EV News | Ford Abandons EVs; New Challenger To Tesla Emerges

Hi I’m Dave welcome to Dave takes it on for this the last news edition of 2023 it’s the 29th of December well we lead with Ford having already announced that they want to ditch EVS Ford has decided that their way forward is to go back to ice as we

Know but to go for premium ice topof the range models they’ve decided they don’t care how many sales they get they need a minimum profit per sale so all of the basic models are now ditched all of the EVS are pretty much closed down and all

They’re going to be making is the most expensive premium cars that they’ve made in the past and surely if you look at Ford’s history that’s exactly the opposite to what Henry Ford started over a 100 years ago he decided that the way forward was to get into the mass Market with affordable

Vehicles well seems the current CEO Jim Farley totally disagrees with that and he just wants profit at any cost even if that’s sales well let’s see how that works out for him well in the meantime General Motors produce almost no EVS they’ve pretty much shut down but they’re still

Announcing that by 2025 they’ll be all EVS nothing else in the meantime the latest venture the Chevy Blazer has just been withdrawn from sale it’s only been on sale a few weeks what’s going on well the press and the media when they got hold of it for

Test driving it suddenly found a list of faults absolutely enormous list one of them found 23 in the first couple of days of having the car and that even included things like shutting down the entire car how can GM release an EV knowing it to be so bad this can’t come as a

Surprise to them well time will tell but GM do not seem to be on track to be going all EV by 2035 and certainly don’t seem to be beating Tesla by 2025 which is one of the targets they had set in the meantime there’s massive hypocrisy in the government and the motor Industries

China well France has just announced it won’t give any grants or subsidies or tax breaks to anything produced in China yet stantis which has factories in France like persio um and Rena they’ve just done a deal a partnership with China to manufacture for them a multi-billion pound investment for them

To make cars for stallant and they’re not the only one not in France but in Germany Volkswagen has just formed a partnership with a Chinese company as well and Mercedes they’ve been using Chinese companies to manufacture their cars for almost 10 years so this is a little bit

Strange what is the policy with China somebody accused me of being totally biased in favor of China despite their massive human rights crimes but this seems to say that it’s all right to do business with China as long as there’s a profit in it but it’s

Not all right to be seen to be supporting China because of the human rights issues I wish the government would get a grip on this and find out whether China’s in or out and over in America Biden is no better he also is allowing some of the companies over

There to manufacture in China big example General Motors they have a partnership with a Chinese company well seems as a bit of a oh a crisis here because Biden supports the unions which is very heavy in General Motors but he doesn’t support China but General Motors does well we’ll see that

Where this one goes but trying to impose tariffs and sanctions against Chinese companies these days is pretty much impossible when most of the companies in the world head straight over there to get the cheap manufacturing Strange World well the also this year uh UK EV monitoring to be able to qualify for the

Various grants available for Ev charges that really comes into force on on January the 1st EV charging installations will need to hit a minimum RI reliability level which is in excess of 99% now Tesla already reached this there’s his 99.96% huge figure uh the others well they’ve

Got some way to go I keep reporting when we out we’re out on our travels the grid serve sometimes six out of 12 are out of order after just a month of opening well the situation has really got to improve I see some of the EV charging networks

Are doing that simply by buying Tesla Chargers the v4s so many people are queuing up for this one now it would seem if you’re not going to service them you may as well B buy the best on the market and the most reliable we’ll see how that one goes because even Teslas do

Break down occasionally I did see briefly today one of the charges uh was out of operation it says so on the app uh they’re quite open about it they’ll simply put up the details but next time I checked it had already gone so seems like uh when it goes down which they

Always will do one day they get fixed pretty quickly now we’re entering a really interesting period with EV sales and a lot of people saying oh sales are dead and private buyers have gone and all that well we’ve covered that in past ones people have stopped buying cars these days and there’s a

