The 2026 Subaru Uncharted Is A Quirky Performance Minded Crosstrek Sized SUV
Nearly three years ago, Subaru began their journey into the electric vehicle space with this model, the Subaru Sultterra. It was a joint effort with Toyota, and it was a decent first entry, offering around 224 mi of range and 215 horsepower from its dual motor all-wheel drive powertrain. Subaru actually gave it a huge update for 2026, giving it more power and more range. Now, of course, they followed it up by showing this vehicle here earlier this year, the allnew Trail Seeker. It’s essentially an electric Outback offering even more power and around 260 mi of range along with its size that’s around 6 in larger. But of course, today we’re here at Spring Studios in New York City because Subaru is ready to show off their third electric vehicle offering. This right here is the first ever Subaru Uncharted. It plots to chart a new course for Subaru because this is essentially the brand’s first sporty coupified SUV that happens to be all electric. So, now that we’re seeing the allnew Subaru Uncharted in the sheet metal, let’s go ahead and take a detailed first look. [Music] Now, Subaru has had a really busy past year. In addition to introducing a fully revised version of the Sulttera and the new Trail Seeker, we also have two new hybrid options from the Cross Trek and the Forester. So, this new Subaru Uncharted was kind of an unexpected reveal here today in New York City. But, as you can see, it has the same corporate face as the other electric vehicles from Subaru. First of all, this color that I’m showing you is called habanero orange. It is an exclusive color, of course, to the Subaru Uncharted. And this particular trim that I’m showing you is the midtrim known as the Sport. Subaru will actually offer it as a front-wheel drive version called the premium frontwheel drive, which will be designed to be the price leader. It’s the first front-wheel drive Subaru that the company has offered in years. I can’t remember the last time they offered that. And then of course they’re also going to show off a fully loaded GT version. We’ll talk about the differences later on, but let’s go ahead and talk about the exterior styling at the front fascia because obviously it wears the new corporate face of Subaru’s electric vehicles. It’s got their new six-point uh LED design for the daytime running lights. The headlights are actually technically divorced from the daytime running light element. You can see they’re down here. They’re a projector style. You also have these kind of gloss black accents that kind of goes well with the habanero orange. You have some well integrated parking sensors. The new Subaru logo of course, which also is illuminated, which is a really nice upscale touch. And then this model, even though it’s the uh sport trim, still comes with the full front camera 360 system, which is actually an unexpected feature that I was expecting Subaru to reserve for the higher trims, there is some unpainted CL cladding down here. But in recent years, Subaru has really been trying to be a little bit more restrained with the cladding. Previously, they were getting a little bit too um I guess overzealous with some of the cladding on their vehicles, but it’s really nice looking, particularly on this model here, especially in the orange color. Now, I can’t pop the hood and show you guys what’s underneath here because this is a very early prototype, but here in America, Subaru actually offer it with two different powertrain options. I said earlier, a front-wheel drive single motor variant offering around 221 horsepower. That’s the model that’s going to get well over 300 mi of range. However, the sport trim along with the GT comes standard with a dual motor variant. Of course, giving us symmetrical all-wheel drive up to 338 horsepower, which is good for 0 to 60 in 5 seconds. So, again, this is the reason why, you know, Subaru is kind of charting a new course by introducing a sporty coupified uh SUV. All of them will essentially use a 74.7 kWh battery pack, which by the way, the chargeport door is located here on the passenger side fender. And as you can also see once Rob comes up and shows you guys, it has the NACS port here. So, which means it allows access to over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers across the uh US. Uh, and it also allows this vehicle to accept up to 150 kW because it does run on the 400volt architecture. Subaru says it’s good for around 10 to 80% in about 30 minutes. That’s an average time, but fast enough for most people. It has an 11 kW onboard charger. So again, Subaru has significantly upgraded the charging speeds, which is a big improvement versus the previous or the pre-refresh Sultterra. And this essentially has almost the same powertrain as the updated Sulttera. Now, Subaru wasn’t ready to talk about the curb weight or the towing figures yet or the top speed, but again, 0 to 60 and 5 seconds for the all-wheel drive model should be plenty fast. In fact, this thing will easily smoke uh a WRX that you