Total Transformation For This Beat Up Cheap Electric Car!
Today starts a project that I have been very much looking forward to on this 2016 Volkswagen eolf now this car is owned by my friend Kyle Connor who runs out of spec Studios and you’ve seen this car even on the out of speec reviews Channel Kyle purchased this vehicle for
$3,000 while this thing is very rough around the edges it’s here today to get a full transformation instead of going in paint correcting the paint getting it completely swirl-free Kyle and I decided let’s do a full color change vinyl wrap so welcome back to another out of speec detailing video here from Clear
Detailing in Northern Colorado let’s jump into It now the story behind this 2016 Volkswagen eolf is definitely quite funny we believe this to be one of the cheapest working used Eagles in the entire country Kyle of course was on Facebook Marketplace one day searching for cheap used electric vehicles as he does in this everwing series of him
Collecting vehicles and showing that electric cars can be affordable but you may have to deal with a car that is a little rough around the edges Kyle found this car at a local used car dealership again off Facebook Marketplace for $3,000 or $3500 nears makes no
Difference here but as you can tell from the duct taped temporary license plate that is the kind of dealership we were working with they would tell him if nothing worked or if stuff was broken but he decided you know what I think this would be a fun vehicle to have and
Man oh man has he had so much fun with it the funny thing about Kyle and this particular eolf is he has access to a ton of different vehicles from press cars to his own personal Fleet of vehicles like his rivan r1t Model S plaid Tesla Model 3 Performance pstar 1
And Audi rron but every time I’ve seen Kyle over the last couple of months he’s driving his eolf he truly loves this thing now it may be looking a little bit different if you were watching the original video where he purchased it with some new wheels on here these are
Rotaform ccvs these were actually my wheels off a previous Mark 7 golf all track that I owned and I said Kyle we need to make this thing look cool and that kind of started this ball rolling of really revamping the eolf here it’s also been through a suspension change as
You can see it is slammed on the ground now we’re still going to tweak that a little bit raise it up so it’s a little bit more usable and drivable but the wrap idea really came and saying this car is very rough it’s got hail damage
On it it’s got a few fender benders the paint is in pretty atrocious condition so why don’t we just change the color make it look more presentable on camera and something that’s going to going to be fun that he can take out go to Starbucks go to dinner or even just
Drive over here to the shop with now I want to caveat this video and saying I am by no means a professional vinyl wrap installer I am a detailer I specialize in paint Corrections ceramic Coatings and very very fine details on cars spending 40 to 50 hours doing that I
Have wrapped a few of my personal vehicles some trim pieces here and there so just cave out that and saying I will make mistakes on this vehicle but instead of sending this to a professional vinyl wrap shop that’s going to charge a ton of money for a car
That only cost $3,000 let’s buy a roll of film and let’s wrap this thing so before I ramble on too much longer I quickly want to walk around the vehicle with you show you some areas of I would say concern and things we’re going to have to work with on this particularly
Rough Volkswagen eolf we’re then going to get into the prep stage where I need to of course decontaminate this car get it 100 100% clean so we can have a clean vinyl wrap installation there are a few pieces that I’m going to pull off of this car such as window trim like this
Door handles tail lights a few things like that so we’ll get into all of that as this video builds but I’m super pumped for this one let’s get working before we get into washing and prepping the vehicle for wrap and actually installing the wrap I just wanted to
Give you guys a general walk through talk through some areas of concern for me and just generally talk about the current condition of the eolf starting here on the hood you can see the paint is quite rough so we’ll be cleaning all of this up of course doing a full clay
Bar treatment on it to make sure we have no dirt and Grime on here for a clean wrap install now you may be able to make out here that there are quite a few hail dents here on the hood and on the roof now of course ideally the way to do this
To really make this car look absolutely perfect would be to go in fix all these dents with PDR maybe even get new panels I’ll show you some others around here but in all reality on a $3,000 car spending thousands of dollars and getting PDR done probably not ideal especially for this particular car
Kyle’s Vehicles all live outside as you may or may not know we get quite a bit of hail in the summertime here in Colorado so this one is definitely something spend a ton of money doing that and then you could get hail damage of course so something we need to
Consider there here on the front bumper you’ll just notice got quite a few scrapes in here it’s harder to see down here this lower uh front bumper here has quite a few deep scratches we may want to kind of sand those down a little bit
To make them look a little bit better so they don’t show through the wrap I’ll kind of do some test areas to see how that goes You may be noticing the tow hook eye here basically the plastic cover it’s actually in the car so we’re not missing that but this will help wrap