Massive boom in Leasing and leasing of course is where the leasing company buys the vehicle off the manufacturer Ford Tesla whoever it is and so that no longer shows as a private sale it shows as a fleet sale so as fast as the private buyers are disappearing the Fleet Sales are

Increasing but we’re running into a problem and that is we don’t have enough EVs and this is something that Tony zba says is the valley of death what this is is a point where the old technology in this case ice cars petrol and Diesel people have just stopped buying

Them because they see they are not the future and at some point in the future whether it’s 2025 or 2035 when governments eventually ban these these cars are not going to be popular so people have effectively stopped buying ice cars but they can’t yet get enough and certainly

Not enough affordable EVS so we’re entering a lull in the system now EV sales are increasing rapidly and really trying to get into this uh valley of death and get rid of it by making mass production however they’re not there yet most of the offerings are out of the

Affordability of most of the buyers so it’s a valley of death uh things are just dropping slight L but as EV production increases and I know we can’t rely on Ford or General Motors but we can rely on the likes of Tesla byd saic uh all the big ones over in China

They are massively ramping up production so this value of death will start decreasing and EVS will start taking over in the meantime ice cars are entering a terminal decline and that decline is going to get steeper and steeper particularly if Ford insist on just putting up the prices to maintain

Their profit margins we can all see where that one’s going but seems Ford is just more interested in profit today new today uh massive Investments coming in from Green funds around the world now most people rely on uh subsidies or investment for install calling charges Tesla’s an exception

They just fund their own they’re a profit rich company and they have the money and they decided a long time ago that uh a decent EV charger network of high-speed reliable and cheap Chargers was essential for the adoption of EVs and how right they’ve proved but today there’s a massive

Change and that is an awful lot of investment into EVS is coming from the traditional investment funds we’re looking at uh Pension funds Church of England Investments Blackstone these are all massive funds Blackstone is American uh uh Blackstone is an American Investment Bank or investment fund that manages over $1

Trillion and all of these are starting to pour money into EV charging infrastructure so for those of you out there say there aren’t enough totally agree with with you in one way there aren’t enough but they’re on the way grid serve last year got a half billion

Investment from a green Fund in the UK it’s the largest investment of its type ever over in America Blackstone massively invested into apple green electric who are on a spending spree as well and installing like it’s going out of fashion now for any EV doubters out there thinking it’s past its peak it’s

Going to fail these are massive investment funds and they do not invest into any industry if they know there’s no future in it or no return for their investors so they have faith in the EV charging infrastructure and I think most of you should as well in the UK I

Mentioned that uh leasing is taking over from uh purchasing but an even bigger boom is occurring and that’s salary sacrifice device there are huge government incentives for tax purposes uh for something called benefit of kind if you invest in an EV what it means is that you give a part

Of your salary to pay for the lease but in return the government will treat your car almost as if it’s free so you have a massive tax saving and the sort of figures we’re talking about is about 40% cheaper to lease uh on salary sacrifice

Than it is to buy a car for yourself so there’s a huge boom going on with salary sacrifice and this is only going to grow in the future it costs the companies nothing at all but they get the credit for going green they’re seen as a green

Company and they get green credits so there’s a massive boost for the company to do it the employee simply pays the lease but it’s a much smaller payment than had he done it out of his salary once he’s been paid so stand by this is

Going to be a big industry and there are figures about like a brand new Tesla Model 3 for 300 a month that’s just crazy to because to finance it you’re looking at5 or 600 a month probably more depends on how you how long you borrow it over the other massive Boom at the

Moment is in workplace charges it is huge just local to me up the road about 20 mile is the media City on the outskirts of Manchester in sford and that’s where the BBC is based now no longer in London at BBC house they Now operate out of uh Media city and Media

City has a massive number of EV charges for their staff so although the BBC Media might be a little bit biased against EVS they have invested heavily into EV charging for their employees now when I say invested heavily it’s not quite true because an awful lot of the charging uh

