BYD Sealion 5 2026 review: New plug-in hybrid SUV rivals Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV | Song Pro tested
Could the 2026 BYD Sealion 5 mid-size SUV be one of the next models sold in Australia by the booming Chinese car brand? While not yet confirmed for local showrooms, it would slot in between the Atto 3 small SUV and the slightly larger Sealion 6 mid-size SUV, which is also a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Yep, there’s not a lot of room in that line-up, but that doesn’t mean the Sealion 5 doesn’t have appeal.
Known as the Song Pro in its Chinese domestic market, the Sealion 5 has a softer look than its Sealion 6 sibling but still packs a PHEV powertrain that combines a 74kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 120kW electric motor. It comes with BYD’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade battery in two sizes: 12.9kWh for an electric driving range of 75km, or 18.3kWh for 115km.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Managing Editor Tim Nicholson travels to China to get behind the wheel of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV-rivalling Sealion 5 to work out if it should be sold Down Under.
