People do like what Mazda’s doing, and in certain metrics, their products excel, for example driving enjoyment. Many big SUVs like this are just boats, and if you like more dynamic driving, they tend to leave you wanting. Most people that prioritize driving enjoyment favor Mazda.
However,
Mazda does shows its immaturity in this market segment and tends to fall short in some areas. For example, a BMW SUV is still a much more premium experience. And Honda’s SUV is much more practical in internal utilization. Mazda hasn’t quite figured out some metrics yet, often lacking the refinement of the established luxury brands nor the practicality of the mainstream brands. They’re in-between but trying. They’re getting good results but aren’t getting top marks. The CX-90 is a step up from the CX-9, and the next generation will be another step upward. But they have to really work hard at understanding why they fall short in key areas, or they will feel slightly out of place, slightly a compromise versus competitors.
As a counter to this, Genesis is a branding that’s been aiming for the same target Mazda is, and they, again over some generation cycles, have seemingly hit better marks that resonate well with consumers in a way the Mazda products don’t. The project leads are aiming for slightly different metrics for the same demographic, and Mazda hasn’t quite dialed in the targets yet.