Manufacturers the charging manufacturers are offering free deals people like podp point and uh charge point if you go to them as a business and say you’d like to have charges in your car park they offer you a totally free deal we’ll fit them we’ll run them will’ll maintain them

We’ll do everything you just use them most employers though prefer some sort of tie-up there’s a deal and that deal is the Pod Point charge point or whoever will install them free of charge but they then have a percentage share on the revenue that they generate because

They don’t offer them for free you can’t charge your your EV for free in most workplace charges but there is a very much lower charge so all that happens is the BBC in this case they get someone to come in they install all the charges they maintain them and they split the

Proceeds now why is this important well you got to have a look at what we call reverse psychology people out there honestly believe if they can’t charge at home they can’t have an EV and that’s because they picture that if you have an EV you

Come home from work you plug your car in and at a set time or overnight it charges at a cheap rate so every morning you wake up with your car fully charged and that’s the only way you can use these well two things wrong with that

The first thing is that most modern EVS have a range of over 200 miles and most people only cover between 100 and 150 miles in a week so they only need charging once a week that’s one fcy but the other big one is when you investigate workplace ch charges because

You just reverse it instead of charging at home you set off from home drive to work and you plug it in all day at a subsidized workplace charger your car will charge all day long if it needs it and in the evening when you go out to your car it will be

Fully charged you drive home you don’t need to plug it in because you’re only traveling 10 or 15 miles and it wake up in the morning it’ll still be almost fully charged you drive off to work again now one downside of this is that many people still have the me mentality

That you have to plug it in every day so we’re starting to get reports of workplace Chargers that are just fully occupied with cars that are fully charged can I just give a serious message you do not need to plug your car in every single day nobody does aart

From a rep on the road who is doing more miles than the range of the car and everybody else only needs to charge once maybe twice a week so at work all they need to do is work out some sort of rotor so that a a particular division

Will charge their cars for on Mondays and Thursdays another division Tuesdays and Fridays and another one on on on Wednesdays just work out a rotor but the idea of leaving your car in in a workplace charger plugged in all day every day you need to get rid of that

Straight away because that’s destroying the whole point of workplace charges just on that subject of people charging every day and charging to 100% if you look at the uh public EV charges out there whether it’s Grid surve or ionity or Osprey or Tesla doesn’t really matter you can go to any

Charger and there will be peak times during the day when these are absolutely full and even have cues and yet an hour or so later they’re empty and there’s one or two cars in there my message to people who use public charges is just have a think

About when you’re going to charge your car not where but when now I personally never go to a supermarket at 5:00 on a Friday because it’s heaving the car parks are full all the trolleys are gone massive cues at the at the checkouts well I’ll never know but I it’s a fact

So if I go Supermarket shopping I never go at 5:00 on a Friday I’ll go at 4:00 on a Thursday or 6:00 on a Tuesday it doesn’t matter when but if you don’t need to be there when it’s busy don’t go there when it’s busy think about it

There are more than enough Chargers in the UK at the moment to satisfy all the charging needs you go to any charger at 11:00 at night absolutely deserted right the way through to about 6:00 the next morning they’re just sitting there doing nothing so what we need to do is start

Thinking when am I going to charge not where and if we can spread out the charging of our EVS on the roads we can have two three four five times as many cars on the road and still experience no cues there are some people who will have

To charge at peak times but they’re the Reps on the road the people on a road trip have to get somewhere maybe a hotel by a certain time let them have the charges at Peak time let’s us just plan let’s just go at a different time and

Enjoy our chargy instead of fuming over cues now in the EV charging world the Giants are beginning to emerge now Tesla’s always been there they have been the largest certainly not the largest in number of chargers out there uh but in the large largest number of Ultra rapid

Charges out there cuz Tesla never made anything less than 125 KW so in terms of the public Giants who is out there well grid serve they got their half billion last year and they are going out and installing massive installation the smallest I’ve seen is six Chargers and that was East eastbound