Around in that area make for a much cleaner install front plate Kyle asked me to remove here so we’ll remove those and see how it looks behind there that’ll be part of our disassembly and then hopefully make some bumper plugs for this so we can kind of cover up
Those nasty four bolt holes in there down the side of the vehicle here every panel has just quite a few dents in it some wear and tear I’m seeing some here right above the eolf in that particular area it is what it is this is really
What you expect with a $3,000 car this area down here this Lower Side skirt that runs the whole length of the car is a little concerning we’ll see how this works once we get it cleaned up but wrapping over this of course we don’t want to start pulling dents out of here
But I seem to think here what happened is they either jacked it up the previous owner or maybe even the dealership at one point jacked this up car maybe fell off the Jack and dented this area it also pushed out this front fender here as you can see a large gap there now
Down the side of the car of course we have quite a few door dings the nice thing with the wrap this is going to cover up all of those paint imperfections again on these areas I may put a little wrap over it see what it
Looks like if I need to sand those down to make it a little bit smoother to not show through the wrap I think we’ll do that my main concern with the eolf here is this driver side rear quarter panel and we have quite a massive Dent here
Now again in all reality the nicest way to do this of course would be to fix the hail dents and fix an area like this in all reality to fix this panel it’s going to be quite expensive they’re going to have to go in here massage this dent out
Likely do quite a bit of Bondo and then repaint it this panel runs the entire length up here all the way down to the a pillar and it also connects all the way down here so that would be a very very cost prohibitive fix on here that Kyle
Realistically doesn’t want to spend on the eolf I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do to fix this up a little bit um we’ll kind of have to play with that as we go on in the detail now back here boom we’ve got quite a few dents back
Here again one of those things would love to pop those out but it’s also going to give this car a little bit of a St if you will one thing I definitely want to focus on before we wrap it of course is getting this duct tape off fingers crossed it doesn’t pull paint
There it’s been on there for quite a few months now so all in all I think we have a decent canvas of course like the passenger side here is quite a bit nicer than the driver’s side but I realistically think the wrap is going to hide a lot of really nasty areas like
Deep scratches like this and it’s also going to make the car a lot more fun a lot more unique especially sitting on Wheels like this being lowered now areas that I’m going to remove door handles I’m going to have to remove I’m going to remove this strip here underneath the
Windshield to get a cleaner install I’m also going to be taking off the mirrors that’ll help me get film up under there and make it look a lot nicer now a lot of folks and I see this in the wrapping industry a lot some shops take everything off taking every bumper out
Every headlight out realistically that is the best way to do it a lot of people don’t like when that happens because stuff can and will break inevitably especially on a car like this that has had a rough life but in all reality I think on here if we safely remove areas
Like bumper we’re going to get a lot better coverage and our edges are going to look a lot better I always say this about vinyl wrapping and ppf the easiest parts of the vehicles are areas like the center of the hood or center of a panel
What makes a good install versus a bad one is all of your edges Edge prepping getting edges wrapped around nice enough to where it’s not going to peel and lift Colorado is a very extreme climate here where we’ll get like -2 or – 255° in the
Winter time and it’ll be 100° in the summer again as I said this car is going to live outside so I think disassembling a little bit here and there taking out headlights removing the front bumper tucking wrap and vinyl underneath there is really going to help us in the long
Run to keep this vinyl wrap looking good but before we go on too much longer let’s finally get cleaning the eolf [Applause] oh Oh W [Applause] Well holy smokes that was quite a bit of work to say the least especially doing this by yourself so of course we remove the front bumper here it is actually back here and this thing is mangled so many Clips are broken underneath bolts missing things like that so it was a
Little bit easier but I did what I could the bottom of this is just destroyed now the whole reason for going through all of this is access to edges so areas like this that you can see where the headlight sits in we can actually wrap quite a bit more into that and get
Better adhesion the biggest thing really we want to clean all these areas out so you imagine here where the bumper lines up we can actually wrap that under get all of this super clean under here and it’s just going to make for that much better of an install I realistically
Spent 2 hours or so on this not too terribly bad so down here on the front fenders I am going to remove these if the camera can focus so I can wrap under here this is an area where wraps peel a lot because you have a lot of dirt and
Grime and things like that so I think that’ll help taking that off now down the doors here we did quite a bit of work so of course removing door hand this really helps to get a very nice install one thing I want you to point out here is look how filthy it is
Underneath where the door handles sit so if you’re trying to tuck film underneath the handle there it’s not going to stick that well this is how edges fail the same thing goes for up here so this area right here just has a rubber strip if I were to leave those on wrap underneath
