What happens when your car tech gets outdated?

I offer this for general knowledge, but it does have personal implications.

I have a 2014 Ford Escape and it falls in the category of unsupported.
Aside from SYNC, I’m satisfied with the vehicle, but if many of it’s computerized systems are unsupported what then?
I’m at an age where if I replace the Escape, and I’m not sure I must, what to get? It will surely be my last auto purchase.

My wife is struggling with access to anything low and I have two large dogs so I’d be thinking a wagon or another SUV. But I’m not a Subaru or VW fan and yes price is a factor. (Otherwise I’d be driving a Jaguar Shooting Brake)

    Any opinions?

I feel like the prevalence of CarPlay/Android auto in most newer cars mitigates a lot of these concerns. Sure it might be a little annoying to not be able to remote start your car with your phone, but if you’re shopping for a 10+ year old car that probably won’t be a dealbreaker anyway. And I don’t think people will mind if their onboard navigation no longer updates as long as they can just plug their phone in.

Your engine and transmission run on its own ecu and should be fine if you swapped out your stereo, so what features are you really missing? Remote start? Doors won’t lock? Or what? If you need a reason to buy a new car, I think you’ve already found one without this.

Nothin. As long as the Bluetooth or aux stays working it’s cool

  5. Nothing will happen. It just won’t get updates anymore but it will continue to function. It’s like asking what happens to computers still running windows 95: they still run.