Eastbound at uh Birch services on the m62 but on the westbound side they have 12 they’re installing massive installation right throughout the country everywhere I go I’ve probably seen eight or 10 grid serve installations in this last month they are huge they’re making full use of

That money that money by the way came from a green fund British green fund which invested half a billion into grid serve another one benefiting from the investment apple green I spent months and months looking for these and found they were only down in the Southeast

Which I don’t get down to very often but in the last last few months it’s absolutely taken off just down the road from me is an apple green eight Chargers dual Bay charges so that’s 16 bays at chonic Richard Services Northbound now previously there were two grid serve 50 Kow shared Bay well

They’re just a joke but apple green now also I’m seeing them all over the place uh there were five five charges 180 kws gone in and S Services on the M4 in South Wales they are installing everywhere and they are massive and when I I’ve done my uh investigation into

Apple green what I find is that their financing comes from a partnership with Blackstone Investment Bank or investment fund which has a trillion dollars of Investments so apple green like grid Ser have just got a massive cash boost and they’re installing like again they’re going out of

Fashion BP pulse yeah BP the bad guys they seem to have uh realized the message and the message is that the uh sales and the profits from Petrol and Diesel are declining rapidly and the EVS really are taking over and they’re seeing everyone else investing into EVS not only governments

But the private investment funds so BP pulse has now opened three massive big hubs all in the London area well two in London one in uh ketering and they’ve planned to have 300 new hubs by 2030 apple green by the way uh wanting to install 3,000 new charges by

2030 now Tesla’s still out in front at the moment but there’s some serious money going into developing the infrastructure for decent EV charging in the UK so all you private motorists out there standby it’s going to get better by the way if you’re enjoying this video

Please hit the like button and if you want to see more please subscribe well getting back on to charging and mentioning BP again taxis and private hire and ride share companies are the target apparently in London they produce 4% of all the city pollution but they only represent less

Than 1% of all the vehicles so taxis private high and right Shares are producing five times the pollution of ordinary cars ordinary people with their cars so it’s a logical Target it’s also a very big Target there are already just under 300,000 taxis private tire and rid share operating in the

UK now by 2025 BP in the annual report this year has found or discovered or investigated that EV charging hubs will provide 80% of all the private charging in London for the taxis it’s a massive Market it’s mainly because of the mileage they do whereas private drivers are now dropping

Their mileage it’s heading down towards 100 miles or 5,000 a year taxi drivers Uber and everything else they’re expanding rapidly on top of that there are some very handy grants 3 45,000 that go to anyone who wants an EV who’s in the ride share or private high or taxi

Industry they also thanks to BP pulse get dedicated charges BP pulse have formed a partnership with Uber and some of those Chargers they’ve installed are specifically for Uber nobody else there’s an awful lot of infrastructure going in now I’ve got to mention new batteries because there are so many of them

Breaking news this is the latest one this is going to kill off Tesla uh etc etc yeah there’s so many reports of batteries that are just about to hit the market that well I tell you what I’m going to wait until they do there is one company that’s Neo and they have already

Launched one car with these batteries in it and they are amazing they are far more powerful than Tesla uh but it’s only one car it’s relativly small numbers because it’s at the luxury end of the market they have yet to go into mass production and there is no

Guarantee that they can Tesla announced a 4680 batteries for their semis and the Cyber truck and their model wise many years ago they make their own and they have been struggling to get this into mass production they’re producing them but they think there’s only enough for

About 25 30,000 Vehicles a week I mean it’s a good good Target to get but they they are capable of producing far more if only they can get the technology to work see silly little things you find that if you turn up the speed of the production line uh the components get

Hotter as they have to travel faster and that heat then starts breaking down some of the chemicals they’re fitting it’s it’s just something that will be overcome in time but the future is better batteries and it’s not exclusive to Tesla in fact Tesla just placed an order with catl China’s largest battery