might be parked next to, even like a WRX STI. Now, moving around to the side profile of the vehicle. As you can see, the look from the side certainly will remind you of a vehicle, and that’s because this car is identical, of course, to the Toyota CHR. They are essentially the same vehicle. And Subaru says this model is around 7 in shorter versus the Sultterra, which would make this vehicle around 177 uh.9 in long with a 104 in long wheelbase. The company didn’t talk about what the ground clearance yet was for this vehicle, but as you can see with this sport trim that we’re showing you here, it has the smaller wheels. So, Subaru offers either an 18 or a 20-in wheel on the GT version. You can see on the 18, it actually has like a plastic wheel cover over the alloy wheel. Uh, but the wheel itself is designed to be more aerodynamic. It’s riding on a 235×60 R18 uh to or looks like a Toyo Open Country allseason tire. Uh, these tires again are more focused for range and comfort. Again, if you are looking for a bigger wheel and tire package, the GT has a 20-in wheel. There’s also some unpainted cladding along the wheel arch trim and along the side sill. But I have to say it’s also very tasteful. It’s not overdone like we’ve seen like for example on the Sultterra when it first came out or even on the Trail Seeker. I like how Subaru was more restrained with the cladding on this vehicle. Now, as you can see, the Sport trim also comes with these black painted side mirrors. They have integrated turn signals and again that full 360 camera. And then there’s lots of additional black accents throughout the roof rails. I like how they’re a low profile in gloss black. This model is missing a panoramic glass roof, which I think you can add as an option, but it’s going to be standard, of course, on the GT. And then, just like the CHR, this vehicle also has its rear door handles kind of hidden in the uh D-pillar here, which kind of creates more of that koopified look. In fact, the roof line of this vehicle is kind of similar to the Sulttera, but it also has a little bit more of a slope. Again, that’s to create more of that koopified look. Let me know in the comments section below what you guys think of the overall design. Now, as you can see, looking at the rear end compared to the CHR, there are a couple of differences. The Toyota, if I remember correctly, has a fulllength LED light bar. Subaru, as you can see, decides to do away with that. Instead, you just have an integrated third brake light here. And you also have kind of like a continuation of their six-point LEDs from the front coming over to the rear of the vehicle. It certainly looks really interesting, very modern, uh, very robotic and futuristic. I love how the taillights have like a blacked out tint. The badging back here is also blacked out. There’s an integrated spoiler here along with kind of twin spoilers at the roof of the vehicle. And if you’re also noticing, there’s no rear window wiper on this vehicle. That’s because just like the Toyota CHR, the aerodynamics of this vehicle are designed to basically whoo the water away, which you know it it should do that in the rain, but when it’s like snowing outside and there might be like salt or whatever all over this window, this back window, that could become a problem. So, I kind of wish Subaru would have put a rear wiper on the vehicle. You can see the rest of the rear end, the rear bumper area is completely unpainted. Although, down here, you can see it’s got two different colors for the uh the black plastic area. You can see it’s got integrated parking sensors, your camera, of course, uh back there. And overall, it’s a pretty interesting looking design. It obviously belongs in the family, but at the same time, I like how Subaru has made some differences to the Uncharted to make it look a little different from the CHR. Now, in terms of the cargo area, you can see a power liftgate is included on this trim as well, which is nice. And Subaru says that uh when you open up the cargo area, you have around 25 cubic feet of storage space. Now, 25 is the only figure that they gave us. We don’t know what the figure space is going to be like when you fold down the back seats, but as you can see, the floor is pretty flat back here. There’s also some good underfloor storage. As you can see here, there’s actually two areas where you can hide some stuff underneath the floor, which is definitely a nice touch. Again, that slope in the rear is going to limit the cargo capacity a little bit. So, obviously, if you guys are looking for a Subaru EV with the most space, you’re going to be looking at the Trail Seeker, which is basically almost like an electric Outback. Now, moving on to the interior of the first ever Subaru Uncharted. That name still is not rolling off the tongue super easy for me. I have to say though, the interior of this vehicle basically takes all the tech and premium touches that we’ve seen from the Sultterra and the Trail Seeker and applies it even to this more middle sport trim. All of them will come with heated