Willem Verbeeck | Driving with soul

The first time I stepped into a 911 was such a memorable experience and I immediately knew that these cars were something special. You start by turning the key on the left side of the steering wheel and hearing the flat 6 engine come to life behind you. [Music] Not only are these cars quick and they handle great, but they’re full of personality. And I think that’s what stuck with me most all these years. My name is William Verbique. I’m a photographer and this is my Porsche 996. As a photographer, my approach to taking pictures is extremely analog. I shoot with older film cameras and I make prints in my dark room. It’s extremely satisfying and it forces me to think carefully about each frame that I shoot. In a lot of ways, I think this 25-year-old Porsche mirrors my approach to photography. The manual transmission and the cable throttle create such a pure analog driving experience, which I very quickly fell in love with. [Music] Buying this car was an experience that I’ll never forget. Today might be the day. My stomach is upside down cuz I’m nervous. Oh, dude. It looks clean. I found my 996 400 miles away from home and the drive back was one of the best experiences ever. I chose avoid highways on my navigation and drove 8 hours on some of the most beautiful back roads in California. It was the perfect opportunity to get to know this car and experience how it handled those twisty roads. [Music] I’m a huge car nerd at heart. I have an obsession with pulling everything apart and learning how it all works. I think it creates an even deeper connection when you drive the car. You feel every component of the engine behind you doing its job. And nothing is more rewarding than enjoying a drive after all your hard work. It’s become a ritual of mine at this point on a weekly basis to drive this car up my favorite mountain road in Los Angeles, which is Angelus Crest Highway. It’s a beautiful stretch of road with incredible turns and such amazing scenic views. It’s also a great way to escape the heat of Los Angeles as you climb in elevation up the mountain. And I think there’s no better car for it than a 911. Heat. Heat. N. [Music]

Photographer Willem Verbeeck’s approach to creativity is deeply analogue, from developing film to driving his 996. In this film, he shares why this car mirrors his mindset and how a cross-California road trip changed everything.