Manufacturer in fact the world’s largest and they have a new battery which they believe is equal to or maybe slightly better than Tesla 4680 it’s all changing so what we need to see is just wait until they come out they’re available at mass production levels then I’ll start getting excited about

Them now Tesla have confirmed that the Mexico Factory gigafactory will not this year be producing small the small car this is to sub $25,000 or $25,000 pound uh small car that is going to be their Mass Market Tesla hope that by agreeing to build a factory in Mexico it would proceed really quickly

Create thousands of jobs but unfortunately the administration side of it is just taking too long they’ve had the factory now for something like six months and they still haven’t got the full planning they’ve got certain planning permissions but they need production uh approvals as well it’s

Taking too long so what does Tesla do they don’t give up they just switch so all that’s happened now is one of the production lines in Berlin has just been switched to making the small car and Texas has also been switched one of the production lines to making the small

Cars and the reason for that is Tesla already has a factory they already have the space they already have the planning permission and building permits all they have to do is equip a new production line there is now a would say it’s a rumor there’s a possibility

That the first of the sub $25,000 or £25,000 Tesla 2 model 2 is now going to be coming out later in 2024 from Berlin is likely to be the first one followed closely by Texas now obviously in time Mexico will come online and that one apparently is

Dedicated only to the sub $25,000 small car so when that one gets going they have a massive massive factory there that will be producing cars at a tremendous Pace now at the moment the model 3 and the model y are the world’s bestselling cars which should come as an absolute

Total shock to everyone you see these are what Tesla what Elon Musk calls their premium cars these are not massm Market cars and yet the model y this year has become the bestselling car in the world this is a 50,000 car and it’s the best selling car in the world can

You imagine what will happen when Tesla get the model 2 priced at £25,000 in the UK or less a lot of people are predicting that’s going to be 20,000 but knowing Elon by the time it comes out it’ll be 25 but that’s a cheap car

That’s a cheap car for a Tesla can you imagine when these half pric Cars these new EVS are going to be be coming out in the UK can you imagine what that does to the market I believe that that that will truly dominate the entire Auto

Industry now in answer to a number of EV critics or deniers oh the grid is going to collapse if everyone plugs in their EV all at the same time it can’t possibly cope well they also argue that there aren’t enough charges out there for everyone to be able to plug in all

At the same time so you can’t have it both ways but uh the grid has just announced it is expanding to meet demand this year the grid has added three GW of clean green power just this year this is a fantastic achievement and anyone who doubts that the grid will not

Be able to cope in the future needs to look at two things the first of those is we’ve never had major blackout outs due to electricity shortage ever we’ve had them during strikes the cold strike for example we’ve had them during the three-day week and we get close to it in

The depths of a really serious winter when the demand just goes through the roof but luckily in the UK we just don’t get blackouts there is no reason to suspect that we will get black blackouts in the future particularly not while there’s a huge expansion in battery

Storage the second thing to bear in mind is that the fossil fuel industry is in Decline the amount of electricity that the fossil fuel industry uses in their refineries is staggering and I really hope that if that drops off to zero then all that electricity will come flooding back onto

The grid available for charging EVS that will be a real turnup for the book bitter irony for the fossil fuel industry but the electricity they used to use is now funding the industry that’s going to put them out of business I like that one there’s a load of new cars coming

Onto the market but one I will single out is the zoi zoi uh it’s a new entrance it’s at the luxury end of the market it’s a Chinese car it is absolutely stunning it’s announced as a Tesla killer and it possibly could be but they’re all anticipating that

There’s only room for one luxury end EV manufacturer how crazy is that don’t we have more than one at the moment do we not have Mercedes Audi rollsroyce Porsche Lamborghini the market is absolutely big enough for many many EV manufacturers to produce luxury end family cars or Budget cars it’s huge my