Here this Edge is going to pop immediately so we’re going to get all this cleaned up it’s going to help substantially now one thing I was really thinking I was going to do was remove the mirrors now there’s kind of an issue here if I pop open the door can still
Open the doors here the only issue with the mirrors is you have to take the door panel off and this wiring harness that comes down for the powered mirrors is somewhere in here while I got access to all of that what I found was okay I’m
Going to be able to run those back super easy so I thought okay let’s not pull the mirrors instead we can remove these two bolts here and lift it up a little bit to give us just a little bit more room and what I mean by that is we can
Tuck the film up underneath here it’s going to look a whole heck of a lot better now back here we also did a little bit of work so of course we remove the tail lights it’s insane I spent so long cleaning this entire car you start pulling pieces off and and all
These are absolutely filthy but as you can imagine if we’re wrapping up over this the wrap’s going to stay a heck of a lot better of course we still have tons and tons of cleaning to do here but I’m very happy with how we’re going so
Far so on this side I did decide to remove the gas cap door here which is of course the charging flap door and that’s super easy this is going to help me get in here a little bit better as well as wrap the actual door on there so I’m
Pretty happy with results here so far just a couple hours of work and I think this is going to make our job and life a heck of a lot easier and it’s going to last a heck of a lot longer taking time to do that so next steps now I’m going
To go through clean every single edge with Ice propyl alcohol and really get in there make sure there’s no Grime remaining so that when when we actually put the film on we’re not getting specks of dirt falling into the film creating a nasty film so let’s keep going here pumped with our Progress Oh N Oh A And here we are we are finally done wrapping and ceramic coating the Volkswagen eolf here what an insane project this has been now of course I kept you guys in the dark for a while with the color change we did this all in black and white I thought it would be
Really fun to have the full car done in the really bold color it is and reveal it once the car is done instead of showing it to you as it progressed so with no further Ado in 3 two 1 what do you guys think this thing is
Bold to say the least so this is kpmf Verde Solaris this is simp similar not exactly the same as something like the mar 8 Golf GTI that’s what Kyle was really going for here with his inspiration I know this color is going to be controversial Alyssa and I have
Nicknamed this booger green and Mano man is it wild it has a ton of metallic in it under the scan grip lights and hopefully outside it’s been gloomy and nasty I can really see this thing once it’s fully done but this has been a project for the last five or six days
I’ve been sick I’ve been working here hammering this thing out as not a professional vinyl wrap installer but I got to say I’m pretty proud of myself on this one so before I ramble too much longer let’s walk you around the car and show you what I’ve been up to for the
Past five or 6 Days So let’s take a little walk around here and I can already tell you this little $3,000 car looks a whole heck of a lot better now now this thing looks insane such a bold Choice by Kyle here with the rotaform wheels and this bright bright color and I’m telling you as I’m seeing
This it looks nothing on camera like it does in person the color is so vibrant you can see a lot of Shadows over here it’s really really bright in person I truly cannot wait to see this outside the funny thing with this project is I’ve been posting little teasers up on
Twitter and I’ve been doing those also in black and white and people are going what a weird color Choice he went from black to Silver some people thought it was dardo gray and I’m like just please wait until the end because this thing is going to blow your mind so kpmf ver
Solaris here as I said now a few things that we didn’t do right off the bat so we did not actually do the roof and I think this was a very cool choice to leave the roof gloss black give it a little bit of contrast and then I
Actually did a really nice cut line here on the spoiler so I of course used knifeless tape on there not trying to cut directly on the paint worked out so freaking nice now one of the areas that I talked to Kyle about was the door handles I really would have liked to see
The door handles here in the same green verde Sol Solaris color here but realistic basically with my wrapping skills I didn’t feel like these door handles would stay and what I mean by that is basically this is 360° around here painted and we would
Have have to had a cut line here I feel like it would have failed over time so I said what do you think about doing gloss black handles we accent that with the gloss black roof and then also accent that with the gloss black mirrors and personally I think it looks pretty darn
Sharp now like I said with this project guys I am not a professional vinyl wrap installer I’ve been trained by XEL now gosh five six years ago so I do understand film ppf is very different from Vinyl wrapping here and man oh man was this thing a challenge especially
The bumpers as you guys know of course I am a onehanded automotive detailer my detailing skills I put up there with the best of the best my vinyl wrapping skills are getting better like I said I’ve done a few of my personal vehicles in the past but this was really a full
