothing too unusual there except in the center of this dial, this button is your push to pass button, which gives you a temporary overboost. This is how you access the extra 100 horsepower that I mentioned earlier. You press that button, you get 10 seconds of extra power and torque for a quick pass on like a two-lane road or the racetrack if you’re there. Next up, next unusual quirk inside the TYON is the climate control vents. You can see the vents are here and obviously they blow out air, but you can’t adjust their placement or location where the air is coming out. If you want to adjust it, you actually have to go into a screen in the climate menu. You can see right here. And then you move around the air placement so that you can have the air blowing exactly where you want. No more just moving the climate vents with a simple dial or a switch. You got to go into the screen. And speaking of unusual controls, how about the gear selector, which you can see is here. It’s this little switch. You push it up for reverse. Drive is down, neutral is somewhere in the middle, and park is a button off to the side. This doesn’t seem like an old school typical gear selector big thing in the center. Porsche’s gotten rid of all that. Even in the gas powered cars, this is the brave new world of Porsche gear selectors. Now, other interesting quirks in this car. For one, the passenger has a display screen. You can see it’s mounted here in the dashboard, restricted just to the passenger. In fact, from the driver’s point of view, that screen cannot be seen. You can only see it if you’re sitting basically directly in front of it in the passenger seat. And it essentially just replicates exactly what you’re already seeing in the center screen, which is approximately 6 in away. Seems like a bit of an odd choice, but that’s what they’ve done. Now, the passenger screen does have one cool benefit, which is this gauge icon screen that you can sit there as the passenger and sort of watch in real time, the speed, the altitude, the pitch, roll, the gforces of the car, all of that stuff. I don’t think there’s a spot in the center screen where you have access to all of that in one, but if you’re the passenger, you can watch it on your screen. Otherwise, you can just pull up the usual navigation, media, music, etc. And speaking of screens in this car, the gauge cluster is just one big screen. It actually looks pretty cool. It doesn’t even have a frame around it. It just sort of a screen and then it stops. It looks futuristic. But I love this screen because of its excellent configurability. And it really is impressive. You can adjust all versions of this screen, sort of the left, right, and center menus. And you can make certain things larger or smaller if you want. I really love just how configurable this makes it. You can see basically whatever it is that you want to see, kind of customize it to exactly your view that you’ll see directly below your line of sight while you’re driving, which is neat. Now, the center screen, sort of the main infotainment screen in this car, nothing particularly unusual or exciting there. Despite the refresh for this car, the screen is not dramatically changed. It is relatively intuitive, easy to use, responsive to the touch, and there’s a cool performance part of this screen. You tap the performance app and it’ll show you like current braking power, accelerating power, how much power you’re using, state of charge, over boost, all that stuff in these various different performance pages here in the center screen. More interestingly and unusual is the lower center screen. You can see here below the climate vents, sort of in the center stack. This has a couple of interesting functions. One is your climate controls. You can adjust the temperature, the fan speed, all your usual climate controls here. No physical buttons. It’s adjusted in this screen. Now, below the climate controls, you have this little pad here. And interestingly, this is a trackpad that you can use to make selections for the upper screen. So, if you don’t want to reach up to the upper screen, which is a touch screen, you can reach down to the lower screen and use this pad to control the upper screen. It seems a little redundant, duplicative, but it’s there so you can decide exactly how you want to interact with the upper screen. By the way, this lower screen also offers one other interesting function. If you tap on this little part that pops down with three lines, then you can see the climate controls lower a bit and reveal a few icons at the top of the lower screen. This also controls the upper screen and it’s sort of your shortcut buttons to get back to the main functions of the upper screen like navigation or music. You can have that right here on the lower screen so you can use it to control the upper screen. Needless to say, a lot of screen stuff in this car. It is after all a futuristic electric vehicle. Then next up we move on to the back seat of the TYON GTS Sport Turismo. And one thing I like, you open up the door and you can see TYON is illuminated there. Looks cool. Interestingly, up front they’ve illuminated TYON GTS, but in back we only get TYON. There’s not enough room for GTS. So, rear passengers have to be comfortable not having the trim level when they climb in. Thankfully, they have still kept the Porsche script projecting out of the bottom of the doors for both front and rear doors. So, you still have that in the back even though you don’t have TYON GTS illuminated. But anyway, you climb inside here and you can see the back seat is decent sized. You got okay knee room. These sort of sporty front hard back seats do steal some space, but there’s good headroom, good passenger room in back, except for the middle passenger. Ostensibly, this is a five-seater car. Two up front, three back here. But it’s really not true in practice. The middle seat is essentially unusable. For one thing, the hump in the center of the floor is absolutely massive, which to me doesn’t make a lot of sense in an electric car that doesn’t have a drive line running through the middle, but that’s the situation. You also have a screen here, which I’ll cover in a second, that would block your seat room. And the middle