Own prediction when I look at all the figures I believe that by 2025 the end of 2025 the Tesla will have about a 20% share of the World Market that’s 80% is non Tesla there’s huge room out there for everyone who wants to join in and the more the merrier because the more

Cars the come on the market the more competition there is and the lower the prices it helps us buyers so I don’t see this new entrance as a threat to Tesla I see it is absolutely brilliant for the industry now we don’t get it in the UK

But over in America all Teslas now who have purchased the full self-driving option when they bought their cars are able to use it they’ve all got it and they are now reporting that many of their Journeys are now with zero disengagements now what this means is

That at the moment it’s not defined as full self-drive it never has been it’s always had Drive resistance it’s always made very clear for example you have to touch the wheel every so often or if you’ve got a a c Face camera uh you have to have your eyes on the road otherwise

It disengages and all cars are the same but what they’re finding is that they are now not interfering with most of the journeys that they’re making and some of these are four five or six hours Journeys some of that through Rush our traffic EVS in the UK people say they’re falling no

262,525 new EVS have been registered in the UK between January and November this year total new car sales are up 9% and The Fleets are snapping up EVs and EVS now are taking 177% of total new sales in the UK this is a fabulous Market if

We had more cheap EVS this would be up in the 2530 or 35% range easily people can’t afford 40 or 50,000 for your BMWs you Mercedes your Audi’s even your mg4 25 26,000 it’s still a stretch we need cars underneath the 20,000 price and at that point if they

Can produce them fast enough this will take off now looking into the funding of EVs and particularly EV charges uh there’s a growing list of funds that are beginning to exclude oil in some cases ending of funding oil I mention uh companies like the Wilshire pension fund

They they invest three billion a year they have just announced that they are pulling out totally of any Investments they have in oil Church of England recently they’ve been on a program of diversifying from oil into Renewables not just EV charging but renewable energy that’s wind farms

And solar farms and by the end of 2023 the Church of England have announced they will no longer have any investments in oil whatsoever and this is going on all around the world people are pulling out of uh investing in fossil fuels and they’re putting the money into renewable

Energy in all of its forms the results of this are already plain to see there’s a record number of oil refineries in America going bust they are running out of money and investment funds and banks are very very reluctant to putting any money into to an industry that they see as on its

Death throws well we’re back in the Valley of Death people are stopping buying ice cars and they can’t yet afford the EVS so we’re going to see a rapid drop in sales along with a massive discounting of the old ice cars as the ice car manufacturers the Legacy auto realize

That they’re going to be stuck with them unless they can get rid of them quickly so poor Jim Farley’s policy of uh investing at the uh the more expensive end of the market is going to come to tatters when they have to start slashing the prices in in order to sell anything at

All uh in other news Tesla Model y has just been announced it’s going to lose the inflation reduction act $ 75,000 um tax break in America that’s going to put pressure on Tesla to reduce prices and they are reacting already there’s an advert out on Twitter I’m sorry on X that Germany

Now they can buy Teslas at 99% less than 1% interest rate Tesla will soon be dropping prices again and I know it’s bad news for people who’ve already got Teslas I’m one of them I bought mine four years ago 1 point I could have sold it for more than I paid

For it now it’s worth a lot less but the only good thing is if and when I decide to replace it and buy a new car whether it’s a Tesla or anything else then I’m going to be be getting a much better car much better technology at a much reduced

Price so if we look at it a bit like houses people celebrate when the price of the house goes up but if you have to move move you find the one you’re moving to has gone up even more so it’s a no win for that what we’re seeing though is

The cost of changing from one car to another from a used one to a new one is probably closing slightly at the moment rather than expanding which it what it which is what it was a few years ago right we’re going to be finishing

Now with a list of some of the cars that are coming on the market within the next 12 months and there’s some really interesting ones coming up so thank you very much for watching there’ll be a slideshow right through to the end of this video if you have enjoyed it please
