Chevy Truck Talks: Super Cruise | Chevrolet
Super Cruise is the industry’s first true hands-free driver assistance technology that enables drivers to travel hands-free on more than 400,000 miles of compatible roads. More than 138 million miles have been driven by customers using Super Cruise. When Super Cruise is engaged, the vehicle’s LiDAR map data, real-time cameras,
Radars and GPS keep the vehicle moving forward and centered in the lane while elevating the driver’s comfort and convenience. Over 80% of surveyed owners said that Super Cruise makes driving more relaxing. That is why GM will make Super Cruise available on more vehicles and more roads, bringing it to more customers.
When Super Cruise is engaged, the vehicle’s precision LiDAR map data, real-time cameras, radars and GPS keep the vehicle traveling along the lane path for a hands-free driving experience. These systems work together through “sensor fusion” to create a sensory field around the vehicle that assists in keeping it centered in the lane
While elevating the driver’s comfort and convenience. It truly is a feature that, once you try it, you can’t live without! Drivers can trailer hands-free with Super Cruise, on compatible vehicles. While trailering with Super Cruise, the system will calibrate to the gross combined weight rating of the truck and trailer.
Which means that Super Cruise with trailering can increase the following distance behind vehicles, and allow more time and room for braking. It also uses vehicle dynamic inputs to determine if the trailer is swaying, then hands back control to the driver if the swaying is over a certain threshold.
We developed our advanced driver assistance features with a focus on diligence and safe operation – what we call our safe deployment philosophy. A key part of that is our industry-first driver attention system. This system uses a small camera located on top of the steering column and works with infrared
LEDs to monitor the driver’s head position and eye-gaze in relation to the road to help ensure driver attention. This is what allows us to be truly hands-free as we safely deploy this technology, ensuring customers can enjoy all its benefits. Super Cruise has two options for automated lane changes. The automatic lane changing feature
Can determine on its own when a lane change is needed – like passing slower vehicles – and initiate the maneuver automatically, while following signaling protocols. With Lane Change on Demand, the driver can either tap or fully latch the turn signal to indicate that they would like to change lanes.
This prompts the system to look for an acceptable opening, while taking time to let other vehicles know that a lane change is about to happen. If the system determines that the indicated lane is open, the vehicle will change lanes. The driver attention system will help keep the driver’s focus on the surroundings
During the lane change. Our industry-first driver attention system tracks the driver’s head position and eye gaze and alerts them to pay close attention to the road and take control when needed. The driver attention system has a robust series of escalations, both visual and audible, to alert the driver to take control when needed.
If the driver does not respond to the series of alerts, the system will bring the vehicle to a safe, controlled stop, the hazard lights will turn on and an OnStar Emergency-Certified advisor will be called.