seat itself is just tremendously narrow, the bottom and seat back to the point where the bolsters for the outboard seats actually steal space from the middle seat. I guess because they figure they know most people aren’t really going to use this rear center seat. Nonetheless, it is here in case you need to use it in a pinch. Now, also back here and interesting is climate controls for the rear seat, which is nice to see. And they’re activated with a screen just like up front. And in fact, the climate vents in the back seat can again not be moved with a little switch or a little dial. Instead, you have to go into this climate screen and move them around on the screen. not just for the front passengers, but even in back to adjust the position of the climate vents. That is real commitment to a rather unusual cause from Porsche. But anyway, beyond all that, if you’re looking for cup holders back here, they’re accessed by dropping the center armrest. If you have someone seated in the center, you don’t get cup holders. But if they’re not here, you can drop the armrest, rest your arm, and you can put drinks in your center cup holders. But this car is not about rear seat comfort. It’s about driving experience. So, let’s get it out on the road and see how the Tyon GTS Sport Turismo drives. All right, driving the TYON GTS Sport Tourismo. And I got to say, this car is excellent. I’ve had it for a couple of days, been driving it around, and it is a wonderful car. You know, the Teslas are so fast and you can be goated into thinking if you’re a Tesla person, uh, that they are the greatest performance cars ever because of how fast they are. But it’s not until you get into a car like this, do you truly understand what separates a fast electric car, which is a lot of them, from a great performance car. This car is not just fast, which it is. It isn’t very fast, and that’s without using the new push to pass. This car is not just fast, it is also dynamically absolutely fantastic. I have loved this about the TYON ever since I drove the very first one years ago. I don’t even remember how long now. 5 years ago maybe. But it’s just it’s such a great car. It is. I’ve always said this, you know, people complain, oh, Porsche, the TYON, it’s an electric Porsche. But it’s still a Porsche and it feels like a Porsche and it drives like a Porsche. Cornering is absolutely fantastic. It is razor sharp. Steering is immediate, precise, quick. There’s push to pass. And wow, that is a lot of power. It just hauls. It just absolutely hauls in a in a truly really, really quite impressive way. In all honesty, it is a very, very fast car. But again, speed is not the entire story with this car. This car is also all about the way that it handles. And to me, it is absolutely incredible just how flat it stays, just how quick it steers, especially considering ultimately this is not a sports car. It is effectively a station wagon uh that just feels this quick and this lively and this incredibly dynamic and and spelt like just a it just feels like little and small, even though, you know, it’s actually a pretty big and pretty heavy vehicle. Now, obviously, in terms of excitement, the majority of the excitement comes from this kind of throw it around nature this car has. It’s just sporty and quick and fast and eager to change direction in a cool way. Flooring it to me no longer delivers the thrill that it kind of once did for cars like this just because so many EVs are fast now. And it’s pretty clear that driving this car around, it sorely needs that feature that Hyundai has where you shift gears electrically. Um, it just adds so much performance to the feel of the performance car and I have to assume Porsche is going to come with that. Uh, and basically every performance EV will probably come with that at some point. It just really changes the nature of the thing and makes it better. Um, but right now it’s just sort of point and shoot in a straight line. It is fast, that’s cool, but you know, nothing to write home about in terms of differences compared to other EVs. Where this car stands out is dynamically, is going around corners, is shooting through gaps. Like this car is uh very impressive in staying flat and just making excellent excellent cornering. I it’s it’s an impressive really an impressive car. I I recently had the new 911T at my house and I did a review on that. I don’t find that car to be dramatically more adept in terms of handling than this one. This car is feels just as quick to change direction and it that is a really really impressive thing. Now, it’s also worth pointing out this car is a pretty luxurious which is also true of the 911. It should be said, but this car is also pretty luxurious. It’s quiet um driving around and the ride quality is good. There’s a lot of interior room, at least up front. This is a really great all-around car. That’s one of the cool things about these high performance wagons, whether it’s the Panamera Sport Turismo, the AMG wagon, the RS6, or this car. Um, and of course, the added benefit here is it’s an EV, you don’t have to stop for fuel, and of course, the environmental benefits, and also the incredible acceleration. Um, but it really can do it all in a very impressive way. It’s just pricey to do it all. Uh, but that’s that’s what you what you get if you want a car that can do everything. And this one really can. And so that’s the new 2025 Porsche TYON GTS Sport Turismo. It may be an electric car, but it’s a pretty appealing one. It has wagon practicality, amazing power, and incredible handling. It really feels like a Porsche. This car does it all. It’s expensive, but it does it all. And now it’s time to give this TYON a Doug score. And the Doug score is here. 71 out of 100, which is actually the exact same score as the previous 2022 model. The new one is great and improved in some wonderful ways, but not enough to bump up any specific points in any specific category. Regardless, it puts on a very strong showing against some very strong rivals in the high performance luxury practical car segment. Though, I’d still rather have an AMG E63 wagon for its better practicality, even if it does give up a couple points to the Porsche in the weekend categories. race.