Project that I took on my absolute own so all the bumpers here having to do those heat them stretch them do everything get them laid down looking nice with one hand was tremendously hard and challenging but I got to say I am super thrilled with how those turned out
Now a few things I want to talk about that were challenging on this of course as I mentioned the bumper this piece was a pain in the butt so basically what I did is I believe I cut a 120 in maybe 116 somewhere in there piece that was
Basically 5 ft tall and this is one continuous piece down here it also goes all the way up here so you can imagine how much vinyl you’re working with here I also of course cut out the doors within that that as you saw in the time
Lapse and use those so we actually are left with quite a bit of vinyl left over especially not doing the roof that would have taken quite a bit now improvements that I think I can work on in this particular industry of vinyl wrapping it’s all about the edges edges are
Extremely complicated but I think I did a pretty darn good job so let me show you here of course the interior is filthy um but all these areas I got this nicely tucked in up here you can see down here on the door edges I think I
Did a pretty darn nice job it’s 100% not perfect and I’ll be the first one to say that but I’m definitely working on my skills quite a bit to make them stick and be a lot better so areas like this really challenging to wrap around this
Edge you can see I kind of miss this little Point here so I’m still learning and this is a full learning experience Kyle was like like you know what this is a $3,000 rig I don’t think we need to go crazy and you know go spend four5 $6,000
On a vinyl wrap to have it professionally done because the car was really really beat up as you guys can tell but it looks a heck of a lot better of course we still have dents like this honestly it kind of adds to the character of this vehicle with the Crazy
Rform Wheels the bright color and the story behind this car I think it’s truly awesome now now this area was one that I was very concerned about and as you can see no it doesn’t look perfect but I’m pretty darn happy with how much that hid
That area if you remember here we had bare metal with lots of rust on it we had paint chipping off this area had already been bonded now my original idea was to go in there sand everything down Bondo it over but once I found that there was Bondo in there and then
Realizing that wrap doesn’t stick to Bondo then we’d have to paint it I was just like I think this is kind of the best situation for here and I got to say it doesn’t look terrible of course yes there’s still a dent but there’s dents all over this car I’m just seeing one
Here there’s hail dents all over the doors here were quite harsh but man oh man I’m super thrilled with this so the best thing that I did with this was take the car apart you guys saw me actually wrap the entire front bumper or maybe may you didn’t I don’t remember some of
I did not film everything on here the time lapses would have been so so long I don’t think I am going to show finyl wrapping the front end but I actually wrapped it off the car on a stand which was its own challenge itself with the headlights out I pulled areas like the
Um DRL lights down here out and it really helped me get the vinyl up and over and under everything so you can see there look at how nice these edges look now again I do expect if few these edges to pop a lot of these really pointy
Edges like this are an absolute pain in the butt to do and I still need to work on that skill quite a bit if I’m going to do professional vinyl wrapping in the future as for right now I’m not thinking I am other than maybe cybertruck we’ll
Talk more about that in upcoming videos but I realistically think with G from testpros um DIY vinyl kit it’s already pre-cut that’s something I can easily knock out maybe not easily but can knock out in quite a nice fashion and a more professional sense this is a completely
Different story when you’re dealing with a car that’s super beat up every single edge was completely filthy I went in cleaned and cleaned and cleaned every single edge on here but man oh man it sure looks good edges like this area were really really challenging to get
The film tucked in there all all of this black trim was just falling apart so I had to just spend like 20 30 minutes just cleaning this area out constantly with alcohol trying to get all of the crud falling out of there but man oh man
I got to say I’m pumped with this I’m very very proud of myself for doing this completely on my own areas down here like the door handles I pulled those off completely seamless in here think it looks fantastic even area here like the charge port we got the film tucked in
All the way down here you can see nice Cuts here on the edges really really pleased with how this bad boy turned out so no I will not be taking any appointments for vinyl wrap installs I’m a professional detailer I’m going to stick to my paint Corrections and
Ceramic Coatings but if you have a cyber truck in Colorado here or maybe if you’re out of state and want to bring it here to do some detailing maybe do a color change vinyl wrap with test Ros vinyl wrap kit we can talk so give me a call definitely at Clear detailing but
I’m curious to know what you guys think of the color on this of course everybody’s going to have their own comments down in the comment section below do you love it or hate it I personally love it this car looks so darn unique and man oh man this $3,000
Car does not look like $3,000 anymore thank you guys so much for watching and thanks for putting up with an amateur vinyl wrap installer but I got to say I’m pretty pumped with how this bad boy turned out can’t wait to show Kyle he hasn’t even seen this thing so we’ll see
You in another at aspect detailing video very very soon Bye-bye
