Ford Ranger PHEV 2025 review: New plug-in hybrid ute targets BYD Shark and GWM Cannon Alpha

The 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV has finally arrived in Australian showrooms, where it’s looking to shake up the ute segment with its plug-in hybrid powertrain, which the American car brand promises does not compromise its capability. As such, the all-new model finds itself going tyre to tyre with the already-popular BYD Shark 6 and the just-launched GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV.

So, what does the Ranger PHEV bring to the table? Well, it maintains the internal-combustion model’s 3500kg braked towing capacity and has a payload of up to 973kg, which is 200kg above the competition. Where the Ford falls behind, though, is its electric-only driving range of 49km (WLTP), which is at least half that of its rivals.

So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Journalist Chris Thompson gets behind the wheel of the Ranger PHEV at its national media launch to find out if it can really have its cake and eat it, too.