seats. And as you can see, you also have their uh updated Starex material. So, this is technically a synthetic leather, but it’s very durable. It’s designed to get wet and to resist dirt, uh, which is, you know, what Subaru owners are probably going to be taking their vehicles through or kind of like the more of the outdoor type terrain. But getting inside the vehicle, as you can see, it’s got a nice easy step SUV step in height. I’d probably estimate the ground clearance is probably just under 8 in. So, it’s got a really easy, you know, step in height to get inside. But, as I shut the door, the door also has a pretty solid sounding thump. We actually have the windows down because it’s a little bit dark in here. So, we want to try to show you guys as much as the cabin as possible in the light. But, looking at the rest of this cabin, you can see I love the two-tone look with this interior with the seats. Um, the seats themselves, as I mentioned earlier, they’re covered in that Starex material. You can actually get a heated and ventilated seat, which is not something you can get on the Toyota CHR. The GT trim is the one that’s going to come with the ventilated seats. The Sport trim comes with the heated seats, and it also adds a heated steering wheel, which is also a pretty nice touch. In terms of the materials, you can see the door panel on this upper portion is a soft touch injection molded plastic. You have more of that Starex here. The window controls, they are onetouch up down for all four, which is definitely a nice touch. The window controls and such, those are basically lifted out of your, you know, favorite Toyota product along with the door handles. We also have twoerson memory seats. I wasn’t expecting to find that on the sport trim. The driver seat adjusts in uh 10 different ways. The passenger seat adjusts in eight different ways. It even has a power adjustment there. So again, those are some pretty nice touches. And then in terms of the technology here, all of the uh all of the Uncharted will come with the 14-in display. So again, this is the latest version of basically like what you see in a lot of Toyota products. Of course, it’s going to be reskinned for Subaru uh in terms of the native software. I can’t actually interact with the screen. And you can see the screen is on, but Subaru’s asked me not to touch the screen because it’s still a pre early pre-production model. But what you should know is it will include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto. It also has, as you can see, the climate functions and the actual heated and cooled seats built into the screen, which is pretty similar to what Toyota does. In fact, this screen looks like it was pulled out of a Lexus with the dual zone temp uh with an actual display in the temp uh located at the bottom portion of the screen along with this 7-in helper display uh that sits basically almost in the location of a heads-up display. I also like the steering wheel. Subaru has done still that flat bottom and flat top design for the steering wheel. It offers a tilt telescoping adjustment. It offers a good amount of adjustability so you can get a comfortable driving position. You also have these paddles on the wheel. I believe that’s to control the regen braking. This only has a one-speed reduction gear transmission, which by the way, the transmission selector is here. It’s pretty similar to other Subaru models. You basically have to twist it to the left to go into reverse and then to the right to go into drive. Push the P button to go to park. And you can see if I push that button there, it brings up the 360 camera. Again, this is a very early prototype, so it’s not able to show me uh all the different um I guess graphics and whatnot that I want to show you guys. But as you can see here, also there’s dual wireless phone charging pads, uh which is a really, you know, great touch for those of you who need to charge uh your extra smartphone for, for example. You have your drive mode selector here. There’s basically an eco and a power and a normal mode along with your X mode with the grip control functionality. This is the trim that’s going to come standard with that because you have to add the dual motor functionality to get that. I love how Subaru resisted the urge to use piano piano black plastic. There’s a lot of flat gray plastic a little bit here around the shifter. And there’s also a deeper big storage area down there with a 12volt power outlet uh which is a nice touch. And then you can see the center console is somewhat padded. Uh and you can also open it up to the side uh right there. And then here’s the key fob for the vehicle. You can see clearly it’s a Toyota key fob with the Subaru logo. But it has your usual buttons here for lock, unlock. Uh you can also turn on the air conditioning, the climate control, and then activate the power lift gate along with using uh the panic function. This lid here, as you can see, is a dual function lid. So you can open it from the driver’s side as well. And then above me, you can see here