XPeng G6 2025 review: New Chinese electric car brings premium feel over best-selling Tesla Model Y

Does the Tesla Model Y finally have a rival to really worry about? Until now the fully electric mid-size SUV segment has been dominated by the American model, but of all of the new Chinese rivals currently launching in Australia, the 2025 XPeng G6 is arguably the most convincing – at least on paper.

First and foremost, the G6 has a sharp starting price just below $55,000 (plus on-road costs), but it backs up with a genuinely premium-feeling list of standard features that is sure to shock (pun intended) tyre-kickers and buyers alike.

A rear-mounted electric motor is standard, producing either 190kW/440Nm (Standard Range) or 210kW/440Nm (Long Range), while the Standard Range’s 66kWh LFP battery pack delivers up to 435km of WLTP-rated driving range, with the Long Range’s 87.5kWh NMC unit offering 570km.

In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Andrew Chesterton and his family of three spend a week living with the new G6’s Long Range flagship to find out how well it stacks up in the real world.