there’s no panoramic sunroof on this model. I believe it’s optional, but it’s standard, of course, on the GT. Um you have an auto dimming rearview mirror here along with some LED map lighting. And then as well, I forgot to mention on the dash, there’s a soft touch mirror here from the door panels, but I love the orange trim here. It’s especially good on the with the habanero orange because it matches the exterior color and then there’s some ambient LED light stripping or strips there along with some ambient lighting in the actual door pull. So overall the interior while it definitely doesn’t feel super flashy, it’s very comfortable. It’s full of premium materials and I think with the standard tech that Subaru throws in, especially at the base end, it’s going to satisfy a lot of people, especially if you’re, you know, in the market for an EV tech and big screens are what people are essentially uh looking for. The one thing I also forgot to mention, there is no glove box for this vehicle. And that’s because Subaru offers a radiant knee warmer just like on the uh Toyota versions of this car. And the re the knee warmer basically removes the actual glove box there. But again, you have this area here and you have this area here to kind of serve as a replacement. But let’s go ahead and hop into the back seat area. As you can see, with those door handles kind of integrated into the D-pillar, it does, you know, make it a little bit of a high reach if you guys have kids. But as you can see the back seat area, Subaru didn’t have any final leg room figures yes just yet. But you will notate that the seats do recline have a slight recline and if you fold them down you can see it creates an almost flat floor. There’s a little bit of a hump here. So that could be a problem if you guys want to put like a bed back here. You want to use it to sleep inside the vehicle. Uh but it’s nice how Subaru at least gives you the ability to recline the seats a little bit. If I once I get back here, if I had to guess the leg room space, this is almost my driving position, I’d say uh around 36 in of legroom. Subaru actually says this has the same leg room as a Cross Trek back here, which doesn’t surprise me. The two vehicles are about the same size. As I get in back here, you can see the door panel materials. Uh, slightly padded material. It doesn’t feel quite as squishy as the front seats, but you can see nice and padded over here. I mentioned earlier, auto up down windows for back here as well. And they’re also illuminated. I like how Subaru again didn’t put a lot of piano black plastic. And then you can see back here, even this trim gets heated rear seats, USBC charging ports, and rear seat air vents. So, I wasn’t expecting to find heated rear seats in the sport trim along with two storage cubbies. And then you can see here uh with this armrest that folds down and gives you two cup holders. The one thing that surprised me is this is supposed to be a coupified SUV, but the headroom space is not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I have maybe a solid inch and a half, 2 in of headroom clearance at 5’7. So, even though this vehicle has that sleek, you know, sportback coupe look, the practicality in the back seat is actually going to surprise a lot of families out there. So clearly Subaru has had a pretty busy year introducing several new recently redesigned models or all new models in general. So after spending the day looking at the brand new Subaru Uncharted, I have to say the name of this vehicle might be may while it may be a little bit peculiar, it obviously is talking about how Subaru is going to chart a new course for the company, especially with this uh model here that is designed to be their first coupified sports SUV. The specs of the vehicle also seem pretty impressive. around 338 horsepower, 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, and around 290 mi of range for this model. And of course, this is the part where I wish I could talk about pricing for the vehicle, but Subaru says they weren’t right quite ready to talk about that. If I had to estimate, I’d probably say this model should come in line between basically a Sultterra and the Trail Seeker, which mean a starting price of around $45,000 going to around $50,000. That’s just my estimate. However, with that premium frontwheel drive model, it could bring the pricing down a little bit lower, which is something that’s unique because technically Toyota doesn’t offer a front-wheel drive version of the CHR, which I was actually surprised. I was expecting Toyota to offer the front-wheel drive version and Subaru to only come with all-wheel drive. But, if you’re looking to get your hands on the allnew Uncharted, you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer. Subaru says they’re going to show up at your local dealership sometime in early 2026. And again, we should have that pricing information as we get closer to the on sale date. But with all that said, hope you guys have enjoyed my full overview on the brand new 2026 Subaru Uncharted.
